Fire department controls 80% of Kuala Kubu Baharu forest blaze

The Sun23-07-2025
KUALA KUBU BAHARU: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has successfully contained about 80 per cent of a fire at a secondary forest in Jalan Genting, Kuala Kubu Baharu.
The blaze, reported by the landowner at 6.26pm yesterday, involved a 60-acre area and required immediate intervention.
Selangor Zone 6 chief senior fire superintendent II Mustakim Rimon confirmed that 37 personnel from the Kuala Kubu Baharu and Rawang fire stations were deployed.
'Upon arrival, we found the fire involved a secondary forest, not a forest reserve,' he said.
Challenges included difficult terrain and limited access.
Fire engines could not reach the site directly, forcing crews to carry equipment manually for about two kilometres.
The JBPM Air Unit was activated, deploying an AW189 helicopter for aerial firefighting.
'A total of 6,000 litres of water was used to douse the flames,' Mustakim added.
Drones with heat-sensing cameras helped identify hotspots for targeted firefighting efforts.
'The hilly terrain and windy conditions accelerated the fire's spread,' he noted, urging the public to avoid open burning in high-risk areas.
Secondary forests, which regrow after disturbances like logging or fires, are more susceptible to blazes than primary forests.
The JBPM continues monitoring to prevent reignition. – Bernama

Malaysia activates 3,300 tube wells to combat dry weather challenges

SUBANG: The government has activated around 3,300 tube wells in fire-prone regions to mitigate risks from the ongoing hot and dry weather caused by the Southwest Monsoon. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is leading efforts to clean and reactivate these wells, particularly in vulnerable peatlands and forested zones. 'These tube wells were established earlier, and immediate operational measures are now in place through collaboration between JBPM and district disaster committees,' Ahmad Zahid told reporters after observing a cloud seeding operation at the Subang Air Base. He was joined by National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) director-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah and MetMalaysia deputy director-general Mohd Zunaidi Mat. The Deputy PM warned that the Southwest Monsoon, expected to persist until mid-October, demands sustained preparedness from all agencies. 'NADMA and MetMalaysia advise heightened readiness, especially in extreme heat zones,' he said. Health advisories have also been issued to reduce public exposure to soaring temperatures. The Ministry of Health (MOH) recommends rescheduling outdoor school activities to safeguard students. 'Awareness campaigns must escalate to limit outdoor engagements, particularly for schoolchildren. District Education Offices are coordinating adjustments,' Ahmad Zahid added. Earlier, he reported successful cloud seeding over Perak's Bukit Merah Dam, where water levels had plummeted to 12.21%. Heavy rainfall occurred within 45 minutes of the operation, offering relief to affected communities and farmlands. - Bernama

Gunung Semanggol bush fires extinguished after 23 hectares razed

GUNUNG SEMANGGOL: Firefighters successfully brought under control a bush fire that destroyed 23.47 hectares in Kg Tersusun Tebuk Panchor, Gunung Semanggol, Bagan Serai. The blaze, which started on Thursday, was contained after a two-day operation involving ground and aerial firefighting efforts. Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad confirmed that 22.66 hectares had been fully extinguished, while 0.8 hectares remained ablaze. Ground teams used mechanical and transport pumps with a 1,000-foot hose, sourcing water from nearby hydrants. The operation was divided into four sectors, with six to seven personnel assigned to each. The Air Unit assisted with an AW 139 aircraft, conducting 20 water bombings. Challenges included navigating high-voltage electrical lines and shallow water sources, which caused mud to enter the water bucket. Firefighting efforts paused at 7 pm today and will resume tomorrow with additional personnel and logistics. Sabarodzi stated, 'Ground attacks and water bombing will ensure remaining embers are fully extinguished.' The fire, attributed to prolonged hot weather, last occurred in the area in 2023. - Bernama
