BBC News2 days ago
Javelin world champion Fatima Whitbread said it was the "highest honour" to receive a freedom of the borough award. She and her mother Margaret Whitbread, who was also her coach, have been recognised by Thurrock Council in Essex for their contributions to sport and community, and for advocating for children in care.Fatima was abandoned by her biological mother as a baby and spent much of her early life in care before being fostered by Margaret, who was then a Great Britain team javelin coach. Posting on Instagram, the world record holder and two-time Olympic medallist described the award as "one of the proudest moments" of her life.
"My incredible mum, Maggie Whitbread, and I have been awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Thurrock," she continued."She took me in at 16, changed my life and helped me reach the world stage. This honour is hers. My hero, always."
The pair were presented with their awards by the town's mayor and council leader. Mayor Sue Shinnick said: "It is a real honour to present these awards to two of the borough's sporting and Olympic heroes."It honours not only their incredible athletic achievements but also the community work they have done promoting sport and advocating for children in care."Leader Lynn Worrall added: "It is especially poignant for me because Margaret was my PE teacher at school."I might not have reached the heights of international athletic achievement that Fatima has but I have happy and exhausting memories of school sports thanks to Margaret."Freedom of the Borough is the highest award Thurrock Council can give.
The road to success for Fatima Whitbread has not been easy.Abandoned by her parents as a baby, she spent her childhood in a children's home, suffering abuse during time spent with her biological mother during school holidays.Sport was her "saviour" and it was at Blackshots Athletics Stadium in Grays, Essex where she first picked up a javelin and met her coach and later her foster mother, Margaret Whitbread. The former Great Britain thrower, who competed at the Commonwealth Games, taught the 13-year-old all she needed to know about the sport.

ATP players handed record £13.5m profit-sharing bonus

Men's tennis players will pocket a record $18.3m (£13.5m) in profit-sharing bonuses from the 2024 season as the ATP stepped up its efforts to forge a more sustainable and financially aligned future for the sport. The bonus amount, a 177 per cent increase on the previous season's payout, will be distributed to players based on performance at the nine ATP 1000 tournaments, which rank just below the four Grand Slams in prestige. "This is exactly what profit sharing was designed to do: ensure that players and tournaments share equally in the sport's financial upside," ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said on Thursday. "The $18.3m is a huge milestone. For us, it's proof that strengthening the premium product and aligning interests creates value. "We're proud to be strengthening our partnership and building a stronger, more sustainable ATP Tour." The profit-sharing plan, introduced in 2022, splits profits generated at ATP Masters 1000 events - above onsite base prize money - equally between players and tournaments and is a cornerstone of the tour's OneVision strategic plan. Profit-sharing helped push ATP player compensation to a record $261m (£192.7m) for the 2024 season for a total of $378m (£279.2m) when combined with Grand Slam prize money. The men's elite body added that it was on track to deliver more compensation records, including $28.5m (£21m) in Challenger Tour prize money and a $3m (£2.2m) ATP 500 bonus pool. The expansion of most of the Masters events to 96-player draws had increased earning opportunities for players, widening the number of those able to make a sustainable living from the sport, the ATP added. It said there was a "wave of infrastructure investment" as Madrid, Rome, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris, among other venues, had upgraded facilities to enhance the experience for players and spectators.

What are new Premier League rules for the 2025/26 season? All 13 changes including never-before-seen way to win corner

