🎥 Inter Miami duo display Barça DNA in first-half strike vs the Galaxy

Yahoo2 days ago
Inter Miami go into the half-time interval with a justified one-nil advantage, and they have some veteran stars to thank for the opener.Despite Javier Mascherano excluding both Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul from the matchday XI against the visiting LA Galaxy, the Herons have still been the better side on the night, with former Barça stars Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets rising to the top before the break.
Not long after the Herons were denied a first goal after a sensational back-heel pass from Luis Suárez found Telasco Segovia in the box, Busquets and Alba tapped into their telepathic understanding to pounce in the 43rd minute.
Busquets, long viewed as one of the top midfielders Spain has ever produced, dispatched an inch-perfect ball into space to find the marauding Alba down the right flank, with the diminutive full-back having only Novak Mićović to beat, which he did with a composed finish from inside the box.
It was vintage Barça from the former La Roja stars, and a sign that they're still capable of producing moments of unquestionable quality.

Matthew Stafford returns to Rams practice Monday after weeks of uncertain injury updates

The Los Angeles Rams got some excellent news Monday. After weeks of uncertain injury updates, quarterback Matthew Stafford finally returned to practice. The Rams got out in front of the news, immediately tweeting out a picture of Stafford taking the field in a red practice jersey. The news should come as a welcome surprise for Rams fans, who have been given murky updates about the quarterback's injury status throughout training camp. Head coach Sean McVay teased Stafford's return a few times during camp, inviting plenty of questions when the quarterback failed to take the field after McVay indicated Stafford would be back. Stafford is dealing with a back injury. While his absence from training camp caused some to wonder whether Stafford's Week 1 status was in jeopardy, his return suggests he'll be fine for the start of the regular season. Panthers great Cam Newton to have jersey number retired by Auburn

Before he was a Carolina Panthers legend, Cam Newton was a University of Auburn legend. So before there was a No. 1, there was a No. 2. But that won't be the case, at least for the Tigers' football program, any longer—as the school announced on Monday that they will retire Newton's No. 2 jersey this upcoming season. Newton's lone year at Auburn is regarded as one of, if the not greatest season in college football history. That storybook 2010 campaign saw the Atlanta, Ga. native pass for 2,908 yards and 30 touchdowns and run for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores en route to a landslide victory of the Heisman Trophy and the second-ever national championship in Auburn's history. His efforts helped him become the first overall selection of the 2011 NFL draft—a pick made, of course, by the Panthers. Auburn is set to officially retire Newton's number on Oct. 11, before the Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Newton will be the fourth Tiger to have his number retired—joining Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan and Terry article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers great Cam Newton to have jersey number retired by Auburn

Jose Manuel Lopez earns first Argentina callup for World Cup qualifiers

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Palmeiras striker Jose Manuel Lopez received his first Argentina callup on Monday for World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Ecuador. Led by 38-year-old captain Lionel Messi, the team also includes young talents like Real Madrid's recent signing Franco Mastantuono and Manchester City's Claudio Echeverri. 'Flaco' Lopez caught the eye of coach Lionel Scaloni for his goal-scoring output at Palmeiras, where he joined in 2022 from Lanús. Tall at 1.9 meters, the center forward has 15 goals in 42 matches this year. World champion Argentina has already secured a spot for the 2026 World Cup and leads South American qualifying. Argentina will host Venezuela on Sept. 4 at Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires and visit Ecuador on Sept. 9 in Guayaquil for the final doubleheader of the competition. The Argentines will be without Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, who received a two-match suspension for his sending off against Colombia in June. Instead, Alan Varela, a star of Porto in Portugal, was chosen. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press
