Britain's King Charles III speaks with former England captain David Beckham at the Chelsea Flower Show in London in May 2025
By James PHEBY
Former England soccer captain and global fashion icon David Beckham was knighted on Friday for his services to sport and charity, with The Who singer Roger Daltrey and actor Gary Oldman also receiving the honor.
Beckham, who played 115 times for England as well as for some of the world's most high-profile clubs including Manchester United and Real Madrid, will now be known as "sir" and his wife Victoria, a former member of the Spice Girls pop group, will be known as Lady Beckham.
The 50-year-old, who has long been in the running for a knighthood, was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 -- a lesser award in Britain's honors system.
Victoria later received the same award for services to the fashion industry.
"Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honor," Beckham said in a statement issued to the Press Association.
"I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognized for work that gives me so much fulfillment," he added.
Beckham's knighthood is the culmination of years of tireless efforts to transcend soccer and turn himself into a global icon at the intersection of sport, fashion and business.
The honor, one of the highest bestowed by the UK state, "is a powerful symbolic marker", Marie Agnes Parmentier, professor of marketing at the University of Montreal and author of several papers on "Posh and Becks", explained to AFP.
Even at the height of his career, Beckham was building his global brand with thought to his retirement.
His appearance in a sarong, revelations that he used make-up and his eccentric hairstyles were all feverishly gobbled up by the UK's tabloid press.
He also had to overcome the tag as England's "most-hated man" after being sent off during the 1998 World Cup in a knockout game against Argentina.
Beckham is understood to have been on the verge of receiving a knighthood after helping London win its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
But UK authorities placed a red flag on his nomination due to his involvement in an alleged tax avoidance scheme, according to previous reports. He was subsequently cleared.
Daltrey, who co-founded The Who in 1964, will also take the title of sir having been recognized for his services to charity and music in King Charles III's Birthday Honors list.
The 81-year-old singer has been a patron of Teenage Cancer Trust since 2000, holding fundraising concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall for more than two decades.
"It's kind of weird, but I am deeply honored to get this, especially for the charity for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and I accept it on their behalf really, because this honor is really for all unsung heroes," the "My Generation" singer told the Press Association.
"It's a dream come true for me, but it's especially a dream because the charity means so much," he added.
Oldman, who won a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in 2017's "Darkest Hour", also received a knighthood for his services to drama.
The 67-year-old's films have earned over $11 billion, and his credits include the "Harry Potter" series, The "Dark Knight" Trilogy and "Air Force One", along with cameo appearances in sitcom "Friends" and music videos for David Bowie and Guns N' Roses.
Stage star Elaine Page, who played Eva Peron in the first production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita", and novelist Pat Barker have both been made dames.
Barker is known for her World War I "Regeneration Trilogy", the first book of which was turned into a Hollywood film starring Jonathan Pryce.

Osaka: Hanazono Rugby Stadium Connects People by One Team Spirit; Place for Citizens to Gather and Relax

