Camp Fire in Lincoln County now 70% contained
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Fire crews continue efforts to battle a brush fire burning near Fort Stanton in Lincoln County, New Mexico, which is now at 877 acres with 70 percent containment, the New Mexico State Forestry Division announced on Wednesday, May 28.
The Camp Fire ignited on Sunday, May 25, but the cause has not been determined.
Fort Stanton is about 30 miles northeast of Ruidoso.
The Forestry Division said containment continues to increase as crews make progress on securing the fire line.
The fire has not spread for several days. However, after more accurate GIS mapping the total burned acres is now 877, the Forestry Division said.
The Forestry Division said crews continue to identify and put out areas of the fire that are smoldering.
Fort Stanton Historical Site personnel have begun assessments of the damaged areas. Two wooden buildings in the internment camp area of the site were completely burned, the Forestry Division said.
The Forestry Division said a third building, a gymnasium built in the 1940s, was also affected. The roof of the gymnasium, which had collapsed previously in the 1990s, was consumed by the fire. However, the walls, which are made of adobe and concrete, are still standing. The fire did not affect the main grounds of the site.

Increased fire restrictions in effect for Southern Utah
ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) — The Utah Bureau of Land Management has issued Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for multiple Southern Utah counties due to rapidly increasing fire danger. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions will be in effect for portions of Washington, Kane and Garfield counties. No discharging of fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices outside of incorporated city limits or on public lands (city-specific restrictions may apply). Fireworks are always prohibited on all federal lands. No shooting of exploding targets or tracer ammunition. No cutting, grinding, or welding of metals in areas of dry vegetation. This includes acetylene torches. No use of equipment without a working a properly maintained spark arrestor (if required). No smoking near vegetation or outside of a developed recreation site, personal vehicle, or building. No open fires of any kind are allowed in Zion National Park's Watchman Campground (Stage 2 Fire Restrictions). Campfires are allowed in improved and maintained campgrounds at Lava Point in Zion National Park. Sen. Blanco secures $65M to expand cancer care center in El Paso
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A total of $65 million has been secured in the final state budget to support construction of the Steve and Nancy Fox Cancer Center and a new Clinical Sciences Building at Texas Tech Health El Paso, state Sen. César J. Blanco, D-El Paso, announced on Thursday, May 29, in a news release. According to the news release, the total state investment is now $130 million. The cancer center, whose construction is expected to begin this year, is named in honor of El Paso community leaders and philanthropists, Steve and Nancy Fox, whose family donated $25 million to help recruit top doctors, staff, and researchers, according to the news release. Blanco issued the following statement: 'El Paso is the largest city in Texas without a comprehensive cancer center. That means too many families are forced to travel hundreds of miles for care they should be able to get right here at home. 'I'm proud to have secured this critical state funding to help change that. The Fox Cancer Center will be the first of its kind in our region, delivering advanced, multidisciplinary cancer care, research, and patient support services tailored to the needs of our Borderplex.
