Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock continue to impress astute trainer Matt Laurie, as spring campaigns sharpen into focus.
The Mornington trainer has a traditional spring path being considered for triple Group 1-winner Treasurethe Moment, with Yulong boss and owner Yuesheng Zhang to decide on a Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate grand final.
'It's got to be confirmed and agreed by the boss … Memsie (Stakes), Makybe (Diva Stakes), Turnbull (Stakes) and they're deciding whether she goes to the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate,' Laurie said.
Treasurethe Moment has won nine of 11 starts in a stellar career to date, including the Group 1 VRC Oaks, Vinery Stud Stakes and Australian Oaks.
'If she doesn't win another one (Group 1) we got to be pretty happy with what she has done so far,' Laurie said.
'She has obviously got to take on the older horses now, it's a different league, so we'll see.
'Nine of 11 you'd think she's got something to offer.'
Treasurethe Moment is $8 and $11 respectively in Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup markets.
Yulong has a stranglehold on the Cox Plate with reigning champion Via Sistina ($2.50) and new acquisition Carl Spackler ($26), a multiple American Grade 1 winner being aimed at Australia's best race.
Treasurethe Moment is ready to start trot and canter work under saddle after a week on the treadmill.
'She's come back looking better than she did last time,' Laurie said.
'She's buzzing like she's ready to have a canter, so she must be feeling well.'
Group 1 Sires' Produce winner Vinrock has also returned in great shape.
'I've been doing some flat, dressage work in the arena,' Laurie said.
'He had his first trot and canter around our track at the farm (last Saturday) and he felt great.'
Laurie has the Group 1 Golden Rose (1600m) earmarked as the first spring target for Vinrock but there are many other options following the September feature at Rosehill.
'I'm not sure. I felt he should be running in a Golden Rose and you're deciding whether you're going up to eight (1600m) or coming back to the six (1200m) furlongs,' Laurie said.
Meanwhile, Laurie has Sun Setting chasing a hat-trick in a 1200m Benchmark 64 on King's Birthday Monday at Mornington.
Laurie saved Sun Setting from a tougher assignment at Flemington last Saturday, saddled Soft Love in race instead and missed by the barest margin.
Sun Setting finished second in two summer outings at Mornington before a short break.
The promising daughter of Pierata returned with a Moe maiden win and repeated the effort last start on Mornington home turf.
'She's going really well and she looks well placed,' Laurie said.
'I don't know what price she is but she'd be short enough … I thought no point running them against each other (Soft Love and Sun Setting), as they were both good chances.
'I think she would've given the Flemington race a good shake … we thought a midweek meeting at Mornington, where she has run well before, was a smart move.'
Sun Setting is a $3.40 favourite in the 1200m Benchmark 64 at Mornington.

Canterbury previews: Payne's prized pair primed to parlay his success

FRESH from his Saturday win at Royal Randwick, trainer David Payne aims to carry over his success into Monday's King's Birthday meeting at Canterbury via two of the stable's mid to long term prospects. Two-year-old duo Cosmonaut and Funky Tilda were both selected and purchased by Payne at the Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale in 2024. They were the only two lots which Payne signed off on the day. Whereas Cosmonaut was a bargain at $17,000, Funky Tilda was a much-admired filly at the sale. So much so that her $115,000 price-tag made her the third most expensive yearling of the 162 sold. 'She is quite well bred,'' Payne said. 'She's by Hellbent who is doing well out of a quite a nice damline.' Funky Tilda was the seventh foal of her Flemington-placed dam, Another Sunday, whose best performer to date is the Magic Night runner-up Blanc de Blanc who happens to be a daughter of Hellbent's famous father – I Am Invincible. Funky Tilda also boasts Flight Stakes winner Oohood as well as crack two-year-olds King's Legacy, Zizou and Not A Single Doubt as relatives. Despite the presence of so many precious horses on her family tree, Rory's Jester, Redoute's Choice, Canny Lad, Snippets and Rory's Jester among them, Payne is playing a longer-term game with his blueblood miss. Though quietly confident she will hold her own on debut in Monday's ATC Chase The Dream Maiden Plate (1250m), an awkward draw coupled with a lack of experience may hold her back for now. 'She will need a race,'' Payne said. 'She'll have that run then she'll most probably go to the paddock. 'She is still a bit of a baby but just from what she has shown me in work, she'll most probably run 1600m.' Payne is understandably more bullish on the winning prospects of Cosmonaut which lines-up in a must-see ATC Drinkwise Plate (1250m) to start the day. Payne's colt will be the only one of the eight participants with race experience having two starts on his C.V ahead of today's third. The baldy-faced bay caught the eye in more ways than one when clocking in third at his debut in the $200,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge on Scone Cup Day. He followed up with another honourable effort, this time at Kembla, when making ground late on a testing heavy (8) surface. 'Both times he found the line well which is good,'' Payne said. 'He is still learning. He did a few things wrong both times but I think he'll be better with the step-up in distance (on Monday). 'Just looking at him as a type, he looks like he would get up to a mile (but) he has drawn well on Monday and if he can maybe box-seat, that would be ideal.' Cosmonaut is a member of Cosmic Force's second crop of foals that arrived during the spring of 2022. He is the second foal of his dam, Vodianova, who won twice at Moe over 1623m. His most famous relative is Handsome Ransom who collected the Black Opal Preview and Black Opal Stakes, beating Exceed And Excel, in his first two starts. Cosmonaut is rated a $23 chance in Monday's opening race at Canterbury which is assured a widespread audience given the presence of the much touted $1.4 million yearling Central Coast. The Chris Waller-trained colt is a son of the all-conquering Wootton Bassett and the second foal of the triple Group 1 winner Sunlight. Sunlight's first foal is Dawn Service who won the Listed VRC Exford Plate (1400m) on Makybe Diva Stakes Day at Flemington on September 14. