The most heartbreaking farewell: Moment crying nun who knew Pope Francis is allowed to break protocol and stand beside his coffin and silently pray for her old friend

Daily Mail24-04-2025

An elderly nun and close friend of Pope Francis for over four decades was allowed to break protocol while visiting his coffin at St Peter's Basilica.
French-Argentine nun, Sister Genevieve Jeanningros, was seen in footage from the first day of Francis' lying-in-state approaching a restricted area to pray before the coffin of the late Pontiff.
The area is traditionally reserved for cardinals, bishops, and priests, but the 81-year-old was permitted to grieve there due to the close friendship they had shared.
Clips of the heartfelt moment circulating on social media show Jeanningros stepping toward a red rope surrounding the coffin with the assistance of an official, who guides her forward.
Dressed in a blue headscarf navy attire, the nun, who Francis affectionately nicknamed L'enfant terrible' - translating to the terrible infant, stood quietly to one side of the open casket.
In a moment of raw emotion, she burst into tears and brings her hands to her face, as she stands just feet away from the body of the late Pope. Taking a tissue, she wipes her eyes and remains in place for a moment.
Despite breaking what is traditionally regarded as protocol, no security official intervened, allowing Francis' close friend an intimate moment of farewell.
In July, the Pope had personally visited Jeanningros in Ostia, Rome, to acknowledge her longstanding humanitarian work.
Their meeting, held at Luna Park fairground, publicly highlighted the Pope's respect and adoration for the nun who has dedicated her time to helping those facing marginalisation and social exclusion.
The nun, from the order of the Little Sisters of Jesus, has dedicated more than 56 years to serving the most disadvantaged people, especially transgender women, in the Ostia area.
She reportedly lives in a caravan with another nun, Anna Amelia Giacchetto.
The relationship between Jeanningros and Francis began when he was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
Their connection was strengthened by their shared commitment to the most vulnerable and by the wounds of the Argentine dictatorship.
Every Wednesday, the nun brought groups of fairground workers, homeless people, and transgender women to the Vatican's general audiences. Francis not only received them but also invited them to lunch and offered financial support.
The heartfelt moment from Jeanningros at Francis' lying-in-state comes after some mourners sparked fury when they were seen snapping morbid selfies with his dead body.
On Instagram, one image saw a woman smiling at the camera as she displayed the Pope clutching his rosary around 10ft behind her. His body, dressed in his white mitre and red Papal robe symbolising love and the blood of Christ, can clearly be seen in the coffin which lies on a raised platform.
Officials released photos of Francis in his velvet-lined coffin and did not ban public pictures, but guards reportedly stopped some morbid mourners using phone cameras.
Mourners who queued up eight hours to catch a final glimpse of the late Pope before he is buried on Saturday said the actions of the selfie-takers was 'a bit in poor taste'.
Janine Venables, 53, from Pontypridd, south Wales told MailOnline: 'What did surprise me is the fact that earlier we were told no photos in the Sistine Chapel and here people were getting their phone out and doing selfies with the coffin.
'I did think that was a bit in poor taste and I'm surprised no one stopped them.'
A Vatican source said: 'It would be good if people could try and remember where they are and have a little respect but there's little else that can be done.'
Some 19,430 people had been to the basilica 'to pay homage to Pope Francis' less than 12 hours after his coffin was transferred there, and where it will stay until Friday.
While it had been expected that St, Peter's would close at midnight on Wednesday and Thursday, it remained open throughout the night to allow more people to pay their respects.
By late yesterday evening, the wait appeared to be three or four hours and growing. An official doing crowd management estimated that the wait was closer to five hours.
Security measures have been heightened around the Vatican, with Italian police conducting foot and horse patrols in the area.
Police have been managing crowd control at various points on the approach to the square, with some checking bags, as mourners mingled with the usual tourist population.
Large crowds are expected for Saturday's funeral in St Peter's Square, with the Prince of Wales, a future head of the Church of England, confirmed to be attending on the King's behalf.

