Taoiseach calls on Kneecap to ‘urgently clarify' their views
Belfast rap trio Kneecap must 'urgently clarify' alleged comments attributed to band members around support for Hamas and Hezbollah, and the killing of Tory MPs, the Taoiseach has said.
Micheál Martin called for the clarification after a video emerged of the group at a November 2023 gig, appearing to show one member saying: 'The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.'

Counter-terrorism police in London are examining the footage, along with a video clip from another concert in November 2024 in which a member of the band appeared to shout 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' – groups which are banned as terrorist organisations in the UK.

Mr Martin was asked about the clips as he spoke to reporters in Dublin on Monday. He said it was 'important' for the band to clarify its position.
'Have they, or do they, support Hamas and Hezbollah, because that would be unacceptable,' he said.
'I mean, Hezbollah are responsible, in my view, for the murder of Sean Rooney [Irish soldier killed in Lebanon in 2022].

'And both Hamas and Hezbollah have views that are absolutely… not just views, but participated in terrorist activities and appalling killing of innocent people, as witnessed on October 7th.
'But it's not clear to me that they do, that Kneecap does support Hezbollah and Hamas. It's been asserted that they have made commentary in support of both. I think they need to urgently clarify that.
'Again, I haven't heard in respect [of the comments about MPs], but again we've had some horrific events in terms of the killing of MPs in Britain, so there's a huge responsibility on everybody to be very, very focused in terms of the protection of public representatives and the safety of public representatives, irrespective of what political views we have.
'I think it's important that free speech is always facilitated and the capacity to speak out and criticise, and condemn policies of others.

'That's all legitimate. But in terms of life and security and safety of people, that's a different issue.'
Mr Martin was also asked about the criticism Kneecap has faced in the US over its recent performance during the major music festival Coachella, held in California.
At Coachella, Kneecap displayed messages which read: 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people'; 'It is being enabled by the US g,overnment who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes'; and 'F*** Israel. Free Palestine'.
Mr Martin was asked to comment on calls from some of the band's critics for its members to be denied a new US visa ahead of future gigs in the country.

He replied: 'First of all, I think we need clarity.
'This has been asserted, albeit in respect to one or two public events, and I think it would benefit the entire conversation if Kneecap were to clarify urgently their position in respect of Hezbollah for example, and in respect of Hamas, and also their very clear denunciation of any violence or threat of violence against public representatives, I think that's very, very important.
'In the broader scheme of things, in arts and creative arts and so on like that, people have always been facilitated in terms of their right to criticise particular policies and so on. There's no issue there.'

I'm an engineer hoping to be the first Palestinian Scot elected to Holyrood
Adam Al-khateb, who is currently running to be the list candidate for the Scottish Greens in Lothian, is hoping to make history by becoming the first Arab candidate elected to Holyrood. The 32-year-old Edinburgh-born activist, who is standing for selection on the Scottish Green Party's regional list in Lothian, told The National he wants to give voice to underrepresented communities — particularly Palestinians and the wider Arab and Muslim population in Scotland. Al-khateb is the co-convener of the party's Palestine Solidarity Group and has been a member of the Greens since 2024, citing the party's strong stance on Gaza as a key reason for joining alongside his own environmental background. In fact, no Arab has ever stood for Scottish Parliament. So if selected, it would be a historic milestone — not just for the Greens, but for Scottish politics," he said. Al-khateb said he's never felt represented by the cohort of MSPs in Holyrood, adding: "That's one of the biggest reasons I'm standing — to give Palestinians and the wider Arab community a voice. We've had some great representation from other communities, particularly politicians with Asian heritage, but never from the Arab community." Former first minister Humza Yousaf was the countries first Muslim leader, and Anas Sarwar is the first leader of the opposition who is also Muslim. Both have faced fierce discrimination, most recently from rising Reform UK in the form of campaign materials targeting Sarwar. Al-khateb was born in the capital and attended Edinburgh Napier University where he studied energy and environmental engineering. Alongside his Scottish culture, he always remained in touch with his Palestinian heritage. He shared: "My grandparents were 1948 Nakba survivors — they were forcibly displaced by the creation of Israel and settled in various Arab states. My mother came to Scotland in the 1980s to study, and that's how we ended up here. Most of my extended family are still in the Middle East. "It's been hard on my family — being far from home, especially in times of crisis. But the sense of community here has helped. And yes, the current situation has absolutely inspired me to enter politics. I want our voices to be heard." Al-khateb said in recent years, as Israel's genocide in Gaza has escalated, he and his family have felt Scotland's solidarity with the country grow from its already solid grassroots foundations. "Growing up was quite difficult — there wasn't a large Arab or Palestinian community around me at the time. A lot of my friends and peers were Scottish or European, and I didn't have a strong sense of cultural community around me. "But more recently, that's changed. Despite what's going on globally, we now have a stronger Arab and Palestinian presence here in Scotland, and that support makes a big difference. There's a sense of solidarity and connection that wasn't there before." I bring skills, credibility, and lived experience." He also believes he can help the Greens grow their vote by using his strong ties with Muslim, Arab, Asian, and African communities in the Lothian region. "These are communities who might vote Green for the first time if they see someone they trust and identify with." The Greens are currently undertaking a two-week internal selection period. By mid-July, the party will have selected candidates.

