Petition calls for St Helier marine lake's restoration

BBC News02-07-2025
A petition has been launched to restore and maintain a historic marine lake which is facing an uncertain future.Nina Zaech set up the petition in support of St Helier's Victoria Marine Lake after Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan said it would be "uneconomical" to repair the 128-year-old site due to plans to improve sea defences in the area.In her petition, which had 332 signatures by 17:30 BST on Tuesday, Ms Zaech said the site on the waterfront was a "vital piece of Jersey's heritage".The Infrastructure and Environment Department has been contacted by the BBC for comment.
'Promoting health'
An inspection carried out in 2024 said the marine lake needed "comprehensive work".When asked in June about how the site would be maintained in the future, Jehan said plans under development along the waterfront and the need to improve shoreline and coastal defences meant it was a "diminishing requirement".Ms Zaech said the marine lake had received "minimal maintenance" during its history."Victoria Marine Lake predates the listed Havre des Pas pool by eight years, yet it remains unlisted and at risk," she said."Restoring the pool would preserve a vital piece of Jersey's heritage while promoting health, leisure, and tourism."

Charity chief addresses East Pentire Headland car park concerns

A Cornwall heritage charity has moved to allay concerns after it was handed East Pentire Headland by the local Council gave the county wildlife site, on the historic clifftop in Newquay, to Cornwall Heritage Trust (CHT) on councillor Joanna Kerry joined residents in questioning CHT's plans to hand the headland car park to a private parking management company, which would install automatic number plate recognition cameras, and also a decision to remove litter chief executive Cathy Woolcock said the car park prices would not change, winter parking would remain free of charge and the charity had agreed to reinstate litter bins at the end of August. Ms Woolcock told BBC Radio Cornwall that NCP, the private parking enforcement company the charity had selected, was "the best option" for the said: "I know some people would like us to have a physical presence on the site, a person in a hut, but that's not an option for us, so we have to use a parking company."She said after "a rigorous process" CHT had found "an approachable, amenable and flexible" company, the litter bins, she said like many other charities, CHT had a "no litter bins policy" on its 18 sites across the county."We understand that policy is not fit for East Pentire Headland so we have listened to what everybody has said and we will be putting the bins back in a fortnight's time," she waste from the car park would cost the charity more than £7,000 a year, she added, so she encouraged visitors to the headland to take their waste home with them. Ms Woolcock added the headland held evidence of human activity dating back more than 8,000 years and contained a number of archaeological remains, including bronze age said it was a popular spot for marine wildlife watching and designated a county wildlife site for its wide variety of mosses and bird headland was home to a large number of skylarks, a Red List species of conservation concern due to significant population decline, she added, along with kestrels, stonechat and peregrine falcons.

A Grade II listed footbridge has been damaged after being hit by an engineering train on a heritage 133-year-old Victorian lattice iron bridge at St Mary's Halt in Lydney, Gloucestershire, was restored only in 2019 – and is said to be the last surviving piece of infrastructure from the historic Severn and Wye Forest Railway, which runs steam trains and heritage diesel services on the line, said no one was harmed in the incident, which happened just before 11:00 BST on Thursday. It said its staff and volunteers were now working with the Office of Rail and Road and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch. The bridge, north of the A48 and to the west of Lydney Lake, was cordoned off to the public after being knocked and Wye Railway was originally constructed as a tramroad network in the Forest of Dean more than two centuries only remaining part of it in use, for heritage trips, spans 4.5 miles (7.2km) from Lydney Junction Station, which is near Lydney Harbour, to Forest Railway said it would be running a reduced service over the weekend.