THE 2024-25 campaign seems to have only just finished - but it is already time for the new 2025-26 Premier League season to get underway. Champions Liverpool host Bournemouth in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Friday night. 8 8 8 And there are no fewer than 13 major changes - including some never-seen-before laws and rules - that fans will need to get used to. One that may take a while is not having a Nike football. That is because, after 25 years, Premier League chiefs have dumped Nike and signed a deal with Puma. And the first Puma Premier League ball from the German brand will be the Orbita Ultimate PL. But what else will look different this season? SunSport runs the rule over all the changes you need to know about... As ever, there are some tweaks to the laws of the game, all trying to eradicate loopholes or tighten up on certain behaviours. This year is no different - with a new way to win a corner... New anti-time-wasting clampdown on goalkeepers with referees signalling a five-second countdown and a corner awarded if goalies exceed eight seconds Refs have been told to punish holding in the box - so it should be the end of all-in wrestling Another crackdown on diving and simulation has been signalled to the clubs and managers Premier League has also agreed to adopt the 'captains only' rule, aimed at preventing players from mobbing referees after decisions that go against them But players will not automatically be handed a second yellow card if they commit a foul after being already booked So that's the rules taken care of. Arsenal make major change to Emirates stadium just days before new Premier League season What about the big broadcasting changes for 2025-26? Well, armchair fans will be delighted to know there is now even more live Premier League football on the telly - and new insights, too. But those buying tickets to watch their team live could be undone by late fixture changes. All games except those kicking off at 3pm on a Saturday will now be screened live, with the majority on Sky Sports, who will show at least 215 matches, while TNT have 52 games Sky will offer a 'multi-view' option with potentially four games kicking off at 2pm on Sundays 'Ref cam' set to be used from the third weekend of the season, giving TV fans a close-up look at the action New TV deal will mean dressing room access and half-time interviews with players and managers More in-stadium VAR graphics to illustrate offside decisions and referees announcing to the crowd when a 'subjective' decision has been changed. A record nine teams in Europe, including six in the Champions League, means the Premier League is unable to stick to their promise of six weeks' notice for games being switched And finally, there is a new stadium which will host Premier League football - well, any football for that matter - for the first time. Elland Road, Turf Moor and the Stadium of Light - home grounds of the three promoted sides - have all staged top-flight football within the last decade. But the Hill Dickinson Stadium has not. That is because it is the brand-spanking-new pad of Everton at Bramley-Moore Dock on the banks of the River Mersey. The 52,769-capacity arena replaces Goodison Park, the Toffees' home since 1892, and becomes the 62nd stadium used in the history of the Premier League era. 8 8 8 8

Coleen Rooney revives Wagatha Christie skills as a detective investigating Man City charges in hilarious Paddy Power ad

COLEEN ROONEY revived her epic super sleuth skills to investigate Man City's Financial Fair Play case in a hilarious new Paddy Power sketch. The 39-year-old aka 'Wagatha Christie' has teamed up with the Irish betting company to announce its record-breaking 'Justice Refund'. 2 2 In the clip, no-nonsense Coleen, who is married to Wayne Rooney, is the boss of a parody 'Investigation Department' tackling a number mock cases. In a mock office she examines joke complaints including whether "nothing beats a Jet2 holiday" and the "latest refereeing conspiracy theories" by Arsenal fans. She then uncovers a suspicious phone call from a 'Mr Howard Wobb' heaping praise on VAR and hailing referees. But the sketch reaches its crescendo when she has to crack the case of the ongoing FFP saga. City were slapped with a whopping 115 charges over alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play rules back in February which then went up to 130. She gives her verdict saying that Paddy Power will sort it out once and for all if the game's bigwigs won't. The Paddy Power 'Justice Refund' is a payback scheme giving money back to all punters who backed a team that finished second to Manchester City in the Premier League since 2011. It covers eight seasons, meaning Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool fans who placed title bets in those years will have their stakes returned. More than 100,000 punters are set to benefit - including those who backed United in 2011/12, 2017/18 and 2020/21, Liverpool in 2013/14, 2018/19 and 2021/22, and Arsenal in 2022/23 and 2023/24. Rebekah Vardy LOSES bid to have Coleen Rooney's Wagatha Christie court costs slashed & faces £1.6m bill An official verdict on City's alleged 115 financial charges are still pending after the hearing concluded last December. City have vehemently denied the charges and have been fighting their corner at London's International Dispute Resolution Centre since mid-September. City have been accused of failing to accurately report their finances over a nine-year period from 2009-10 and 2017-18. It's also alleged they failed to provide all the details about former manager Roberto Mancini 's pay packets between 2009-10 and 2012-13. The charges also relate to their alleged failure to disclose full player salaries between 2010-11 and 2015-16. In addition to their alleged financial wrongdoings, City have been accused of failing to co-operate with the Prem's investigation. If found guilty, City could be hit with huge financial penalties and a points deducation. They could also be RELEGATED if they're found to have committed the most serious charges. The club will likely appeal any verdict which doesn't go their way, meaning the final decision may not be made until the end of NEXT SEASON. The Wagatha Christie saga involved - and resulted in a High Court libel battle.
