More than 20 years later, Confeitaria da Guia has a new look, new dishes and artisanal ice cream
For 23 years, Confeitaria da Guia has been serving snacks and meals at Casa da Guia, nestled between the old manor house and the stunning Atlantic Ocean, which can be admired from its generous terrace. In April, the space reopened with a refreshed look and a new menu - though no major changes were made. After all, long-time regulars, who are part of the café's story, weren't about to give up their usual favourites.
Until now, the only renovations Magda Monteiro and her team - also behind neighbouring spots Paladar da Guia and Gusto - had made were in the kitchen. This time, they completely refurbished the indoor dining area, closing for around two months. But just as they reopened, Storm Martinho hit - a tragic moment for Casa da Guia, with strong winds uprooting trees and causing damage. After a full clean-up, Confeitaria da Guia finally reopened in April.
'Our chefs from Gusto helped us tweak the menu a little,' Magda Monteiro tells Time Out Cascais. 'We can't change it too much, because our customers won't allow it. They've been coming here as long as the café's been open - some of them walk in and don't even have to order, we already know what they'll want.'
Among the new dishes that these (and other) customers can try are toasties with roasted tomato, avocado and egg (€10); ricotta, honey, walnuts and lemon zest (€9); or smoked salmon with crème fraîche, dill and pickled radish (€12).
For a heartier meal, try the new meatball sandwich with provolone (€12); the breaded shrimp burger in a garlic sauce (€16); or the grilled salmon with black rice, served medium-rare and topped with green sauce (€22).
'Confeitaria is like a pharmacy - you don't need to change much, it sells a bit of everything,' explains Magda Monteiro. 'But our chef Fabrício, who works at Paladar, brought a more refined touch and introduced some of these more elaborate dishes. We only removed a few more common items, like the bitoques. As for the space, it was quite dark before and now feels fresher, more Mediterranean. We renovated the entire dining room.'
Another new addition at Confeitaria da Guia is their homemade, artisanal ice cream. Whether in a cup or cone, you'll find flavours on display like stracciatella, Madagascan vanilla, pistachio, Italian coffee, salted caramel, rice pudding, chocolate fondant, candy floss, forest fruits, prickly pear, and lemon sorbet, among others.
With a fresh new look and vibe, yet keeping its signature identity and versatility, Confeitaria da Guia remains one of the venues preserving the essence of Casa da Guia for over two decades.

Ghost hunt event to take place at Llanyrafon Manor Farm
Llanyrafon Manor Farm, in Cwmbran, is hosting a 12-hour lockdown and fear ball ghost hunt. Those brave enough are invited to bring their own bedding and spend the night inside the reportedly haunted building. (Image: Supplied) The event will include a paranormal investigation with Tracey and Nigel Turner, séance technique experiments, and a free exploration of the site's three acres of grounds. Visitors will have access to most areas, including the Tudor kitchen, Great Chamber, and attic bedrooms. The history of Llanyrafon Manor Farm dates back to the mid-1500s, and it's thought that a timber-framed medieval building stood on the site as far back as the 13th century. The site was possibly a farm for the monks of Llantarnam Abbey, and some of its remains can still be seen today. The Griffiths family owned the manor for centuries, with the earliest member of the family appearing to be Walter Griffith of Llanyrafon, who practised as an attorney and left a will dated November 20, 1629. The manor once stood in a thousand acres of ground, and during the First World War, three Italian prisoners of war worked on the farm. In the Second World War, members of the Women's Land Army worked the farm, learning how to perform tasks including ploughing, milking, harvesting, and digging. Today, Llanyrafon Manor Farm stands as grand as ever, its history once again showcased for all to enjoy. A free breakfast and unlimited teas, coffees, hot chocolate, bottled waters, juice, and biscuits will be available. The event is not open to pregnant ladies or anyone intending to consume drugs or alcohol. Over in Abersychan, Garndiffaith Millennium Hall will host a murder mystery evening. (Image: Supplied) The event, which will run from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday, June 7, invites attendees to come along and solve the mystery. A ploughman's supper is included in the ticket price of £6.50. For those interested in the murder mystery evening, tickets will be available from the hall or via Eventbrite. Flash Back will travel across the border to the Olway Inn, Usk, on Saturday, June 7. (Image: Supplied) The band will perform rock and pop hits from the 60s to the 00s, promising an evening of dance and sing-along for all. Tintern Abbey will also be hosting a historical event over both days of the weekend. (Image: Supplied) Visitors will be able to discover all about monastic life in the high medieval period at one of the nation's largest monasteries of the time. The Chapter of Stronghold re-enactment group will portray the lives of monastic people, including monks, nuns, and laypeople as they write, pray, live, and eat at Tintern Abbey. There will be authentic cooking, manuscript writing, a holy reliquary, and more. Normal admission prices apply for this event.

