Former Lioness whose daughters 'did not know she played football' celebrated
Growing up, Morag 'Maggie' Pearce's daughters did not even realise their mother had played football, but the trailblazing icon has plenty of stories to tell.
With women's football rapidly growing in visibility, the pioneering side Pearce was part of in 1972 received their England caps in front of a sold-out Wembley in 2022.
This summer, White Stuff are refocusing the limelight on the foremothers of women's football in their latest heartfelt campaign as they celebrate the women who paved the way.
Southampton -born Pearce is one such figure, having played right-back for Southampton Women F.C. and England, winning five FA Cups during her career, though being in the spotlight has not always come naturally.
'It's great for us to be recognised by White Stuff and having that media attention. I get quite surprised sometimes because I'm not one to go walking around [telling everyone],' she said.
'My daughters didn't even realise [I played for England] for a little while because it was one of those things I packed up in the loft.
'I played football, I did that, had the family, retired and whacked it all up in the loft. But as time has gone on, it's a great feeling to know that we were part of that and being recognised for it.'
And while it took time for her daughters to discover her pioneering ways, football has always been about family for Pearce. Her younger sister, Heather Kirkland, played alongside Pearce at Southampton and claimed four FA Cup winners medals of her own.
'She was following in my footsteps. She came into Southampton later on but the sister side of things has always been great,' reflected Pearce.
'It had been said that we couldn't have two sisters playing together. But it was quite nice because at one stage, she was on the left side and I was on the right side. It was a miracle that we did play together.
'Our family always supported us and it was always nice going home to discover we had won and our brothers hadn't. We always had that competitive edge in the family.'
Pearce's talent, and that competitive edge, carried her all the way to international level as she debuted for England at just 15 years old. She would go on to play 41 times for her country, including at the first-ever European Championships in 1984 when England reached the final, narrowly losing to Sweden on penalties after a two-legged final.
Her contribution paved the way for the conditions and support England's women now benefit from at European Championships of their own.
'I am proud to know that we were part of that journey for them, we started it and the legacy of it all. It's great to see them having all that media around them,' said Pearce.
'We didn't have anything like that and we made our own camaraderie. We didn't have that time together, we were lucky if we got a weekend together. It would just be back to family life and back to your jobs. But today it is great to see everything going on for them.'

While he is usually reliable from the spot, the Egyptian blazed the ball high over the crossbar. Salah could afford himself a wry smile after the miss but will certainly hope to re-find his aim as Liverpool return to action next weekend. The Reds take on FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley next weekend before their Premier League opener against Bournemouth in just under a fortnight's time. Gakpo in the meantime will be hoping to continue his hot form. Speaking ahead of his latest appearance, he said: "It was my best return so far [last season] but me as a player and as a person I always strive to do better and do more. 'Hopefully this year is going to be a better one. I am just trying to get more goals and more assists. "It was an ankle injury and it was difficult and I tried to come back as quickly as possible because we had some important games but unfortunately I had a setback again in training and then it took longer to get into the rhythm again and get confidence when you are in duels or shooting on target with the ankle and you are maybe not as confident at that time. "So that was not nice for the rhythm where I was before but this is also a part of football and you have to overcome it, so I think the last games of the season went better for my ankle, I didn't feel it as much before. Rio Ferdinand fires warning to Eberechi Eze over Arsenal transfer this summer
Rio Ferdinand has warned Eberechi Eze he may struggle for game time if he joins Arsenal from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. Eze has been strongly linked to Arsenal ahead of the new Premier League season and the player is thought to be keen on a switch to north London. Arsenal are reluctant to pay Eze's £68m price tag – but believe they can negotiate a lower fee before the summer window closes on September 1. Eze has established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League, helping Palace land a historic FA Cup trophy last term. The 27-year-old has played a total of 167 games for Palace to date, registering 40 goals and 28 assists for the south London club. Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi make transfer decisions amid Arsenal and Liverpool interest
FA Cup holders Crystal Palace have plenty of interests in a couple of their stars ahead of the new season but it appears that the Eagles could actually end up keeping them Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi have not ruled out staying at Crystal Palace despite interest from Arsenal and Liverpool. The Eagles pair were expected to be on the move this summer after the club lifted the FA Cup last season. Arsenal were eyeing the England winger as a potential wide recruit despite the signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Meanwhile, Liverpool put Guehi on their shortlist as a potential replacement for Jarell Quansah - who completed a £35m move to German side Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer. Despite the pair having suitors, it is not guaranteed that they depart. According to The Sun, Palace have not received any firm offers for either Eze or Guehi and they are in no rush to cash in on either. Guehi has just a year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park and it looks more likely that he could leave for free in just 12 months' time. And should he do that, it could potentially open the door to moves to Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. In the meantime, Eze could also remain in South London despite Arsenal's interest. The wide man is interested in a move to the Emirates but the Gunners are not yet prepared to activate his £68m release clause, which could see them move onto alternative targets. Fresh developments over Eze and Guehi's stances are at odds with chairman Steve Parish's approach last summer after he claimed he was shocked that Eze remained. He also underlined his willingness to do business with the Premier League 's big hitters. "I was really worried from a club point of view of losing Michael and Ebbs in the same window and we didn't have in Ebbs the interest that I thought we would have," Parish told Sky Sports News. "I was astounded. Genuinely astounded. I mean, the guy's just an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person.' He added: 'We want to be selling to the top clubs, or to clubs like Newcastle who've got great aspirations and have recently been in the Champions League. "So we have to manage all of those things. We won't get really great young talent to come to us if they think they're going to be stuck." "We want to be playing in the Champions League,' Parish said. 'The reality is we don't right now. That's what players want to achieve in their career and we respect that and we respect the fact that sometimes we're going to be a pathway to that."
