Increased fire restrictions in effect for Southern Utah
ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) — The Utah Bureau of Land Management has issued Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for multiple Southern Utah counties due to rapidly increasing fire danger.
Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions will be in effect for portions of Washington, Kane and Garfield counties. This includes all BLM and National Park Service-managed land, unincorporated private lands and all state-owned land.
Utah BLM says the increase in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions is due to an increase in fire activity as conditions become hotter and drier in the coming months.
The following activities will be prohibited during these restrictions:
No campfires or open fires outside of agency-improved and maintained campgrounds and homesites in southwest Utah. Running water is required on cabins or homesites on unincorporated private land. Devices fueled by liquid petroleum are allowed.
Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove fire, except within a developed recreation site or improved site.
No discharging of fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices outside of incorporated city limits or on public lands (city-specific restrictions may apply). Fireworks are always prohibited on all federal lands.
No shooting of exploding targets or tracer ammunition.
No cutting, grinding, or welding of metals in areas of dry vegetation. This includes acetylene torches.
No use of equipment without a working a properly maintained spark arrestor (if required).
No smoking near vegetation or outside of a developed recreation site, personal vehicle, or building.
No open fires of any kind are allowed in Zion National Park's Watchman Campground (Stage 2 Fire Restrictions).
Campfires are allowed in improved and maintained campgrounds at Lava Point in Zion National Park.
Campfires are allowed at Glen Canyon in established campgrounds within established rings or below the high-water mark, only in areas completely void of vegetation.

Record-challenging heat on deck before more active weather conditions
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Saturday, it's a blazing hot start to the weekend with temperatures even warmer than yesterday! That'll translate to highs in the low to mid 90s for most Utahns, 80s in higher terrain, and another day well into the triple-digits for Washington County. Both Salt Lake City and St. George will come within a degree or two of the daily heat records. St George's record of 105° was set way back in 1910 while Salt Lake's record of 95° was set in 1997. By Sunday we start to see a shift in the weather pattern down south while northern Utah stays hot. Southern Utah will drop by about 10° with highs in the 80s, 90s for hot spots. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms could start popping up in southern Utah's higher terrain and the West Desert on Sunday, and by the evening there's a decent chance southern and central Utah valleys will join in the wet weather. Northern Utah will have similar temperatures with a forecasted high of 95° in Salt Lake City, which if hit, will break the old record by a single degree set back in 2020. On Monday, moisture pushes further into the Beehive State bringing scattered thunderstorms to southern, central, and eastern Utah, but they'll be more isolated in nature towards the north. In addition to wetter weather, we'll also see cooler temperatures falling into the 70s for most, and 80s for the typical warm areas. On Tuesday, lingering moisture could spell a few more showers in northern Utah, but eastern and southern Utah keep isolated showers locked in. Things start warming back up and drying out by midweek! South Jordan man apprehended after fleeing from traffic stop, shelter in place order lifted
This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available. SOUTH JORDAN, Utah () — A shelter in place order was put into effect in South Jordan after a man fled from a traffic stop, leading to a pursuit. According to Arlan Bennett with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, an officer performed a traffic stop and the driver fled the scene. The police pursued the driver, who drove to his house and hid inside. Police were able to apprehend him. Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office said that this was a joint operation of the Salt Lake Valley with multiple agencies involved. The shelter in place order has been lifted. Illinois Gov. Little River Road, the Spur to temporarily closed in June for maintenance
GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — Two roads within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be temporarily closed in June. The National Park Service will be completing maintenance on Little River Road and the Spur. Crews will be mowing and pruning, cleaning out ditches and culverts, repairing shoulder drop-off and mitigating hazardous trees. During the closures, Elkmont, Metcalf Bottoms and Cades Cove will remain accessible, but detours may be in place. Great Smoky Mountains National Park to hold monthly ASL-Interpreted programs Little River Road closures: On June 3 and 4, Little River Road will be closed between Townsend Wye to Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area from 7 a.m. to noon. Wears Valley Road (US 321) between Townsend and Line Springs Road can be used as a detour. On June 5, Little River Road will be closed between Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont Junction from 7 a.m. to noon. Wears Valley Road between Line Springs Road and Pigeon Forge can be used as a detour. Spur single-lane closures: From June 9-12, temporary single-lane closures will be implemented along the north and southbound Spur from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Laurel Falls Trail in the Smokies closed through 2026 for 'major rehabilitation' Visitors should plan for additional time when traveling in these areas. In addition, motor homes, buses, vans longer than 25 feet and any passenger vehicles towing a trailer are prohibited on Wear Cove Gap Road from the park boundary to the Metcalf Bottoms bridge. In 2024, the park closed Little River Road for the first time to complete road maintenance. During these closures, park staff were able to mow and string trim 24 miles along roadsides, pull and clean 8.5 miles of roadside ditches, repair 27 damaged road shoulder areas and side arm 12 miles of roadside banks.
