Analysis: The numbers behind Kayode's 'impressive impact'

Yahoo02-05-2025

Nottingham Forest have had the City Ground rocking on a regular basis during their fantastic 2024/25 campaign, but a sensational all-round display from Brentford sent the home fans flocking for the exits early on Thursday night.
Fifth in the table, level on points with Chelsea, Nuno Espírito Santo's side are still right in the hunt for Europe, but the Bees dented Forest's UEFA Champions League hopes with a 2-0 win that allied a razor-sharp cutting edge in attack with impressive defensive resolve.
Goals either side of the break from Kevin Schade and Yoane Wissa did the damage as the west Londoners recorded their sixth away win of 2025 courtesy of a rock-solid performance that strengthened their bid for a place in next season's Europa Conference League.

Brentford have won more away points (19) than any other team in the Premier League since the turn of the year and their latest victory on the road moved Thomas Frank's side to within two points of eighth-placed Fulham.
Head coach Frank's delight with a "very robust" display was clear for all to see at the final whistle and the Dane was full of praise for his backline, which appears stronger than ever following the addition of Fiorentina loanee Michael Kayode.
The Italian Under-21 international has made an impressive impact since his arrival in January and he was outstanding on the night against a Forest side whose ability to launch lightning-fast counters in wide areas has become something of a calling card.

The 20-year-old right-back had seen off the threat posed by Callum Hudson-Odoi by half-time, as the winger was subbed at the break, and Kayode's athleticism and defensive intelligence means he retains a 100 per cent success rate in 1v1 situations in a Brentford shirt.
Notably, 49 per cent of the Bees' attacks came down Kayode's right flank against Forest and the Juventus academy product progressed the ball well in possession, in addition to his watertight defensive work.
Brentford stood firm on a night of flighty weather, which centre-half Nathan Collins afterwards said was only missing snow, and the Irish centre-back delivered another stunning all-round display, with seven aerials won and 13 clearances only upstaged by his laser-guided assist for Schade's opening goal.
Collins (112) is now ahead of Liverpool colossus Virgil van Dijk (110), and behind only Newcastle United's Dan Burn (129), for aerial duels won this season and still leads the entire division for shots blocked in 2024/25 with 49.

Sepp van den Berg again impressed alongside Collins, the young Dutchman finishing with the best pass completion percentage (93%) of any player on the pitch against Forest, while his compatriot Mark Flekken added to his personal collection of impressive statistics.
Along with Manchester City's Ederson (4), Flekken (now 3) is one of only two goalkeepers with multiple Premier League assists over the past two seasons and the Netherlands international's pinged goal kick bamboozled Nikola Milenković to allow Wissa to coolly dink home Brentford's second goal of the night.
Sharp in attack and solid in defence at Forest, Frank's side will now train their sights on Sunday's huge home game against a Manchester United team buoyed by Europa League success against Athletic Bilbao

Red Sox fans fume over Rafael Devers trade as $100 million conspiracy theory emerges

The Red Sox, somehow, had the best and worst weekend at the same time. While Boston swept the rival Yankees, it was moments after Sunday's matinee game that the joy was ripped away when it was shockingly announced the Red Sox had traded star Rafael Devers to the Giants. Red Sox fans were not prepared for this rollercoaster of emotions and lambasted the franchise for being cheap once again. Advertisement 'Baseball is Dead' podcast host Jared Carrabis took to X to air his feelings about the deal. 3 Former Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers AP 'How the f–k do you trade Rafael Devers?' Carrabis said. 'For A: That return and B: the moment in which you did it.' Advertisement Ringer founder Bill Simmons presented a theory on X about a possible reason for the trade. The owner of the Red Sox, John Henry, also owns the Premier League-winning soccer team Liverpool. Simmons hinted on X that the possible motive behind the trade was to help finance the newest transfer to Liverpool, Florian Wirtz. Liverpool reportedly paid his former club $100 million for the midfielder. Devers is in the third season of a 10-year, $313 million contract and had been at odds with the team this spring training, after he was moved from third base to DH for the newly signed Alex Bregman. Advertisement It is not the first time ownership has traded one of its star players, much to the frustration of its fan base. Mookie Betts was traded to the Dodgers before the 2020 season for three players who did not pan out. Betts was in the final year of his contract and would sign a 12-year, $365 million deal with Los Angeles — and he has since helped the franchise win two World Series. AFP via Getty Images 'I woke up still mad another the Devers trade,' Barstool founder Dave Portnoy wrote on X. 'If you are trying to win you just don't trade your best hitter for nothing in the middle of the season. John Henry and (minority owner) LeBron [James] have turned the Red Sox into the Oakland A's with fancy hubcaps.' It seems like history has repeated itself yet again in Boston. Hopefully, this time, it will work out better.

Bryan Mbeumo responds to transfer speculation after Man United transfer bid

Bryan Mbeumo has spoken publicly for the first time since Manchester United and Tottenham launched their battle for his signature. The 25-year-old appears to be on his way out of Brentford after an outstanding season in which he scored 20 goals for the west London club. Advertisement Manchester United have seen a first offer rejected, in the region of £45m with £10m in add-ons, and Spurs have stepped up their interest after hiring ex-Brentford boss Thomas Frank to replace the sacked Ange Postecoglou. Speaking to Sky Sports at the Canadian Grand Prix, Mbeumo said: 'It (transfer speculation) is a bit new for me I would say! I think it can be the life of a footballer and you need to accept it. 'It's been my best season so far in the Premier League. And even collectively, I think we did play very good games. I think we've been unlucky to chase the Europe spot, but I think it's been a fantastic season.' Bryan Mbeumo is the subject of much speculation this summer (PA) United are reported to be preparing a second bid and believe they have the edge over Spurs in the race to lure Mbeumo. But Spurs now have Frank in their corner – as well as Champions League football after beating United in the Europa League final – and Mbeumo lauded his former manager's talents. Advertisement 'He's done so much for me, he literally trusted me from the start. I think he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player as well. So I can only wish him all the best, and I'm sure he's going to do well. 'I think he knows everything. He's really smart. He knows where he wants to bring the team, how he wants to play. I think he's been fantastic for Brentford. I think he's going to [need] some time to adapt, obviously: [Champions League] games, more expectations, but I'm sure he's going to do well. 'He knows how to talk to people. He knows how to build a group. And that's why we've been playing so well.'

Bournemouth signs left back Truffert from Rennes amid reported imminent exit of Kerkez

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Bournemouth signed France left back Adrien Truffert from Rennes on Monday, potentially paving the way for Milos Kerkez to leave amid reported interest from Liverpool. The 23-year-old Truffert has joined on a five-year contract after deciding to leave Rennes, where he was the captain. Advertisement 'It's a dream for any player to play in the Premier League,' Truffert said 'It's one of the best and most competitive leagues in the world. "I'm looking forward to testing myself at this level, facing top players every week and helping the team achieve great things.' British media have reported that Kerkez is heading to Premier League champion Liverpool, which would continue the breakup of Bournemouth's defense following Dean Huijsen's move to Real Madrid. Belgium-born Truffert won his lone international cap for France as a substitute in a 2-0 loss to Denmark in the Nations League in September 2022. ___ AP soccer:
