BYU Football Commit Sends Strong Message While Shattering Records
BYU Football Commit Sends Strong Message While Shattering Records originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
BYU football fans already knew they were getting a rare athlete in McKay Madsen. What they didn't know? He's rewriting history before even stepping foot on campus.

This weekend, Madsen, who signed with the Cougars in January did what no California high school athlete had done in over 100 years: win back-to-back state titles in both the shot put and discus. The last time it happened? 1922. Let that sink in.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Clovis North star launched the shot put 69 feet, 11 inches, just one hair shy of 70 feet and the third-best high school mark in the nation this year. He won the event by nine full feet, a margin that underscores just how dominant he is in the ring.
In the discus, Madsen wasn't done. His throw of 210 feet, 8 inches placed him just three feet short of the all-time California record. He won the event by more than 24 feet.
'We peaked at the right time,' Madsen told ABC 30. 'Every day I thought about winning state, and it's led me to here, and we did it.'

Madsen isn't just a thrower. He's a certified two-way threat on the football field. As a senior, he racked up 1,238 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns at running back while tallying 49 tackles and four interceptions as a linebacker. His physicality and athleticism made him a top-300 national recruit, with offers from Oregon, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Washington. But it was BYU that ultimately felt like home.
'The love is always genuine and the culture is what I represent,' Madsen told 247Sports. 'It always felt like home and is the place I need to be.'
Madsen will delay his BYU debut until 2027 as he serves a two-year mission in Argentina. But Cougar Nation won't forget this name any time soon. Not after a weekend like that.
With a national pedigree in football and a high school track résumé now etched in California history, McKay Madsen isn't just a future Cougar, he's a future star.

Orioles Announce Ryan Mountcastle Injury Update
Orioles Announce Ryan Mountcastle Injury Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Orioles are preparing to be without first baseman Ryan Mountcastle for the forseeable future. Interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters Wednesday that Mountcastle, who recently underwent an MRI on his right hamstring, will be sidelined "a while," per Roch Kubatko of While the team has not provided an official timetable, the phrasing suggests Mountcastle could be out indefinitely as he recovers from the strain. Ryan O'Hearn, who has split time between the outfield and first, is also expected to handle more duties at the cold corner while Mountcastle is sidelined. The 27-year-old slugger has been a steady contributor in the heart of the Orioles lineup. Mountcastle is slashing .264/.319/.420 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs across 58 games. His absence creates a void in both offensive production and experience, as the Orioles turn to younger options. Advertisement Mountcastle is the 12th player the Orioles currently have on the IL. Will Red-Hot Orioles Consider Trading Ryan Mountcastle?
Will Red-Hot Orioles Consider Trading Ryan Mountcastle? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Maybe it's time to keep an eye on the Baltimore Orioles. After what's appeared to be a lost season, including the firing of manager Brandon Hyde, the Orioles are suddenly on fire. The O's have won six in a row and nine of 11 games to give fans a glimmer of what many thought the club could be coming into 2025. Advertisement Their latest uptick could be the reason why the Orioles alter their philosophy going into next month's MLB trade deadline. As noted by Mark Feinsand, 'Baltimore might be the most intriguing team to watch during the next eight weeks.' Say the Orioles climb closer to .500 – they went into Friday at 25-36 – and find themselves back in the Wild Card race? That could change things considerably, according to Feinsand. What will the Orioles do at the MLB trade deadline? 'If the Orioles are able to turn things around, GM Mike Elias could look to add some much-needed pitching with the hope of a second-half run, but the more likely scenario is that Baltimore opts to sell off some pieces and look to contend in 2026,' Feinsand wrote. Yes, it's a big ask for the O's to get back in contention by the July 31 deadline to make deals. As pointed out, the team has a number of pitchers such as Zach Eflin, Tomoyuki Sugano, Charlie Morton, Gregory Soto and Seranthony Dominguez headed to free agency after this season, along with outfielders Cedric Mullins, Ryan O'Hearn and Ramón Laureano. Advertisement Those are attractive expiring contracts to dangle in trades, with Feinsand adding that 'Eflin, Sugano, Mullins and O'Hearn would all help a number of contenders should they get moved.' But those aren't the only assets. First baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who has one year of team control remaining and it currently on the injured list, could be an 'intriguing trade candidate' with recently-recalled top prospect Coby Mayo 'waiting in the wings.' UConn Makes Big Paige Bueckers, Geno Auriemma Announcement on Friday
UConn Makes Big Paige Bueckers, Geno Auriemma Announcement on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After a long, grueling, and successful five-year stretch at UConn, Paige Bueckers is now in the midst of her rookie season in the WNBA, having been selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings. Advertisement She capped off her collegiate career on February 16 with a dominant 87-58 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks, securing her first national championship at the college level. This victory also marked UConn's 12th national title under head coach Geno Auriemma, making the Huskies the most successful college basketball program in history in terms of national championships. The Huskies' program has been meticulously built by Auriemma, with Bueckers playing a pivotal role in maintaining that legacy—despite the highs and lows she faced during her time in Storrs, Connecticut. Bueckers missed the entire latter half of the 2022 season and all of the 2023 season due to a major knee injury. Still, she appeared in 39 and 38 games during her final two years and managed to earn a championship ring before moving on to the WNBA. Advertisement On Friday, months after concluding her collegiate career, UConn announced exciting news: Geno Auriemma and Paige Bueckers will grace the cover of the latest UConn Magazine Summer 2025 edition. The cover photo captures the two embracing during the final moments of the Huskies' national title victory. Bueckers has been open about the love-hate nature of her relationship with Auriemma, but emphasized that it was always rooted in positivity and mutual respect. From the moment he recruited her to play in Storrs, Auriemma recognized her potential and pushed her to become a leader and strive for greatness. Together, they couldn't have ended the 2024-25 season on a better note.
