Further, Yeo proposed fostering communication between the two countries' overseas missions and trade promotion agencies to ensure the successful hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, summit, set to be held in South Korea, and the Osaka Kansai Expo in Japan this year. Separately, Yeo held a meeting with visiting US Rep. Richard McCormick and Rep. Beth Van Duyne, seeking to secure a stable trade environment. The meeting focused on bolstering economic cooperation as uncertainties linger after a recent tariff agreement between Seoul and Washington. The minister asked for their support, indicating the significant South Korean investments in their home states, spanning chips, energy and automobiles. Noting that "many areas still need negotiating between interested parties," Yeo asked them to pay extra attention to "creating a stable environment for Korean companies to trade and invest," according to the ministry. Samsung Electronics has been building a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Taylor, Texas. Hyundai Motor Group is constructing a new electric vehicle plant in Georgia and partnering with Korean battery maker SK On to build a battery plant there, in addition to SK On's two battery plants in the state. Lee to hold dinner meeting with foreign envoys in Seoul
President Lee Jae Myung will host a dinner on Friday for the foreign ambassadors and diplomats to South Korea, using the occasion to rally support for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit to be held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, later this year, his office said Thursday. Friday's event will mark the first of its kind since Lee took office in June, with invitations extended to ambassadors from 117 countries with resident missions in South Korea and representatives of 30 international agencies based in Seoul, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said. Besides foreign ambassadors and diplomats, the Lee administration's special envoys abroad, lawmakers from the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, Cabinet members, and leaders of major businesses and economic associations will attend the dinner meeting as well, according to Kang. The dinner event will begin with a prereception, followed by Lee's speech. After dinner, Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jin-a will brief the attendees on preparations for the APEC summit. Remarks will be made by foreign ambassadors and diplomats before the event wraps up. With less than three months left until South Korea hosts the 2025 APEC, scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, Lee plans to express his hopes that the diplomatic corps in South Korea would serve as 'a bridge for communication' among nations, Kang explained. 'Through his dinner address, President Lee will call on the diplomatic corps in South Korea to serve as a bridge for communication among nations, while outlining our government's pragmatic diplomacy focused on the national interest,' Kang said. 'He will also introduce the multilateral diplomatic schedule for the second half of the year and request the cooperation and support of all foreign envoys in South Korea, including those from APEC member states, to ensure the success of the APEC summit in Gyeongju,' she added. Kang also noted that the APEC summit is being held in South Korea for the first time in 20 years. The last time South Korea hosted the APEC summit was in 2005 in Busan.

S. Korea to expand APEC cooperation amid global trade shifts: trade minister
South Korea is set to expand cooperation with countries in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation region to navigate recent changes in the global trade environment driven by the rise of trade protectionism, the trade minister said Tuesday. "Considering South Korea's heavy dependence on trade and the manufacturing industry, the recent changes in the global trade environment are expected to have a bigger impact on our economy," Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said during his special address to a general assembly of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council held in Seoul. The PECC is an official policy think tank for APEC that played a key role in its establishment in 1989. "The global trade environment is undergoing a structural transition," Yeo said, citing the security-driven approach to economic issues, the weaponization of trade interdependence, and innovation in artificial intelligence and digital technologies as main reasons for the change. To respond to these challenges, Yeo said his country plans to expand cooperation with the Global South, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and India. The goal is to diversify its supply chains and export destinations, while devising integrated policy on trade, industry and security issues. Seoul also aims to take the lead in global efforts to shape new trade norms in areas such as climate change, supply chains and AI, he explained. "We are now at a turning point where the traditional framework of trade, which has enabled global economic growth, is undergoing a fundamental shift," Yeo said, noting "the creative and practical cooperation of APEC member economies is more necessary than ever." The PECC meeting brought together some 200 officials from the governments, companies and academia of the APEC member economies to discuss changes in global trade, the development of AI and demographic shifts, according to Seoul's industry ministry. The ministry said it is preparing a series of international business events, such as the Invest Korea Summit and the CEO Summit to be hosted by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to be held before the upcoming APEC summit in Gyeongju, about 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, in October.