The women had been visiting the pools on the Watkin path on Yr Wyddfa (formerly known as Snowdon). Llanberis Mountain Rescue Teams and Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the incident which happened at Nant Gwynant on Wednesday at about 9.30pm. However the women, who have not been named, could not be saved. Jurgen Dissmann, Chair of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, posted an online message about the tragedy. (Image: Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team) North Wales Police said yesterday that they have been called out at 9.30pm on Wednesday. They were told one woman had been pulled from the pools which have become hugely popular in recent years. A second woman was reported to be still in the water. Police launched a joint operation with the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team, Air Ambulance and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. Despite desperate efforts to save them the two women were pronounced dead at the scene. A North Wales Police spokesperson said yesterday: "Police were called at 21:31hrs following a report that one female had been pulled from the water, and another was reported to be in the water at the pools on the Watkin Path. "The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to the area along with North Wales Police, the Air Ambulance and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. The second female was pulled from the water, however, despite the best efforts of all involved both were pronounced dead at the scene." Just a short hike from the A498, the Watkin Path pools have long been popular but have more recently seen an explosion of interest after featuring on tourism apps such as Instagram and TikTok. Until this week, their popularity was taken granted and their use unquestioned. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox

Orcas left to rot in algae-infested abandoned zoo 'doomed to die' in sad update

France's last remaining orcas, Wikie and Keijo, spend their endless days swimming around a cramped concrete tank after Marineland Antibes closed permanently in January. Now campaigners warn they are doomed to die without urgent action The two last remaining orcas living in captivity in France could be doomed to die because of government inaction on their abandoned marine park, campaigners have warned. Wikie and her son Keijo are the last killer whales living in France and have been forced to swim around their barren, rotting tank after Marineland Antibes closed down permanently in January this year. ‌ Since then, the tragic orcas fill their endless days without stimulation, pining for the bonds they made with their now-dead family members. They are the last two surviving members of their original pod of four. ‌ Now the park has closed to the public, their environs are crumbling, with the water in their concrete tank getting dirtier by the day and stinking green algae creeping across the site. While a skeleton staff come in to feed them and provide them with minimum human interaction, Wikie and Keijo have been all but forgotten by the people they used to entertain. READ MORE: UK's secret dolphin pool of horrors - breakdowns, blindness and force-feeding animals who longed to die In a much smaller tank nearby, 12 bottlenose dolphins are the only other inhabitants of the rotting park - and time is running out for them, too. Cetacean campaign group TideBreakers have been lobbying the French government to take urgent action and get the animals out of the park before it's too late. But a row between French officials and the marine park's management - who still bear a legal duty for the welfare of the cetaceans - could drag on until all of the animals have succombed to their tragic fate. Legislation that came in in 2021 banned entertainment shows featuring whales, dolphins and porpoises, and set a hard deadline of December 2026 for Marineland to move their animals to safety. ‌ But government ministers have since blocked two proposals to rehome the orcas: one to a marine zoo in Japan, and another to a whale sanctuary in Canada - which is not yet built. The Japanese offer was rejected on the grounds of animal welfare concerns, while the Canadian Whale Sanctuary Project's offer was binned in favour of a potential European sanctuary, because of the strenuous travel involved to get the orcas to North America. A third option, to move the dolphins and two orcas to Loro Parque in Tenerife, was dismissed by an expert panel, who said the proposed tank "would not meet the minimum requirements in terms of surface area, volume and depth necessary to house the specimens in optimal conditions". Loro Parque already boasts four captive orcas of its own, including a calf born in March 2025. ‌ The French Ministry of Ecology said the government are still hunting for alternatives - while campaigners say there is no time to be dragging their feet. Theme park left abandoned and 'frozen in time' where Orca whales still alive left to rot "To date, with the exception of orcas and dolphins, all the animals have found a new habitat suited to their needs," said a government spokesperson. ‌ "With regard to the orcas and dolphins, an assessment by the Spanish Scientific Authority led the latter to oppose the transfer of the orcas and dolphins to Loro Parque (Tenerife) and the transfer of ten dolphins to the Madrid aquarium: the Authority concluded that the facilities did not meet the requirements in terms of surface area, volume and depth to house the specimens in optimum conditions. "This unfavourable opinion means that authorisation cannot be granted to transfer these animals to Spain." They added: "Pending their transfer, the Minister for Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forestry, Sea and Fisheries is asking Parques Reunidos, Marineland's owner, to ensure that the animals continue to be cared for pending a future solution. ‌ "At the same time, discussions have been held with the Italian, Greek and Spanish ministers to find a satisfactory solution that will ensure the animals' welfare. "Although no solution has yet been found, discussions with the Italian minister have shown that the Taranto sanctuary project has the support of the authorities and could be ready within a year." But TideBreakers say Wikie and Keijo might not have a year left if they stay in their unsafe and unsanitary tanks. Wikie turned 24 on June 2, marking nearly a quarter of a century living in captivity. She has already witnessed the death of her son Moana, who died in October 2023, and her brother Inouk who died last March after ingesting a piece of metal that had fallen loose into his tank. "Wikie has spent her entire life in the concrete tanks at Marineland Antibes," said TideBreakers. "Our wish for Wikie is to see her thrive in a clean, safe environment as soon as possible, where she can live a long life alongside her son, Keijo."