Inside Michelle Keegan and Mark Wright's £1,300 a night luxurious Spanish holiday resort hidden away in the countryside with baby daughter Palma
With suites costing £1,350 a night and everything you could need within its grounds, it's no wonder Michelle Keegan and Mark Wright chose a reclusive hotel hidden away in the Spanish countryside for their first holiday with baby daughter Palma. The new parents, who welcomed baby Palma in March, are staying at the five-star Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort Hotel in Andalusia. First opened in 1962, today Sotogrande is considered to be one of the most luxurious hotels in Europe. Each room at the resort has a modern, contemporary design featuring art by local artists and boasts its own private balcony or terrace. Michelle and Mark are likely to be enjoying the SO/Suite, which is an impressive 1,001 sqft room, with separate living and sleeping areas. With its king size bed and a sofa bed, a ultra-relaxing rain shower, the room looks out at the stunning Resort Gardens while daylight also floods the room with floor-to-ceiling windows. A stay in the suite will cost approximately £1,350 a night, while twin rooms at the resort are £300. Sotogrande's spa hosts an addictive view of the Mediterranean Sea and features a Hammam, sauna and indoor pool. Its wellness centre offers a state-of-the-art gym, a 'Beauty Grooming Boutique' and treatment cabins. With three restaurants and multiple bars on-site, the resort also offers numerous activities within its grounds, such as their Beach Club that offers a coastal experience, an infinity bar, shopping boutiques, horse riding and polo, racquet and cycling. In a message to guests on their website, the hotel says: 'We're bringing it back with local craftsmanship, contemporary art, and handpicked décor. 'This is a modern luxury retreat with a very special local energy.' Sotogrande is also home to two nine-hole courses, with its third currently being transformed into a state-of-the-art golfing academy, as well as an infinity pool, numerous drinking and eating establishments and a spa with everything you could want. MailOnline's Sam Lawley previously visited the Spanish resort for a game of golf on its impressive course. He said: 'Despite the lofty expectations, Sotogrande provided surprises around every corner and the blending of gentle tree-lined undulations with towering, intimidating mountains meant that the view from every tee was unique. 'The water is fun, the fairways are like carpets and the greens are a rollercoaster ride. It is everything you could ask for in a course. 'At €400 a round, it is not somewhere you can go every summer, but even if you play it just once, the picture postcard images will stay in your head for a long time.' Michelle Keegan looked sensational as she shared snaps from the retreat to Instagram on Thursday. Michelle also took the opportunity to share Palma's sweet nickname with followers as she captioned the post: 'Princess P's first family holiday'. Netflix fans left ‘on the edge of their seats' by new crime thriller - raving over ‘shocking and brilliantly executed twist' that no-one saw coming
Netflix fans have been left 'on the edge of their seats' by a new crime thriller - raving over a 'shocking and brilliantly executed twist' that no one saw coming. Sara: Woman In The Shadows follows former secret agent Sara (Teresa Saponangelo) who leaps back into action after her son's tragic death in suspicious circumstances. The Italian-language six-part series, added to the streamer on Tuesday, is based on a series of crime novels by prolific Italian thriller writer Maurizio de Giovanni. It also stars Claudia Gerini - who played crime boss Gianna D'Antonio in John Wick: Chapter 2 - as Sara's old colleague Teresa, who agrees to help her investigate. With the programme climbing to number seven on Netflix's TV chart, just a day after its release, fans took to X to say how gripping they found the thriller series. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. One user said: 'The ending of Sara: Woman In The Shadows leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. 'The twist is both shocking and brilliantly executed, tying up loose ends while leaving room for reflection on Sara's journey. 'A must-watch for crime drama enthusiasts!' Another added: 'Sara: Woman In The Shadows, what a beautiful series.' Sara's flawless intelligence work, including being able to lip-read, sees her dubbed 'the invisible woman' in the series - which critics also found thrilling to see in action. Time Magazine said: 'Sara: Woman In The Shadows ends with the promise that as long as injustice exists, there will be those who fight - and that true justice is born in the hands of those who refuse to give up.' Similarly, review site Ready Steady Cut added: 'This is six dense episodes of grounded and compelling procedural spycraft enhanced by an unconventional lead and a willingness to meet its underlying themes and ideas halfway.' Meanwhile, pop culture title Midgard Times said: 'Sara: Woman in the Shadows emerges as an intelligent thriller that gives us emotional theatrics along with psychological complexity.' With the programme climbing to number seven on Netflix's TV chart, just a day after its release, fans took to X to say how gripping they found the thriller series The character of Sara Morozzi was first introduced by prolific Italian crime writer Maurizio in 2018, with his novel Sara Al Tramonto (Sara At Sunset). She soon proved a standout among his protagonists, as an older, more withdrawn and highly intelligent character. The set of novels about Sara marks the third of his book series to have been adapted into Italian TV shows, with this show filmed across Rome and Naples. The TV programme draws some several books in the series about her, rather than following one individual text. Speaking to Italian publication Il Recensore, Maurizio said: 'Sara is back, and it has always been my favourite series... 'Writing about her is always an intense experience, because Sara has a rare superpower: to listen.' And actress Teresa, who plays Sara, has spoken about taking on the role to Italian title Il Mattino: 'She worked for years in the secret services and has the gift of being able to read lips, so the less she stands out, the better she conducts her investigations. 'She is an observer, who remains in the shadows, investigates laterally, in silence. She is shy, does not expose herself, tends to subtract rather than add, always working by subtraction both in her private and working life.' The success of the Italian crime drama now on Netflix follows the popularity of another on the platform from closer to home - hailed as 'pure greatness' by fans. Scottish drama Dept Q sees cranky detective Carl Morck, played by Matthew Goode, attempt to solve Edinburgh's cold cases from a shabby office. The nine-part series also features The Queen's Gambit's Chloe Pirrie and Guilt star Jamie Sives. It has proved a hit with fans, climbing the charts and racking up an impressive 81 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have taken to social media with praise as one posted to X: 'Dept Q on Netflix is such a good crime thriller. 'Matthew Goode's acting was next level! I hope they make season two of this series.'
