
PNVF announces 16-man lineup for Alas Pilipinas Invitationals
The longtime national team outside spiker leads the 16-man lineup announced by Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) on Monday, just a day before they plunge into action in the invitational tournament set to prepare the squad for the 2025 FIVB Men's World Championship here.
Also included are other mainstays Joshua Retamar, Steven Rotter, Kim Malabunga, JP Bugaoan, Joshua Umandal, Jack Kalingking, Lloyd Josafat, and Louie Ramirez.
PNVF has also tapped several collegiate stars in Josh Ybañez of UST, Ken Batas of Ateneo, Echo Adajar of La Salle, and the National University troika of Peng Taguibolos, Leo Ordiales, and Buds Buddin.
Rounding out the squad is Filipino-American Jackson Reed.
Alas Men will open their bid on Tuesday against Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi of Indonesia before taking on Hyundai Capital Skywalkers of South Korea and Thailand national team on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Maria III, and Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) President Ramon 'Tats' Suzara led the presentation of the stamps during the 'Set Natin 'To' launch event last week. Arroyo said PHLPost is honored to be part of the historic event. 'PHLPost is honored to be part of this historic milestone, as the world's best volleyball athletes bring their skill, discipline, and heart to Philippine soil. This is more than a tournament—it is a celebration of resilience and excellence, values that every Filipino athlete carries with pride,' Arroyo said. 'On behalf of PHLPost, we extend our gratitude to the organizers, athletes, and fans—whether in the stands or at home. Together, the Filipino people are set to celebrate not only the sport of volleyball, but also the unity and passion that define us as a community,' According to the Post Office, 10,000 copies of the commemorative stamp have been printed. Each stamp costs PHP 16. Another set featuring the Philippine flag and mascots Koolog, Kid Lat, and Hataw has also been produced. Leylah Fernandez dispatches Romanian foe to open Monterrey run
Canadian Leylah Fernandez dispatched Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, 6-3, 7-5, to open her campaign at the 2025 Monterrey Open in Mexico. Fernandez is coming off back-to-back early exits in Montreal and Cincinnati, where she lost in the first and second rounds, respectively. Just this July, Fernandez bagged the Washington Open title after defeating Anna Kalinskaya in the finals. Fernandez, who has Filipino roots through her mother's side of the family, won the Monterrey Open in 2021 and 2022. The incoming Emilio Aguinaldo College rookie guard finds himself training alongside Steph Curry in China, giving him an extraordinary chance to learn from one of the greatest shooters of all time. The 19-year-old Castillo, a two-time Mythical Five member in the NCAA junior ranks, was among the select few invited to the Curry Camp 2025 in Chongqing, China, joining fellow young Filipino hooper Koji Buenaflor of the University of Santo Tomas in the four-day program. Castillo's participation in the camp is expected to further hone his skills ahead of NCAA Season 101, where the Generals are already seen as early contenders following their strong preseason form.
