Karnataka govt. appoints concurrent MD FOR K-RIDE amid ongoing full time appointment process

The Hindu07-08-2025
Even as the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE) is in the process to appoint a full-time Managing Director (MD), the State government has placed IAS officer Govinda Reddy in concurrent charge of the post.
Mr. Reddy, a 2013-batch officer currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Infrastructure Development, Ports and Inland Water Transport Department, replaces N. Manjula, who previously held additional charge of K-RIDE.
K-RIDE is the agency implementing the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP), a joint venture between the Karnataka government and the Ministry of Railways. While the State holds a 51% stake, the Railways has often advocated for appointing a technocrat to the post, citing the engineering-heavy nature of the project.
In June, K-RIDE had issued a vacancy notice calling for applications from officers of Central Group 'A' services for a three-year deputation. According to sources familiar with the matter, the recruitment process for a full-time MD is still underway and soon the K-RIDE was about to appoint a MD.
When contacted for a response, Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development M.B. Patil was unavailable. However, a senior official in the State government clarified, 'The selection process, as per the June vacancy notification, is ongoing. The appointment of Mr. Reddy will not hamper the process of appointing a full-time MD.'

Kerala ramps up bid to be India's defence innovation powerhouse

KOCHI: Kerala's ambitious push into the country's defence innovation space is gaining traction, less than a year after the state quietly launched the Kerala Defence Innovation Zone (K-DIZ). Conceived as a single collaborative platform for startups, academia, industry, and defence stakeholders , K-DIZ is now moving into high gear — building connections, funding pipelines, and strategic partnerships aimed at making Kerala a serious player in India's Atmanirbhar Bharat drive for self-reliant defence manufacturing. Jointly driven by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and Technopark, K-DIZ operates under the planned Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Defence & Aerospace at Technopark Phase IV (Technocity), Thiruvananthapuram. Its mission is to bridge the gap between innovators and the armed forces by enabling a sharper understanding of operational needs and turning that insight into deployable solutions. 'With a strong digital infrastructure, a thriving startup ecosystem, robust R&D capabilities, institutional support, and a rich talent pool, Kerala is well-positioned to emerge as a hub for defence innovation. The Kerala Defence Innovation Zone is more than an initiative; it is a strategic movement to channel the state's technological capabilities towards national security,' said Col Sanjeev Nair (Retd), CEO of Technopark. He added that the decentralised model will allow K-DIZ to plug seamlessly into national defence innovation programmes while keeping grassroots engagement alive across Kerala's tech ecosystem. Crucially, K-DIZ provides Kerala startups direct access to national-level innovation platforms such as the Technology Development Fund (TDF) and iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), which offer funding and support for priority defence R&D. It draws on Kerala's established technology hubs — Technopark, Infopark, and Cyberpark — along with players like KELTRON, MSMEs, and defence/industrial parks, while linking them to entities such as KSPACE (Kerala Space Park) and ISRO/BATL. Early standouts include EyeRov Technologies, Silverstreak Techscape, Navalt Solar & Electric Boats, and Prophaze in fields ranging from robotics to cybersecurity. Grassroots innovation is also on the radar, with CET Thiruvananthapuram's Jayesh Natarajan securing a patent for a 'twin magazine rifle' prototype.

Fed rate cut, 401K investments: What's driving the record rally in bitcoin, Ethereum

Bitcoin prices surged to a new high on Thursday, nearing the $1,25,000 mark before moderating to $122,950.74, up 3.01 per cent from the previous close at 10:45 am, according to data from CoinMarket A confluence of factors led by expectations of a rate cut by the US Federal Reserve, America's central bank headed by Governor Jerome Powell, have driven up the price of the flagship cryptocurrency. The price of Ethereum rose 1.93 per cent from the previous day's close to $4,745.73 apiece at 10:50 am IST on Thursday, slightly down from a high of $4,7890 apiece, earlier in the day. Among stablecoins — dollar-backed cryptocurrencies — the USDT Tether was up 0.02 per cent to $1 apiece. While the rate cut expectations may be the latest trigger, broader support by the Trump administration in the form of a legislative and policy push are also driving the crypto rally, say analysts. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessemer in an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday suggested that the Fed should have cut rates by now, and he expects a 50 basis points (bps) rate cut in the September meeting. 'If you look at any (economic) model… we should probably be 150, 175 basis points lower,' he added. Bessent's call for a rate cut in September and 'suggestions that the Fed funds rate in 150-175 bp too high is fuelling expectations of looser policy,' said Tony Sycamore market analyst at financial services company IG, in a post on X. BITCOIN SMASHES RECORD $123,682, ETHEREUM NEARS ALL-TIME HIGH Bitcoin has just smashed through to a new all-time high of $123,682 (+3.71%), exceeding its previous peak of $123,236, set exactly one month ago on July 14, 2025. Meanwhile, Ethereum is closing in on its own record,… — Tony Sycamore_IG (@Tony_Sycamore) August 13, 2025 Among US indices, the S&P 500 was up 0.32 per cent while the Dow Jones surged 1.04 per cent on Wednesday. The Trump administration in an order on August 7, opened the door for 401K investment in cryptocurrencies. In the executive order titled 'Democratizing Access to Alternative Assets for 401(K) Investors', signed by US President Donald Trump, it was stated that his 'Administration will relieve the regulatory burdens and litigation risk that impede American workers' retirement accounts from achieving the competitive returns and asset diversification necessary to secure a dignified, comfortable retirement.' Under the order, alternative assets are defined as equity, debt and other financial instruments not traded on public exchanges. The order directs the US Secretary of Labor to reconsider guidance on rules regarding 401(K) investments. According to the Investment Company Institute, mutual funds currently comprise the bulk of assets under 401(K) — an investment provision that allows US citizens to deduct a part of their payout and invest them in assets allowed by the government for retirement savings. The new order has led to a surge in institutional investment with the Trump administration seen to be delivering on its promise of being crypto friendly, after passage of the GENIUS Act for stablecoin regulation as well as US markets regulator SEC's plans to ease guidelines for crypto and blockchain trading. 'Bitcoin's rally is being powered by institutional flows and macro tailwinds. Corporate treasuries like MicroStrategy and Block Inc. continue to buy Bitcoin,' said Sycamore, citing Bessent's rate cut call and Trump's 'recently signed executive order allowing alternative assets, including cryptocurrencies, to be included in 401(k) retirement funds'. According to Sycamore, Bitcoin could cross the $150,000 threshold if there's 'a sustained break above $125,000.' Ethereum, which is up 27 per cent so far in August, after rising 48 per cent in July, is also poised to 'take another led higher towards $5,500,' he added. Oanda market analyst Eliot Manier said he expects Ethereum to consolidate around $4,200 as he expects some profit taking at current levels which are close to the 2021 record of $4,800 apiece. 'Sentiment is more than euphoric, but this may keep on going for a while before it cools down,' he said.

