Will the Oscars Leave ABC? Why the Hulu-Disney+ Merger Could Prevent a Split and Benefit Both Sides
Disney's planned 2026 integration of Hulu into Disney+ could represent more than streaming consolidation — it creates unprecedented opportunities for both Disney and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to reshape awards broadcasting for the streaming era. As the Academy's current ABC deal approaches its 2028 expiration, Disney's unified platform offers global reach while the Academy Awards provides Disney with a big launch platform and the prestige of hosting one of the year's biggest events in entertainment. More from Variety Rachel Bloom and Husband Dan Gregor Set Rom-Com Pilot 'Do You Want Kids?' at ABC Oscars Set Launch Date for First FYC Screeners: 'KPop Demon Hunters,' 'Becoming Led Zeppelin' and More (EXCLUSIVE) Czech Oscar Submission Controversy Heats Up as Abuse Drama 'Broken Voices' Accused of 'Fundamental Ethical Failure' and 'Misleading Claims' Disney's recent acquisition of Comcast's last remaining equity interest in Hulu paves the way for Disney and the Academy to come up with creative ways to showcase the Oscars via streaming. The last deal between the sides was set in 2016 — well before the launch of Disney+ and the rest of the streaming explosion. 'If the Oscars stay at ABC, it represents the best of both worlds,' a veteran awards strategist tells Variety. 'Disney aligns with cinema's most prestigious institution, while the Academy gains wider streaming reach.' The March 2025 dual-platform experiment — broadcast on ABC, streamed on Hulu — delivered promising results. The Oscars attracted 19.7 million viewers, a rare 1% increase that bucked years of audience decline. The experiment gave Disney valuable live-streaming data while the Academy reached expanded its reach beyond linear to streaming viewers who want more flexibility in options for watching even a live awards show event. The Academy's broader initiatives — education, philanthropy and the Academy Museum — align with Disney's content ecosystem spanning ABC Signature, 20th Television, FX and streaming services. This also opens doors to year-round Academy programming such as documentaries, behind-the-scenes features and Disney+ exclusive educational content. A long-term and wide-ranging agreement could create yield experimentation opportunities such as interactive Oscar experiences, international filmmaker showcases and member-exclusive content. However, the $100 million question remains: How are talks progressing between the two parties? Both sides have remained tight-lipped. Sources with direct knowledge tell Variety negotiations are 'going well and moving along.' Early speculation indicated that Disney chief Bob Iger wanted to wait on the deal until the Mouse House has set his successor as CEO, which is expected to come early next year. But Academy leaders don't want to wait that long. Both ABC and the Academy declined to comment. Industry insiders predict clarity on ABC and the Oscars' future by year's end. Newly appointed AMPAS President Lynette Howell Taylor, an Oscar-nominated producer for Bradley Cooper's directorial debut 'A Star is Born,' brings deep industry ties from producing the 92nd Academy Awards — the 'Parasite' year. Although she can only serve a one-year term due to board term limits, she would be allowed to return after a two-year hiatus. She would be a valuable asset to bring this over the finish line. Disney's technological infrastructure offers capabilities beyond traditional broadcasters — second-screen experiences, real-time engagement and global distribution. For the Academy, the priority remains reaching younger, more diverse audiences critical for long-term relevance. But sources caution that other media platforms have expressed strong interest to AMPAS in having discussions about Oscars. Despite its long relationship with AMPAS, Disney will have to make them a compelling offer or risk being out-bid by a rival. As negotiations advance, the potential for a continued partnership for the Oscars and Disney — or if a new player will jump into the mix — will be one of the most pressing questions for filmdom insiders in the coming months. Which partner will help define how global audiences engage with prestige movies while preserving the artistic excellence both institutions represent? Only time will tell. Denzel Washington Says ‘I'm Not Interested in Oscars' and ‘Don't Care' About Them: ‘They Won't Do Me a Bit of Good' When I Die
Denzel Washington has nine Academy Award nominations under his belt and two Oscar wins (best supporting actor for 'Glory' and best actor for 'Training Day'), but he places no value on such career milestones. Speaking to 'Jake's Takes' on his 'Highest 2 Lowest' press tour, Washington said no acting decision he makes in his career has to do with winning awards. 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' Washington said. 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.' More from Variety 'Late Shift,' Starring Leonie Benesch, Sells to Music Box for North America as Film Is Selected as Swiss Oscar Entry International Oscar Submissions: Czech Republic Selects 'I'm Not Everything I Want to Be' After Controversial Contest Will the Oscars Leave ABC? Why the Hulu-Disney+ Merger Could Prevent a Split and Benefit Both Sides Washington continued, 'I'm not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. I'm not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good.' Just earlier this year, Washington was considered a major Oscar snub after he failed to land a best supporting actor nomination for 'Gladiator II.' Not that Washington cared. As he sarcastically told The New York Times when asked about the snub: 'Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I'm so upset. I'm happy for all that did, and I'm happy with what I'm doing.' Not getting caught up in awards has long been Washington's mantra. His 'Training Day' co-star Ethan Hawke appeared on Max's 'Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?' last year and remembered how Washington leaned over to him when Hawke lost best supporting actor on Oscar night to tell him, 'It's better that you didn't win. Losing was better.' 'You don't want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award's status. That's the way he thinks,' Hawke said about Washington's advice in the moment. 'That's what I'm talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple. It didn't elevate who he was.' 'Highest 2 Lowest' opens in select theaters Aug. 15 from A24 and Apple Studios. The movie will be available to stream on Apple TV+ starting Sept. 5. 9-1-1: Nashville Cast Suits Up in First-Look Photos, Plus Everything Else We Know About ABC's 9-1-1 Spinoff
