Basketball with a message: Anti-racism tournament hits the courts in Halifax

Hundreds of young basketball players in Halifax hit the hardwood Sunday to play the game they love and to learn an important message. (Jonathan MacInnis/ CTV News) Hundreds of young basketball players in grades 5 to 12 hit the hardwood in Halifax Sunday to play the game they love and to learn an important message. 'We use basketball as a tool to translate a deeper message and that message is anti-racism,' says tournament founder, Chris Johnson. 'So we use the tournament to bring everyone together from different ethnicities and everyone fights together towards an active cause.' The tournament is a three-on-three format and includes conversations around anti-racism, diversity and equity. There are also guest speakers and interactive anti-racism activities. The key for Johnson is the age group that is the target of the messaging. 'At a young age, I think it's easier to get a message across and it turns into habit. So we teach them now how to be kind to others, how to not look at people differently because of their skin colour and as they grow up, they'll share those same values and move on in life,' he said. (Jonathan MacInnis/ CTV News) 'We're playing basketball and having fun, but there's another message to it, there's more behind it,' says 14-year-old Mason MacRae who is enjoying the competition on the court and the comradery of it. 'I think it's important for youth to know this because it's a good message. It's something that people need to know and for someone like Chris to spread this message, I think people will listen to him more than some random person.' Jenaya Downey has played in the event before and says she'll be back next year. 'I think it's a great idea to bring a lot of people together to have fun and also play the sport they love and to be with their community and their friends.'
