Kerala activist held for terror charges was active on dark web: ATS Officials

India Today20-05-2025

A student activist and self-described independent journalist from Kerala arrested earlier this month under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for allegedly preparing to wage war against the country was active on the dark web, an official from the Nagpur unit of the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) said on Monday.Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek, aged 26, was arrested by Lakadganj police on May 7, from a hotel in Nagpur, Maharashtra, after his online activities were placed under surveillance. Sydeek had made social media posts on Instagram condemning Operation Sindoor, the recent strike by Indian Armed Forces on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and also criticised counterinsurgency operations against Naxals.advertisementHis house in Kerala's Ernakulam district was later raided on May 11, resulting in the seizure of incriminating documents, the official added.'A preliminary scan of the digital devices belonging to him has revealed he was active on the dark web and was making inflammatory comments and posting his ideas. The Anti Terrorism Squad will send the digital devices to the cyber-forensic laboratory for in-depth investigation,' the official said. The dark web refers to a part of the internet not indexed by standard search engines, accessible only through specific software. It offers a high degree of anonymity to users and is frequently associated with illicit activities, including drug trafficking and data breaches. The official further said that a local court extended Sydeek's police custody by two days on Sunday. His online activity reportedly included provocative posts and an image in which he was holding a firearm after visiting a rifle shop in Nagpur. He was initially booked under sections 149 (preparing to wage war against the Government of India), 192 (provocation with intent to cause riots), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 353 (statements conducive to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.advertisementFollowing further investigation, sections 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, pertaining to membership of a terrorist organisation and providing support to such groups, were added to the case, which was subsequently transferred from Lakadganj police to the ATS.

Pakistan Stares At Crop-Sowing Crisis As India's Indus Treaty Suspension Dries Out Major Dams

Last Updated: Pakistan reportedly faces a severe water crisis with low dam levels, putting its kharif crop season on the danger. This comes as India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty. A couple of days after Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh said Pakistan was violating the Indus Water Treaty through terrorism, a report has claimed the neighbouring country was in a crop-sowing crisis since dams there were drying out. According to a report with The Times Of India, water level in two key dams in Pakistan, Mangla on River Jhelum and Tarbela on Indus, are running low, driving Pakistan to stare at a bleak kharif sowing season. Following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, India announced the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty as part of several punitive measures against Pakistan. The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan with the World Bank as a signatory, governs the sharing of the Indus River system's waters between the two countries. According to the report, the latest estimates by Pakistan's Indus River System Authority, the country is already facing an overall shortage of 21 per cent in water flow and nearly 50 per cent in live storage from the two key dams. The condition probably drove Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to say at the International Conference on Glaciers' Preservation that his country would not allow India to cross the red line by holding the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and endangering millions of lives for narrow political gains. 'India's unilateral and illegal decision to hold in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs the sharing of the Indus Basin's water, is deeply regrettable," Pakistani newspaper Dawn quoted Sharif as saying. Last week, India reiterated that any engagement with Pakistan will only be bilateral; terror and talks cannot go together; and that the Indus Waters Treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan 'credibly and irrevocably abjures" its support for cross-border terrorism. The Ministry of External Affairs' strong response came at a time when Pakistan, pushed on the backfoot by India's decisive 'Operation Sindoor', has suddenly started talking about its intent on having peace talks with India. Maharashtra ATS conducting massive raids in Padgha over suspected terror planning activities

