‘Offer new experiences to attract more tourists'
Tourism Malaysia says niche attractions will help cement nation's position as global travel destination
DIVERSIFYING tourism offerings is crucial in helping the country position itself as a preferred global travel destination.
Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) on the horizon, all states should aim to introduce new tourism products, especially in niche segments.
Noting that travellers are always on the hunt for new experiences, he pointed to special interest markets like ecotourism, health tourism, cultural tourism and agrotourism as areas of opportunity.
He said it would be timely since Malaysia's role as Asean chair this year enabled it to spearhead sustainable and inclusive tourism within the region.
Yeoh said this was also reflected in the VM2026 theme of 'Malaysia: A Sustainable and Culturally Rich Destination'.
'The campaign's success will depend on well-planned and effective promotional efforts.
'I urge all parties to embrace this as a national mission,' he said during an engagement session with Penang's tourism industry stakeholders in Bayan Lepas.
'We must focus on innovating new tourism products, expanding market reach and improving facilities and services to create more meaningful and quality visitor experiences.
'Another key factor is improving connectivity between Malaysia and second and third-tier cities in other countries.
'We are working closely with the Transport Ministry, Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd and airlines to increase flights and develop new routes,' he added.
Yeoh cited central Asia as a key growth region to tap into.
Currently, the main markets are Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Brunei, India, the Philippines, South Korea, Australia and Taiwan, he said.
Yeoh said travellers from these countries made up the bulk of the 38 million visitors to Malaysia in 2024.
That number represented a 31.1% increase from 2023.
'Up to February, Malaysia welcomed 6.7 million visitors, which are also 31.1% and 14.5% increases compared to the same periods in 2024 and 2019 respectively.
'Overall for 2025, Malaysia targets 45 million arrivals. This is expected to generate tourism revenue of RM270bil,' he added.
State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said Penang International Airport had averaged 320 flights weekly as of February this year.
This is a significant rise from the 284 and 208 weekly flights recorded in February 2019 and 2016 respectively – translating to a roughly 54% increase in just under a decade.
'Our air links were strengthened by the introduction of several direct routes last year from cities across China, India, South-East Asia and the Middle East.
'Penang's hotels welcomed a total of 8.24 million guests in 2024, which was a 13.3% increase from 2023.
'In terms of capacity, some 2,200 new rooms were also added in the past year.
'These figures not only reflect Penang's appeal as a prime tourism destination but also the confidence of investors in the state's tourism prospects,' said Wong.
The engagement session was attended by several hundred representatives from government agencies, airlines, hotels, tourist attractions and local operators.
There were a series of presentations interspersed by high-tea and the appearance of the VM2026 campaign mascots – Wira and Manja – that are Malayan sun bears.
Also present were Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general of planning Shahrin Mokhtar and Motac deputy secretary general of management Imran Abdullah.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) has allocated RM400mil for marketing activities pertaining to VM2026.
A further RM130mil will also be disbursed through support grants.
These are the Geran Galakan Melancong, Geran Sokongan Sektor Pelancongan and Geran Sektor Penerbangan dan Charter.