Gangster Ross Monaghan sold square sausage for cash in Costa del "Shop and Drop"
The slain hood had a grocery delivery business that catered for expat tastes - including Irn Bru. Slain Scots gangster Ross Monaghan ran an online supermarket selling expats a taste from home as a successful sideline before he was murdered in a gangland execution in the Costa Del Sol. The 46-year-old dad-of-two became a director of Costa Shop And Drop after fleeing to Spain following a botched hit attempt outside a Glasgow primary school. As well as running his Monaghan's Irish bar in Fuengirola - where he was murdered alongside pal Eddie Lyons jnr - he also operated an online shop for expat Scots stocking square sausage, Irn Bru and other UK goods. Monaghan, killed after being cornered in his bar in Fuengirola moments after his 43-year-old gang pal Eddie Lyons Jr was shot dead, used the sales slogan: 'Craving Your Favourite British Food?' Other items in stock include started Walkers Crisps, Weetabix, Colman's Mustard and Pot Noodles. The company, which continues to sell products from their Malaga warehouse, also markets toiletries and beauty products. It offers next-day delivery on all orders placed within the Costa del Sol, describing itself online as a 'new and exciting' service and boasting: 'Our prices are often lower than the market leading competitors.' On the firm's website it states: 'Costa Shop & Drop was established in 2020 in order to bring the very best British branded food, drink and household products direct to your home. 'In the midst of a global pandemic, we came to the realisation there was a huge demand for people to order the products they love from the UK and for them to be delivered directly to their home without the need to travel. The idea of Costa Shop & Drop was born! 'Our ethos is customer based and we strive towards meeting the needs of you, the customer! 'Same day ordering and delivery service – 7 days a week!' Monaghan was a senior member of the Lyons gang who Spanish police believe was murdered at Monaghan's bar by a hitman working for the rival Daniel criminal organisation. He was appointed sole director of the Spanish ex-pat shopping firm on February 8 2021. The company began operating on the same date with a registered office on Malaga's Guadalhorce industrial estate a stone's throw from the city airport used by millions of Brits every year. But despite publicising itself across social media, a Daily Record investigation can today reveal official documents show it has failed to file annual tax returns since its launch year. Company registrars have already given the firm a rap over the knuckles for failing to comply with its legal obligations by preventing it from making changes to its official registration sheet. The decision is explained in an official Spanish Companies House document we have had access to called 'Special Situation of Costa Shop and Drop.' The online supermarket home delivery service stopped updating its social media after its registered director and his gangster friend were gunned down at Monaghans Irish Bar in Fuengirola on May 31 following the Champions League final. But on Monday the firm posted for the first time since the gruesome double murder, saying in a post on its official Instagram site titled 'Convenience Delivered' : 'Life's busy - let us handle your shopping! 'Costa Shop & Drop delivers groceries, household essentials, and UK favourites right to your door - even to remote areas. 'Spend less time shopping and more time enjoying life.' A second post the same day alongside a photo of a uniformed delivery man added: 'From fresh produce to household essentials, we've got you covered. 'Plus, enjoy free delivery on orders over 25 euros.' There is no mention of Monaghan on the firm's website or its social media accounts, although the pub he owned is a registered follower of its official Instagram site. Over the weekend it emerged the drinking hole where the Scots hoods were shot dead has reopened under the new name Irish Rover with a 'well-known' local landlord called Clive. The assassin suspected of murdering Monaghan and Lyons Jr was held in Liverpool on June 13 on an international arrest warrant issued by a court in Fuengirola. Michael Riley, 44, is on remand in prison after confirming he is fighting extradition to Spain. Spanish police chiefs described the man who shot the Scots mobsters late last month as a member of the rival Daniel crime clan, despite Police Scotland saying they had 'no intelligence' to suggest the killings were linked to the ongoing gangland turf war here. Malaga-based Spanish National Police chief superintendent Pedro Agudo Novo revealed last week at a packed press conference the dramatic Liverpool arrest was made after detectives discovered the alleged gunman was about to flee his UK bolthole for a 'paradise island tax haven.' He said: 'The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs.' Saying he had fled Spain via Portugal before taking a plane to Leeds, he added: 'I want to highlight the high level of professionalism of this individual. Not only did he walk up to the table where the victims were sitting and kill the first man before continuing with his mission when his gun jammed. 'It's not normal for a criminal to react the way he did in the face of this unexpected problem and resolve the situation to continue and pursue his second victim inside the bar and kill him.' Career criminal Monaghan, who fled Scotland for Spain after a failed attempt on his life outside a Glasgow primary school in 2017, was tried but acquitted over the murder of notorious Glasgow hood Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll at an Asda car park in 2010. In August 2017 he and Eddie Lyons Jr, both members of the Lyons Glasgow crime family, were cleared of being involved in a brutal street attack on three men outside the Campsie bar in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire. The Fuengirola pub murders followed the fatal shooting nearly seven weeks ago of a 32-year-old British man in nearby Calahonda a 15-minute drive from the Irish bar towards Marbella. He was shot dead around 8pm on April 21 in a professional hit as he headed back to his car after finishing a football match with friends. The victim has not been named but was known to come from Liverpool. The Daily Record has asked management of Costa Shop and Drop to comment.