The Yomiuri Shimbun The lattice-patterned front gate of Hanazono Rugby Stadium is seen in Higashi-Osaka, Osaka Prefecture. When photographed with a fisheye lens, it appears oval, resembling a rugby ball. HIGASHI-OSAKA, Osaka — Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Higashi-Osaka, Osaka Prefecture, debuted as Japan's first rugby stadium in November 1929. Considered sacred ground for Japanese rugby players and fans, the stadium has hosted numerous memorable matches, including those during the annual National High School Rugby Tournament and the Rugby World Cup 2019. The stadium has also become a place for visitors to gather and relax. The front gate features a diamond-shaped lattice pattern, which was designed with a motif of rugby players forming a scrum. Upon entering the stadium, I saw the lush green turf shining in the early summer sun. According to a history of the Kintetsu Rugby Club, the construction of the stadium was prompted by 'two remarks' from Prince Chichibu (1902-53). The prince was the younger brother of Emperor Showa and known for his dedication to promoting Japanese sports, including rugby. In February 1928, Prince Chichibu was riding a train through the area and looking out the window at the rural landscape. Then he suggested to senior executives of the railway company, 'How about constructing a rugby stadium here?' The company was what is now Kintetsu Railway Co. While the executives were still discussing how to respond to the suggestion, the prince boarded the train again and urged them, asking, 'Can't you do it yet?' Records show that construction began in March of the following year and was completed seven months later. It was rushed but resulted in an impressive job. The stadium was modeled after London's Twickenham Stadium, known as the 'Home of England Rugby,' and boasted a majestic appearance with a large iron roof over the main stands. The Yomiuri Shimbun Hanazono Rugby Stadium is seen from the bleachers. Hanazono Rugby Stadium is also known for hosting the annual National High School Rugby Tournament. Young rugby players from all over the country train hard with the aim of reaching this place. Ryozo Imazato, 78, who played for and also coached the Kintetsu Rugby Club, first set foot on the Hanazono turf in his second year of high school. 'It felt so soft that it was like running on clouds,' he said. Imazato also participated in the final of the company championship held at the stadium in January 1975. The punt he kicked in desperation was grabbed by his teammate, who scored a try, clinching an upset victory and bringing the championship to Kintetsu. 'A team that gives its all to rugby will eventually be favored by good luck. I knew a god lived in Hanazono,' he said. The club is now the Hanazono Kintetsu Liners. In 2015, the stadium's ownership was transferred from Kintetsu to the municipal government of Higashi-Osaka. Together with its large-scale renovation, the stadium ushered in a turning point. After the 2019 World Cup, the city is aiming to utilize Hanazono Central Park as a whole, including the rugby stadium. There is a children's facility in the park. Meanwhile, a new cafe was built in the stadium facility, and a barbecue area was added to the park. Although direct comparisons are difficult due to a change in counting methods, the number of visitors to the park, which hovered around 600,000 until fiscal 2018, increased to as many as 1.57 million in fiscal 2024. I met a 52-year-old man who lives near the park and came to take a stroll with his family. He said proudly, 'There's nothing more wonderful than having such a place nearby to boast about to the rest of the country.' The park now attracts everyone from children enjoying sports to elderly playing shogi, Japanese chess, under the shade of the trees. The rugby stadium is a pivotal presence in the park. 'Rugby has the power to connect people by team spirit,' said an official at the municipal government. 'We hope the park will become a place which attracts citizens and makes them feel proud to be there.' Scrum street lifts fans' spirits The about 400-meter road stretching from Higashi-Hanazono Station to the Hanazono Rugby Stadium is affectionately known as 'Scrum Road Hanazono.' As part of the city's campaign to host the Rugby World Cup 2019, the city government solicited suggestions for names for the road from its citizens in 2010. From 473 applications, the name 'Scrum Road' was chosen because it was thought that the name would 'help realize the bid to host the World Cup with citizens, businesses and the government working together.' The road is lined with stores selling rugby goods and a Japanese-style confectionery store selling manju buns shaped like rugby balls. There are also stores that sell boxed lunches boasting large portions that can even satisfy the stomachs of rugby players. The Yomiuri Shimbun 'Scrum Road Hanazono,' a path lined with the names of high school rugby teams that have won the National High School Rugby Tournament On the streetlights, the names of past winners of the National High School Tournaments are displayed along with illustrations of their jerseys. In late May, rugby fans flooded the streets on the weekend that the Japan Rugby League One playoff tournament was held. 'We hope people's spirits will be lifted while walking this path and they become more familiar with Hanazono,' a city official said. Cheers with Craft Lager At Hanazono Craft, which opened last August on Scrum Road Hanazono, you can taste home-brewed craft beer and homemade cola. The Yomiuri Shimbun Original beers available at Hanazono Craft It offers staple Lager and Weizen, both ¥900 per medium-sized glass, including tax. Both are fully brewed but taste smooth and are easy to drink. Also available are two specially brewed beers, though only in limited quantities. The store also offers craft beers from across the country as well as light meals. The cola, made with a blend of more than 10 different spices, will be the perfect drink for the upcoming season.

Liverpool banks on 'world-class' Wirtz after record deal

soccer By Kieran CANNING The golden boy of German soccer is set to become the new prince of the Premier League as Florian Wirtz prepares to join Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee. Fresh from winning a 20th English top-flight title, Arne Slot's Reds have broken the bank to land a rising star already labelled as one of the world's best by former Reds midfielder and Wirtz's former coach Xabi Alonso. British media reported on Friday that the Premier League champions had agreed a club-record deal worth up to £116 million ($157 million) to secure the services of the attacking midfielder. Liverpool can now agree personal terms with a player coveted by a number of top European clubs. Wirtz's abundant potential as a teenager sparked a row between his hometown club Cologne and Leverkusen five years ago when Leverkusen, who are backed by pharmaceutical giants Bayer, swooped to sign him at 17. Cologne argued that a gentleman's agreement not to poach youth team players had been violated, but Leverkusen said Wirtz was a first-team signing and within months he had made his Bundesliga debut. His rise was interrupted by a cruciate knee ligament injury in March 2022 that forced him to miss the next 10 months. By the time he returned, Alonso had been installed as Leverkusen boss and together they would spearhead the club's greatest days. Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich's grip on the Bundesliga in stunning fashion, romping to the title and the German Cup without losing a single match in the 2023/24 season. Wirtz netted his first career hat-trick on the day the title was sealed against Werder Bremen, on his way to being crowned Bundesliga player of the year. "Flo is one of the top players in the world, he's world class," said Alonso, who compared his protege to Lionel Messi in terms of his understanding of the game. "Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball'," said Alonso, a hero of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph. "It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good." Both star player and coach committed to staying with the Leverkusen project for another 12 months, but defeat in the Europa League final to Atalanta to round off the 2023/24 campaign was a sign of things to come. Bayern restored their grip on the German game last season but could not convince Wirtz to follow the lead of many others in joining from their Bundesliga rivals. Instead, he made it clear his preference was a move to the Premier League champions and the chance to add his name to Liverpool's cast of legends. "A huge talent, huge future in front of him, so Liverpool is the place for him," said the club's former captain Steven Gerrard. Despite 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen, Wirtz will begin life at Anfield in the shadow of Mohamed Salah. But the Reds are banking on Wirtz's creativity to help maintain the 32-year-old's prolific goalscoring numbers and ease the burden of carrying the Liverpool attack. The club's previous record signing, £85 million recruit Darwin Nunez, has failed to deliver and could be sold to help recoup some of their major outlay on new faces. Liverpool will hope Wirtz can handle the pressure of his price tag and the physicality of the Premier League to ensure there is no second season slump under Slot. Former Germany head coach Hansi Flick is in no doubt about what the midfielder has to offer. "He's simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick," he said. "He's the full package." © 2025 AFP
