Artists celebrate one-year anniversary of Halifax airport gallery's reopening
The ArtPort Gallery, located between the airport's security and arrivals sections, measures just 14-by-20 feet, but every inch of wall space is covered in colour, texture and storytelling. It features original pieces from 12 local artists.
'We're serving not only Canadian customers but also international,' said artist Ilze Lucis. 'So we're sharing our local art with the world.'
From bold portraits to abstract landscapes and coastal wildlife, the artwork is as varied as the passengers who pass by it. Artists take turns curating and selling their work in-person, something Jennifer Dingle says has brought her back to her roots.
'I trained originally as a biologist, and so I love animals and painting the local flora and fauna,' she said. 'It's given me a chance to learn about them again.'

The group behind the gallery operated in the terminal for more than a decade before COVID-19 shut it down. When it reopened last year, it marked a hopeful return for a community of creatives familiar with the space.
'It's good to be back here,' said artist Marshal Burgess. 'We were shut down for three years with COVID. We're very glad to be here — it's always busy, and you meet more people.'
Some, like Annabelle Caissie, have been involved for more than 20 years — from the days when the gallery was a small kiosk near the food court.
The artists are hoping the lease, currently set to expire in December, will be renewed so they can continue building on the gallery's momentum.
'We just love to share our art with the world,' said Lucis.

KV Go transit pilot project to launch in Quispamsis, Rothesay, N.B.
Two municipalities in New Brunswick, Quispamsis and Rothesay, are launching KV Go transit demonstration projects starting Monday. The demonstration project will test a new 'transit solution' for the Kennebecasis Valley. KV Go will provide free, accessible, daytime bus transportation to certain locations throughout the communities this summer and fall as part of the pilot project. The buses will function as a stop-to-stop transit service for two fixed routes during the week and one route on the weekends. 'The goal is to provide the framework for a long-term transit option for the Kennebecasis Valley, which would improve access for individuals and families in Quispamsis and Rothesay to run errands to grocery stores, banks, medical appointments, visit municipal parks and facilities, and other important services,' a release from the Town of Quispamsis said. Information on schedules, stops, timing and maps is available on the KV Go website. The municipalities will be collecting rider feedback during the project through an online survey and through paper copies available at both municipal town halls. Theatre company gets permit to perform in Halifax park despite woods ban
For one Halifax-based theatre company, the show will go on despite a provincewide ban on activities in wooded areas due to ongoing hot, dry conditions. Shakespeare by the Sea, which typically puts on outdoor productions in Point Pleasant Park, says it obtained a permit to continue operations this summer following the Nova Scotia government's decision to restrict entry to woods earlier this week. 'August is historically our busiest month of the year, where we make most of our revenue,' the company said in a news release. 'Without this permit, we would have been unable to continue the season. Without a way to make up ticket revenue, this would have put the company financially at risk after 32 years in the park.' Shakespeare by the Sea says patrons must follow conditions of the permit, which include: stay on the main path as marked when walking to and from performance sites not enter wooded areas in Point Pleasant Park stay at performance sites no smoking or vaping 'It's very important that we comply with all of these conditions of our permit in order to keep everyone safe,' the company said. 'By attending a performance, you are agreeing to abide by these additional measures.' As You Like It Shakespeare by the Sea presents As You Like It this summer. (Source: James Arthur MacLean) This season, Shakespeare by the Sea is presenting 'Robin Hood: The Legendary Musical Comedy' (July 5 to Aug. 30), 'As You Like It: The Walkabout Experience' (July 25 to Aug. 29) and 'Unrehearsed Romeo and Juliet' on Aug. 31.