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), along with the Thane Rural police, is conducting massive searches at various households in the Padgha area near Bhiwandi Monday in connection with suspected terror planning activities, sources said. The raids are being carried out by over 250 police personnel, including 20 ATS teams, at 15 places based on special intelligence received recently, the sources told The Indian Express. The epicentre of the raids, ATS sources said, is the house of terror suspect Saquib Nachan, who the NIA had claimed to be the head of the Maharashtra module of ISIS. Who is Nachan? Having been booked in over a dozen terror-related cases, Saquib Nachan has been under the radar of security agencies since the 1990s. He was convicted twice – once by the Supreme Court in 1997 for planning terror attacks in India in the early 1990s along with Khalistani terrorists. In 2016, he was convicted again by a court in Mumbai for 10 years under the Arms Act after being booked in the 2002-03 terror blasts in Mumbai. He served both sentences and was released in 2017. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which had raided Padgha in December 2023 among other places in Maharashtra and arrested 15 people, has previously claimed that Nachan was head of the state ISIS module which was planning to carry out destructive and violent activities in the country. Huge amounts of unaccounted cash, firearms, sharp-edged weapons, incriminating documents, smartphones and other digital devices were seized during the December 2023 raids. According to the NIA, Nachan administered the 'bayath' or oath of allegiance to the people joining the proscribed organisation. His son Shamil Nachan was also arrested by the agency in Maharashtra in an ISIS module-related terror case. Why Padgha According to ATS sources, Padgha has in recent years been a hub of terror suspects. As per anti-terrorism agencies, the Maharashtra ISIS module had self-declared the village of Padgha as a 'liberated zone' and as 'Al Sham'. Terror suspects allegedly motivated impressionable Muslim youth to relocate to Padgha to strengthen their base there. The last time NIA had raided Padgha and the Borivali area nearby, they had found that all members of the ISIS Maharashtra module were operating from Padgha-Borivali, where they had hatched a conspiracy to spread terror and carry out acts of violence across India. 'Pursuing the path of violent jihad, khilafat, etc, the accused had aimed to disturb the peace and communal harmony of the country and to wage a war against the Government of India,' the central agency had previously stated. ISIS, a global terror organisation, has been spreading its network in India by establishing localized modules and cells in various states.

PM Modi's rule inspires global trust, says Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy Sunday asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance has earned the trust and faith of the entire world, highlighting an eleven-year tenure free of corruption. Speaking in the meeting of the office bearers of the party at the BJP headquarters on Sunday, Reddy vehemently criticised the Congress and BRS as corrupt and family-centric parties, urging BJP cadres to disseminate details of Modi's transformative rule to every household. Reddy underscored the Modi government's 'zero tolerance' approach to corruption, contrasting it sharply with what he described as the 'scam-ridden' UPA regime. He emphasised the need to communicate the achievements of Modi's eleven years in power to the public, particularly in rural areas. The Minister lauded the current administration's efforts in strengthening states financially, noting an increase in central fund allocation from 32 per cent during Congress rule to the current 42 per cent. He pointed to the implementation of a 'corruption-free and efficient' Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. Reddy also highlighted a significant improvement in national security, claiming that while terrorist attacks, including those in Hyderabad, were commonplace during the Congress era, not a single major attack has occurred in the last 11 years. He specifically mentioned the destruction of the Pakistan-ISI network under Modi's leadership and recalled the loss of 42,000 lives – civilians and soldiers – in terror attacks during Congress' tenure. Reddy provided examples of the Modi government's decisive action against terrorism, citing the 'strong message' sent to militants following attacks and successful operations like the surgical strikes in Pathankot and air strikes, alongside a third operation dubbed 'Sindoor'. He also proudly spoke of the simultaneous modernisation of 1,300 railway stations across the country, including 40 in Telangana, a feat he attributed to the BJP and NDA. He also noted the end of power shortages that plagued industries under previous governments. Turning to social and economic reforms, Reddy highlighted the end of fertiliser shortages, with subsidies maintained without price increases. He credited Modi with the development of significant religious sites like the Kashi Vishwanath and Ujjain Mahakal temples. He lambasted the Congress' legacy on issues like Article 370, linking it to the nation's vulnerability to terrorism. The Minister also proudly listed initiatives such as providing 5 kg of rice to the poor, gas cylinders, housing, and water, as well as the Ayushman Bharat scheme extending healthcare to those over 70. Reddy called on the people of Telangana to protect the state from these 'family and corrupt parties,' asserting that the BJP was the only party genuinely committed to the state's development. He expressed confidence that the party could secure power in the upcoming assembly elections, urging them to abandon passive attitudes and work diligently. He dismissed the ongoing political and family dramas in Telangana, urging citizens not to be drawn into them, and instead to expose the corruption and irregularities of the BRS and Congress. He concluded by reiterating the call for unity under 'one flag and one agenda' inspired by the Prime Minister, and urged active participation in upcoming events like Environment Day on June 5 and Yoga Day on June 21, along with good governance programmes from June 8 to 18.