He noted that the 'Shede Spirit' resonates strongly with Malaysia's vision of integrating culture and tourism, fulfilling social responsibilities, and deepening bilateral friendship. He expressed the hope that more leading Chinese enterprises would join in advancing cooperation between the two nations. Guo Guangchang, Chairman of Fosun International, reaffirmed Fosun's commitment to propelling Shede Spirits and Chinese baijiu culture onto the world stage. He highlighted Shede's recent strides in production capacity and R&D infrastructure, which underpin the brand's long-term growth under its aged-baijiu strategy. Guided by the principle of long-termism, Fosun will continue to support Shede's sustainable development by harnessing both domestic and international platform resources—deepening its footprint in China while accelerating overseas expansion. In his keynote, Shede Spirits Chairman Pu Jizhou reflected on the enduring friendship and cultural bonds between China and Malaysia, offering an incisive interpretation of the contemporary significance of the 'Shede' philosophy. He noted that Shede hails from Shehong in Suining, Sichuan—Hometown of Baijiu. As Tang poet Du Fu once wrote, 'Shehong spring wine stays freshly green despite the chill.' Today, a pot of Shede Baijiu, just like the iconic Guanyin Lake with its vast expanse, becomes the signature of the city. With Fosun's support, Shede has rapidly expanded into 40 countries and regions worldwide, achieving both overseas profitability and sustained growth. Pu pledged to deepen Shede's commitment to the Southeast Asian market, forging partnerships with more distributors to weave premium aged baijiu into local lifestyles—transforming the wisdom of Shede into a bridge for global cultural exchange and emotional resonance, and enabling the world to savor the fragrance of Chinese baijiu and the elegance of Chinese culture. The evening reached its zenith with a charity auction, as rare bottles of Shede aged baijiu drew spirited bidding from collectors and connoisseurs, with every lot sold. All proceeds were donated to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman to support the advancement of Chinese education and academic development in Malaysia—embodying the Shede Spirit through meaningful action. With Fosun's strategic empowerment, Shede Spirits continues to accelerate its global footprint, with products now available in 40 countries and regions. Looking ahead, the brand will further leverage its 'Aged Baijiu + Culture' model, exploring new pathways for sustainable overseas growth and joining hands with partners worldwide to champion Chinese baijiu culture—crafting a better life for families across the globe.

RM456m aerotrain's multiple breakdowns – teething problems or just shoddy workmanship?
Letter to Editor PUBLIC dismay over yet another breakdown in Aerotrain services in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is apparent on social media. The grumblings about the latest breakdown on Monday (Aug 4) have been loud and clear. As reported by The Star, airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has issued a statement regarding the 15-minute incident by blaming it on a 'technical issue'. 'At 10.30am, a door malfunction resulted in a temporary pause in operations for 15 mins,' the mainstream daily pointed out in a post uploaded to its X account. 'Shuttle buses were deployed during this time to maintain connectivity. Service resumed at 11.01am and operations are back to normal.' One can understand public disgruntlement as this follows other recent incidents. The Star had also reported that the aerotrain had experienced another breakdown on July 13. The incident that evening forced stranded passengers to walk a short stretch of the guideway to reach Terminal 1's satellite building with MAHB apologising for the incident. On July 4, the aerotrain service was halted for an hour around 11am when heavy rain caused water ponding at the underpass. In a statement that day, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook attributed the cause to a pump failure which was not part of the aerotrain replacement programme but one that was supposed to drain the water. Henceforth, this painted the impression that the incident was in no way 'a breakdown' of the train. Compensation for delays The minister's excuse sounds like a lot like a 'cuci tangan' statement which alongside the other breakdowns, the end consequence is that travellers were greatly inconvenienced. The frequency of these breakdowns seems to go beyond mere teething problems. Did the relevant parties not carry out rigorous testing of the system before going 'live'? Surely, a water pump's efficiency and effectiveness would be put to the test since Malaysia is, surprise, surprise, known for its rainy seasons to avoid the July 4 incident. What other unexpected surprises will creep up to cause more delays? What if the next incident causes travellers to miss their flights? Aside from missed holidays or business trips, what if it causes them to miss an important family event such as a wedding or, worse, a funeral? Will there be suitable recompense? It is one thing to merely reimburse the cost of a missed flight but it is quite another to put a number on missing important family engagements. These breakdowns sap public confidence of the aerotrain system. There should be greater accountability aside from the grovelling apologies. With the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign kicking off next year, suffice to say, these are headlines that everyone can do without. Social media means it will go viral, painting a negative perception of Malaysia as a destination. Stop passing the buck and get your act together. In this case, it would be the Transport Minister as the buck has to stop with you. – Aug 5, 2025 Concerned Frequent Flyer Cheras The views expressed are solely of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Focus Malaysia.