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ SHOULD Dollar Magic finish runner-up, again, at Canterbury on Monday, she will have equalled racing's perennial placegetter Tom Melbourne's extraordinary tally of 14 seconds. Scott Singleton's mare posted the 13th second of her career when beating all bar Zealously when she resumed at home on the same day as her stablemate Melody Again won the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic. Sometimes it has been a better horse that has beaten her, sometimes not. 'There have been a few of them that have been quite cruel seconds,'' Singleton says. 'Definitely when Fire Star beat her last prep was a cruel one, but she always does her best so I can't begrudge her. 'If she wins on Monday she is getting towards $600,000 and she hasn't won one fancy race. She's won it from just keeping on turning up and trying hard so she's terrific.' Dollar Magic has finished on the podium at 20 of her 25 starts. One of her four wins was at Canterbury which was also the venue for her only taste of black-type racing on New Year's Day. 'She got caught a little bit with no cover in the Canterbury Sprint and I thought she toughed it out really well,'' Singleton said. 'She's come on a little bit from that first-up run and gets there in really, really good order so I expect her to run well. 'Whether she can beat Zealously is the thing. It went terrific at Scone the other day but if the track is going to be a bit softer than maybe it was at Scone, I think it will suit her more than him.' Dollar Magic will have company in the float from Scone to Sydney from her in-form stablemate Fiorsum Fred which could and perhaps even should be on a hat-trick leading into the ATC Ranvet Handicap (1550m). 'He has been going particularly well at home and pulling up well from his runs. He's in good shape.' For all his recent heroics Fiorsum Fred was allotted 62.5kg in Monday's mission. 'I know it sounds a lot when you say it but after the 3kg comes off and when you look at what everyone else has got comparative to you, I don't think he is that badly treated to be honest,'' Singleton said. Joliestar to bypass Stradbroke Handicap and Tatt's Tiara
Chris Waller confirmed Joliestar won't race again during the Queensland Winter Carnival after the brilliant mare provided the Hall of Fame trainer with a record 19th Group 1 win for the season in the Kingsford Smith Cup at Eagle Farm last Saturday. Joliestar was among the favourites at $11 for next Saturday's Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and was at top of betting at $2.50 for the Group 1 Tatts Tiara (1400m) on June 28 but Waller said the mare has earned a spell. 'She won't have another run in Queensland, that's it, she's having a holiday and we will start planning for the spring,'' Waller told Sky Racing Radio. Although Waller hasn't locked in Joliestar's spring campaign, it will be tempting to again aim the mare at the $20 million The TAB Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on October 18. She finished an unlucky seventh behind Bella Nipotina in the world's richest turf race last year. ' James McDonald is adamant she should have gone close to winning The Everest last year,'' Waller said. 'But I think it is on the short side of her distance range, she is probably better over 1300m or 1400m. 'It is a tricky race, The Everest, it is obviously the race everyone wants to win but you sacrifice a few other Group 1 races along the way. 'We will see how she is the next few days and work out a plan towards the spring.' Joliestar is currently on the fourth line of The Everest betting at $11 behind Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising, who has firmed to $1.80 after he was selected for the slot now owned by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. With three Group 1 races remaining for the season, Waller hopes to enhance his new national record of 19 majors with the Stradbroke and $1 million JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Waller said he rates Hidden Achievement as his stable's 'top seed' for the JJ Atkins. 'Hidden Achievement was beaten last start but we saw enough merit in his run to feel he can go close to winning,'' Waller said. 'Hopefully, we have James (McDonald) aboard which makes a huge difference and is a big help to my team. 'In the Stradbroke, we are just working out if Coleman gets in and we might run Firestorm and Konasana.' At Canterbury on Monday, Waller has runners across seven races including first starter Central Coast in the Drinkwise Plate (1250m) to open the program. Central Coast, a superbly bred colt by sire sensation Wootton Bassett out of triple Group 1 winner Sunlight, was purchased for $1.4 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale last year. With his big pedigree and impressive recent barrier trial form, it is not surprising Central Coast is the $2.40 TAB Fixed Odds favourite to make a winning debut. McDonald, who rode his 15th Group 1 winner for the season on Joliestar and is closing in on 'Miracle' Mal Johnston's all-time record of 16 majors set in 1979-80, is on Central Coast and also partners Waller-trained favourites Gatekeeper ($4.60) in the TAB Handicap (1250m) and Pink Shalala ($2.50) in the closer, the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1550m). McDonald has seven rides on the eight-race Canterbury program including for the Godolphin stable on promising filly Blue Willow, the $3.50 favourite for the Ranvet Handicap (1550m). The James Cummings -trained Blue Willow is a half-sister to former Horse of the Year Anamoe, who McDonald rode in eight of the champion's nine Group 1 wins. Blue Willow makes her city debut at Canterbury after three starts at Newcastle for two minor placings before a dominant maiden win in very heavy going two weeks ago.