The 113 is officially ready for action. ABC has released first-look photos of the 9-1-1: Nashville cast, formally introducing eager fans to their soon-to-be-favorite first responders. And while the 9-1-1 franchise has thrown plenty of natural disasters in the paths of its dedicated men and women over the years, from an earthquake to a tsunami to an asteroid — but a flaming tornado? That's definitely a new one. More from TVLine Casting News: Will Trent Ups Kevin Daniels to Regular, Strangers With Candy Reunion and More Rena Sofer Is Leaving Los Angeles - But Is Lois Cerullo Also Leaving General Hospital? Casting News: 9-1-1: Nashville Books Kane Brown, Patrick Dempsey's Fox Drama Adds 2 and More The first official promo for 9-1-1: Nashville finds a fiery twister touching down in Music City, implying it to be the first disaster facing its firefighters this fall. Watch the promo below: 'There were a lot of possibilities that had been talked about,' 9-1-1: Nashville executive producer Tim Minear tells TVLine, explaining that the setting was ultimately chosen for two reasons. 'One, I think that it's a really interesting city with its own personality. It's very unlike Austin. We did kind of a red state 9-1-1 [with Lone Star], but Austin is a very blue town. Nashville felt even a little bit more Southern. It also has the country music industry, and it just felt like it could be a fun place to set a piece of the franchise.' The second reason is a bit more practical. 'Quite frankly, Tennessee is very production-friendly,' Minear adds. 'That also factored into our reasoning. There are some states that you think would be fantastic places to set the show, but it's just not cost effective to do it.' 9-1-1: Nashville is also being executive-produced by Ryan Murphy, former 9-1-1: Lone Star showrunner Rashad Raisani, Brad Falchuk, Chad Lowe and Angela Bassett. Read on for a breakdown of everything (and everyone) we know about 9-1-1: Nashville, then drop a comment with your own thoughts and hopes for the franchise's next chapter. Chris O'Donnell as Don Sharpe Chris O'Donnell (NCIS: Los Angeles) is set to star in the highly anticipated spinoff. He will play Captain Don Sharpe, 'a rugged fire captain and rodeo rider who runs Nashville's busiest firehouse with his beloved son,' according to the official character breakdown. 'Don's a devoted husband and family man but he has his secrets.' Jessica Capshaw as Blythe Sharpe Former Grey's Anatomy star Jessica Capshaw was the second addition to the cast, stepping into the role of Don's (O'Donnell) wife Blythe. She's in the horse racing business, which is a natural fit for Capshaw, who 'grew up riding' and is still 'around horses all the time.' 'She's everything you want to be, and you want to talk to your daughters about being,' Capshaw tells TVLine. 'She's this equal mix of strong and smart and strategic and ambitious. At the same time, she's incredibly warm and holding everyone together and making sure that everyone's feeling good. She's the empath and the conductor at the same time. It's going to be very fun to see how that plays out.' LeAnn Rimes as Dixie Bennings The country singer is making her series-regular TV debut in the role of Dixie Bennings, though we still don't have very much on-the-record information about the character. During an interview with TVLine's sister site Flow Space, Rimes revealed that Dixie is a mother, something the show's crew apparently found difficult to believe. 'They were like, 'Oh, wow, we heard you're going to be playing a mom. What? There's no way you're old enough to play a mom!'' Rimes recalled. Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Cammie Raleigh The former Nashville star is returning to Music City, this time playing a dispatcher named Cammie. Michael Provost as Ryan Provost stars plays Don and Blythe's son Ryan, a firefighter and modern-day cowboy. Hailey Kilgore as Taylor Kilgore plays Taylor, a firefighter and incredible singer. Juani Feliz as Roxie Feliz plays Roxie, a former trauma surgeon and total adrenaline junkie. Hunter McVey as Blue McVey plays Blue, a haunted bad boy-turned-firefighter. When Will 9-1-1: Nashville Premiere on ABC? The series premiere of 9-1-1: Nashville will air Thursday, Oct. 9 at 9/8c on ABC, sandwiched between the Season 9 premiere of 9-1-1 (8 pm) and the Season 22 premiere of Grey's Anatomy (10 pm). (The premiere was originally set for Oct. 16, but ABC bumped it up a week.) Will 9-1-1: Nashville Have Crossovers With 9-1-1? 9-1-1: Lone Star only staged one full crossover with 9-1-1 during its five-season run, along with a FaceTime cameo from Angela Bassett's Athena. Logistics were blamed for the lack of interaction between the two shows, and it doesn't sound like we can hope for much better with 9-1-1: Nashville. 'It's just not something we're thinking about right now,' Minear says. That said, Oliver Stark got the fandom speculating in early August 2025 when he posted an Instagram story from — you guessed it — Nashville. Perhaps the plans have changed. Will Any 9-1-1: Lone Star Characters Join 9-1-1: Nashville? With 9-1-1: Lone Star having reached what many fans consider to be an early conclusion, it could be fun for a few characters to continue their stories on the spinoff. Fun… but not likely. 'I have no current plans for that,' Minear tells TVLine. 'But it's not impossible!' For what it's worth, Rob Lowe recently expressed his desire to make an appearance as Owen Strand, his character from Lone Star. 'I'll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother,' Lowe said. 'Chad Lowe is the executive producer, director of 9-1-1 Nashville. So I'm just waiting for my phone to ring. I mean, you know, I hired him on Lone Star. I think turnabout is fair play.' What Role Will Music Play on 9-1-1: Nashville? Though he can't say how quite yet, Minear confirms that music will 'absolutely' factor into 9-1-1: Nashville. What, you thought they'd set a show in literal 'Music City' and not let anyone pick up a guitar? LeAnn Rimes will obviously take center stage, but we wouldn't be surprised to also see Hailey Kilgore's character Taylor (an 'incredible singer') find her way into the spotlight at some point.
