Fatal shooting of teen: Witness heard gunshot near Collier County apartment pool area

Yahoo28-05-2025

Reports of a gunshot in the pool area of a Lely apartment complex in Collier County and a confession to playing with a loaded firearm led a 13-year-old to face charges in the shooting death of a 15-year-old over Memorial Day weekend.
Irving Adrian Jimenez Lopez, 13, faces one count of manslaughter in the shooting death of 15-year-old Christian Chavez.
Just before 1:15 a.m. on May 26, Collier County sheriff's deputies responded to Whistler's Cove Apartments to reports of a shooting.
The sheriff's office said Chavez died from a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities found Chavez slumped over in a lounge chair, according to an incident report.

Next to Chavez, authorities said they found a handgun with a dark gray camouflage-style wrap.
Authorities later responded to a home on Mitchell Street, in Naples, where they detained Jimenez Lopez on a manslaughter charge. The report noted that sheriff's officials detained a second minor, whose identity remained redacted in the report.
During a pat-down search on the second minor, authorities said they found a loaded handgun with two live rounds in the magazine. The report stated Jimenez Lopez did not have a weapon on him.
According to the report, Jimenez Lopez did not want his parents present while authorities questioned him.
The sheriff's office said it believes the shooting was accidental.
During a 911 call, a witness said he was smoking a cigarette when he heard a gunshot coming from the pool area at the apartment complex.
"He was running around like crazy," the witness said when he looked toward the pool area. "He dropped some stuff, picked it up, slipped over the stairs, fell and took off running."
The witness said the teenager then ran toward a nearby playground.

Charges dropped against Harvey, Illinois, Ald. Colby Chapman after removal from City Council meeting

Cook County prosecutors on Wednesday dropped charges against Harvey Ald. Colby Chapman, who was arrested and removed from a City Council meeting in April. Chapman had been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting a police officer after she was arrested at the April 28 Harvey City Council meeting. At her first court appearance on Wednesday, prosecutors dropped the charges. Mayor Christopher Clark accused Chapman of being repeatedly disruptive at that meeting, and kept asking about an issue that had already been addressed, leading him to ask the council members to vote on censure Chapman and remove her from the meeting. Chapman said the city had sold a senior's home for $2,000, and she wanted to know why. Video shot by a frequent critic of the mayor, and shared on Chapman's aldermanic Facebook page, shows Chapman refusing to be removed. An officer then came to gather her belongings, prompting Chapman to say: "Don't touch my stuff!" Then Chapman pushed the officer, and was led out by police. She tried to stay in the meeting by holding onto the door. Harvey Chief of Police Cameron Biddings said she was later placed in handcuffs off camera. Clark has accused Chapman of repeatedly grandstanding at council meetings, and said she was censured and asked to leave council meetings twice before. Chapman's mother also was arrested at the meeting, and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Charges against her also were dropped on Wednesday. Tony Hudgell's birth mother to be freed from prison

The birth mother of Tony Hudgell, who injured him so badly as a baby his legs had to be amputated, is to be released from prison. In 2018 Tony's birth parents Anthony Smith and Jody Simpson were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Tony was adopted by Paula and Mark Hudgell, from Kent, and has since raised millions of pounds for charity through a series of challenges. A spokesperson for the parole board confirmed a panel had directed that Simpson be released following an oral hearing. Both Simpson and Smith had denied assaulting, ill treating or neglecting their child. Mrs Hudgell posted on social media criticising the release. She said: "Tony has life long injuries every day he suffers due to her hands." In 2024, Tony, from West Malling, underwent surgery to be fitted for new prosthetics to allow him to walk without crutches. He has received the British Empire Medal for services to the prevention of child abuse. The parole board spokesperson said decisions were "solely focused on what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if released and whether that risk is manageable in the community". They added: "A panel will carefully examine a huge range of evidence, including details of the original crime, and any evidence of behaviour change, as well as explore the harm done and impact the crime has had on the victims." Hundreds of pages of evidence and reports would have been read in the lead up to an oral hearing, they said. They also said evidence from witnesses such as probation officers, psychiatrists and psychologists, officials supervising the offender in prison as well as victim personal statements may be given at the hearing. "Parole reviews are undertaken thoroughly and with extreme care. Protecting the public is our number one priority," they added. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "This was a horrific crime that saw Tony Hudgell mercilessly tortured by his birth parents and our thoughts remain with him and his loved ones. "Now that the independent parole board has directed her release, Jody Simpson will be subject to strict supervision and licence conditions. She faces an immediate return to prison if she breaks the rules." Follow BBC Kent on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram. Send your story ideas to southeasttoday@ or WhatsApp us on 08081 002250. Historic New York lighthouse vandalized and set on fire

A group of four men broke into a historic New York lighthouse along the Hudson River, set a fire and vandalized the interior, destroying valuable antiques, furniture and other items. The Tarrytown Lighthouse in Sleepy Hollow, built in 1883 and now on the National Register of Historic Places, had just undergone a two-year, $3.4 million renovation and reopened to the public last fall, Westchester County officials said. A county parks worker saw smoke coming from the conical, five-story lighthouse on Saturday morning, then discovered the damage, county police said. Police and firefighters responded and put out a small fire with extinguishers. The flooring on the first level was heavily damaged. Antiques, furniture and other historically significant items were destroyed. Thirty-five books dating to the 1800s and early 1900s were strewn on the floor and damaged. Multiple windows were broken. County officials say there is at least $100,000 in damage, and they expect that number to increase when an assessment is complete. 'The Tarrytown Lighthouse is one of our County's most iconic and cherished landmarks,' County Executive Ken Jenkins said in a statement. 'This was a truly despicable act, and we will do everything we can to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.' County police have posted surveillance photos on their Facebook page showing four young men near the lighthouse and are asking for the public's help in identifying them. No arrests have been made. As part of the renovation, interior and exterior sections were restored and repainted. Windows were replaced and the structure stabilized. Repairs were made to the cast iron exterior and masonry. Wood floors were repaired and restored. The fire burned nearly all the way through the wooden first floor, said Peter Tartaglia, first deputy commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. 'It's disturbing what happened,' he said in a phone interview Wednesday. 'But we'll get it fixed. We'll get it back. It was historically reconstructed and it's a wonderful piece of history. It's iconic in Westchester County to see that on the Hudson River.' The 60-foot-tall (18-meter-tall) lighthouse, owned by the county, opened in 1883 to guide ships past dangerous shoals along that stretch of the river, according to the parks department. Its lantern could cast a beam of light visible for 10 miles (16 kilometers), and it had a bell that could warn mariners during foggy conditions, the department said. During its 74 years of operation, 14 lighthouse keepers lived in the structure, some with their families. It was rendered obsolete when the former Tappan Zee Bridge was completed in 1955 and taken out of service in 1961, officials said. It's located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Manhattan in a park in the village of Sleepy Hollow, made famous in Washington Irving's 1820 tale about the Headless Horseman. It's one of seven Hudson River lighthouses that remain. The arson and vandalism comes a little more than a month after a barge pushed by a tugboat struck the historic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) upriver from Tarrytown. The April 29 crash severely damaged the dock of the 151-year-old lighthouse, which advocates have been trying to save from crumbling into the river.