This Stanford graduate's startup wants to change how websites are built using AI

Planning to launch a startup? Thinking of expanding your cake-baking business and reaching new consumers? You need a website. Creating a website is a prerequisite for any business — it's like your second address, a digital identity that makes you visible on the internet. However, building a website often requires graphic designers to create the layout and programmers to write the code (HTML, CSS) to add pages, sub-pages, and features. And if you are starting out, this process can be a hassle, and expensive too. A Bengaluru-based startup wants to change that with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Founder Prakash Sanker said Launch helps anyone build a website using plain English prompts, transforming them into professional-grade websites and web apps, placing AI at the forefront of the technology's potential to disrupt existing website-building tools. 'If you are a fitness instructor and you want a website, you can come to my platform. You can say, 'I am a fitness instructor, I want to create a website to manage my clients, my sessions, and my payments,' and then, in a few minutes, we basically create an application for you that works,' Sanker told in an interview earlier this week. Sanker, who studied applied mathematics at Stanford University, said the idea behind the AI-based platform is to reduce the number of steps required to build web-based applications such as websites, web apps, and progressive web apps (PWAs) and make the process accessible to anyone looking to create a website of their own. 'You don't need any coding experience. You can just come in, enter a prompt in plain English, and the platform will respond and do the work,' he said. Before working on Launch, Sanker held roles at companies like Palantir, Splunk, and Remind in Silicon Valley. In 2017, he moved to India to become the CTO of Zelp, which later went public on the NSE and BSE. He then built a mental health startup, which he eventually shut down, and explored new business ideas. Sanker recalls being interested in applying large language models (LLMs) to cybersecurity, but later realised that the market in India wasn't ready. In 2022, he shifted his focus to website and app creation after recognising the greater mass-market potential and demand in that space. As artificial intelligence becomes more widely adopted across workplaces and within companies, Sanker sees greater potential for how AI can be used to build websites without requiring any prior knowledge or coding experience. 'I don't think people are just talking about it for no reason,' he said. 'I think they are talking about it because it's pretty cool technology that's enabling a lot of new workflows and new possibilities. What we are doing now was simply not possible two years ago: the large language models weren't good enough back then.' 'You can create a website using my platform in five to six minutes, whereas working with a programmer might take a few days. You no longer need to work with a programmer to actually build a product,' he said, highlighting the primary difference between what Launch is aiming to do and how websites are traditionally built. Sanker claimed building a website on Launch is easy. All you need to do is describe your app, and the AI generates your entire stack (backend, authentication, database, and UI) all automatically. You can test and iterate, then go live by deploying your app with a single click, complete with a real domain and real users. To build a website using Launch, users pay for 'prompts' — essentially, messages they send to describe or modify their website. For example, if someone wants to create a website for selling their artwork, that counts as one message. If they then request a change, like adjusting the button colour or layout, that counts as another message. Each prompt or message is equivalent to one interaction with the AI, which uses these inputs to generate code and build the site. The full-stack AI platform was launched in beta in April and went live in June. Sanker said he is seeing demand for the product from all over the world, not just India. 'I think websites are still relevant because the biggest screen people use is their phone, and they want to see and interact with things in a manual way. While AI agents will have their place, websites will remain highly relevant in the future. I believe there will be more websites tomorrow than there are today,' Sanker replied when asked if websites are still relevant in the AI age, amid predictions by experts that AI agents might replace websites and mobile apps. Although Sanker's platform is still new, he said he is working on integrations to make it easier for users to connect with various software applications. The current focus is on improving speed, allowing websites to be generated much faster. In addition, Sanker mentioned efforts to improve the reliability of the database, which is essential for building real, production-ready applications. Looking ahead, there are also plans to introduce human support. 'If users get stuck or aren't getting the results they expect, they can pay to get help from a real person,' he said. 'We will build a lot of internal tooling to make that possible and to scale that part of the business more easily,' Sanker added. The startup is currently bootstrapped, but Sanker may raise external capital soon to support its expansion. 'Our main goal is to enable the many entrepreneurs in India to build their own businesses quickly and establish a strong software presence. That's what motivates us every day, and that's where our focus really lies,' Sanker said
