ORA
This former pharmacy, which dates back to 1860, was turned into a restaurant and cocktail bar in 2015 and has an alluring ambience all of its own. The high-ceilinged interior still features plenty of nods to its original 19th-century incarnation, including old cabinets and extensive wood carvings, brass details and stone floors, which are tastefully balanced with contemporary touches, creating a comely and captivating melange. The kitchen prepares fresh breads and pastries and offers three-course menus (herbivore or omnivore versions) that are big on seasonal ingredients: dishes include polenta gnocchi with aubergine and canestrato, summer duck with chanterelles and shiso, and Provençal tomato and onion tart. The associated cocktail bar can get bottlenecked at weekends, but it does churn out top-notch drinks, many often infused with home-made syrups and mixers, as well as locally grown herbs and spices.

Alan Sheehan says Swansea plan to build on buzz of Snoop Dogg becoming co-owner
Alan Sheehan has described the 'buzz' since Snoop Dogg became a Swansea co-owner and explained how the Championship club plan to build on the feel-good factor. The 53-year-old American rapper joined a growing list of celebrity investors in British football last month by becoming part of a Swansea ownership group that already included Croatia midfield great Luka Modric. Multi award-winning Snoop said Swansea's 'underdog' story 'really struck a chord with me' and his vast following on social media – 89 million on Instagram and 20.5 million on X – quickly learned about the Welsh club and his love for Joe's ice cream in the city. 'To have Snoop and Luka on board is a massive benefit,' Swansea boss Sheehan said ahead of Saturday's league opener at Middlesbrough. 'There is a buzz, obviously. As a football club you have to become more appealing commercially, to be more competitive, and appeal to the wider nation. 'It's different to how it was maybe when I was a player, but I understand why, and I totally welcome it. 'Rome wasn't built in a day, but there are big plans for the football club. 'It's about building strong foundations and building that character and resilience within the football club.' Comparisons with Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are unavoidable and already being made. The two Welsh clubs are Championship rivals this season after Wrexham became the first team in the top five tiers of English football to win three successive promotions. A docu-series tracking life at Swansea, on similar lines to the award-winning FX show 'Welcome to Wrexham', is understood to be already in the pipeline. Asked if Swansea – who were relegated in 2018 after seven seasons in the Premier League – were the 'new' Wrexham, Sheehan said: 'No, we're Swansea. We're not new anything. 'Now they're in our division, I suppose, it becomes more there now (rivalry), but we don't play them until December. So I won't really be speaking about them until December.' Modric – who joined the board in April following a takeover led by American businessmen Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen six months earlier – was unveiled as an AC Milan player on Monday after his trophy-littered 13-year spell at Real Madrid ended this summer. The 39-year-old has played his part in Sheehan's summer recruitment strategy, actively persuading players to join the Welsh club. 'Obviously, his transfer situation… he was unavailable to come here,' smiled Sheehan. 'We've had a few text messages and he's involved. 'Luka has spoke to some players, passed on his knowledge, what he knows about the football club, and the plans that we have for it. 'Snoop and Luka are very invested in the club. They care, they speak through the ownership and the ownership are very good to us.' So will Grammy-nominated Snoop soon be swapping California for Swansea to watch a game? 'I believe so,' said Sheehan. 'But I'm not sure which game yet. It would be very naive and narrow-minded to think two very successful people in what they do could not help us. 'Successful people have a lot in common – a work ethic, a grit, a determination to get where they want to get to. So with Snoop, Luka and the ownership there is a lot of positivity around the football club.'

New European sleeper train planned from Belgium to Slovakia
Trains travelling through the night at 100mph could connect Ostend in Belgium with the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, by next year. Leo Express, the Czech-based subsidiary of the Spanish national operator, Renfe, has filed plans for a sleeper train that would call at Brussels, Cologne, Hanover, Dresden, Prague and many more stations along the 750-mile route. Plans for the service, proposed to begin in December 2026, have been published by the Belgian Regulatory Body for Railway Transport. Leo Express says in its application: 'The planned connection involves new traffic that does not exist today.' The whole journey between the North Sea coast and the Danube is planned to take just over 19 hours, representing an average speed of 39mph. The overnight train would leave Ostend at 7.10pm, allowing UK travellers to connect at Brussels Midi (for an 8.19pm departure) after taking Eurostar from London St Pancras International. Arrival is scheduled for 2.18pm next day in Bratislava. The timing means the train can carry day passengers through the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The rolling stock would comprise refurbished carriages offering seats, couchettes (six bunks to a compartment) and proper beds. It will initially have capacity for 450 passengers Other appealing locations served by the train include Bruges and Ghent in Belgium, plus Aachen and Dresden in Germany. A total of 50 stops are planned. Overnight rail services went into steep decline as budget airlines expanded across Europe, but have had something of a resurgence. Austrian Railways (OBB) has reintroduced a wide range of routes, and in December 2023 the Berlin-Paris sleeper was restored. But rail experts have cast doubt on whether the Ostend-Bratislava project is feasible. Leo Express will need to gain permission and train paths from rail authorities in Belgium, France, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and compete against some extremely low air fares. In September, Ryanair flights are available from Brussels (South) to Bratislava for €18 (£16). The announcement has been covered by Thomas Wintle of the Rotterdam-based publication Rail Tech. He wrote: 'Night trains are popular in theory, but often expensive to run and logistically complex in practice. They face higher staffing and maintenance costs, tighter scheduling windows, and frequent cross-border disruptions. 'Recent construction works derailing sleepers travelling through Germany and France is a case in point. Despite strong public enthusiasm and EU policy backing, occupancy rates can also remain modest compared to daytime intercity services.' Nicky Gardner, co-author of Europe by Rail, said: 'Leo Express are talking about late 2026, but I just cannot see them getting paths through Germany at times they would like. Time will tell.' The new service would offer some competition to European Sleeper, a cooperative that is running night trains from Amsterdam via Brussels and Berlin to Prague. Leo Express later told Rail Tech: 'From our perspective, they do not represent concrete plans.' The company started up in 2010 as a Czech domestic train operator in competition with the state railway. Renfe, Spain's state rail operator, took a majority stake in 2021. Ostend was once the gateway to central and eastern Europe from the UK. Frequent ferries from English ports connected with international trains deep into the Continent. But all links ended when the 'Seacat' high-speed passenger ferry from Dover ceased two decades ago.
