Alabama State Superintendent releases statement regarding ICE and federal funding

Yahoo30-01-2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey released a statement Thursday regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement and federal funding.
Protests supporting immigrant community underway in Albertville
His statement reads as the following:
Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Many local education leaders have inquired about how possible actions to locate and detain certain illegal alien individuals might affect Alabama schools. First and foremost, to our knowledge, none of our schools have experienced any disruptions whatsoever on the part of federal or state law enforcement related to this issue. We (ALSDE) remain in constant contact with law enforcement agencies and will notify local superintendents should any new guidance or directives be issued by law enforcement.
For now, schools should carry on with normal activities.
Parents should be encouraged to send children to school, ever mindful of the importance of school attendance on academic and social development.
Schools should follow enrollment and attendance policies currently in place, as nothing has changed.
As always, If anyone shows up to your office or a school, purporting to be a law enforcement agent, verify identity before admitting them to campus. Nevertheless, after verifying identity, badged law enforcement should always be welcomed onto our campuses. (There is some concern, albeit pure speculation, about potential mal-actors taking advantage of the confusion to attempt kidnapping or other unlawful entry)
Please communicate the importance of being at school to all students and families.
Drawdown of Federal Funds
At this time, we do not believe yesterday's memorandum from the Office of Management and Budget affects formula-driven programs like Title I and IDEA. We are working closely with other state and federal agencies to secure any funds necessary to continue normal daily operations without interruption. Some discretionary grant funds will be affected.
In short, just keep having school. Let's stay focused on teaching and learning. I assure you that we are staying on top of the situation and will pass along information as we get updates. I know the flurry of activity makes some of our educators uneasy, which is natural because we all like consistency. Nevertheless, we must keep our eye on the ball and focus on teaching and learning.
Dr. Eric Mackey

Some LA migrant protests fueled by taxpayer-funded group with Dem ties — another with CCP link

One of the groups leading anti-immigration protests in Los Angeles is a taxpayer-funded activist organization with ties to the Democratic Party, while another has links to the Chinese Communist Party. The Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) — which received tens of millions of dollars in government grants during the Biden administration — staged a rally last week to denounce Immigration and Customs Enforcement arresting illegal migrants across the city, including those convicted of heinous crimes. 7 CHIRLA staged a rally last week to denounce Immigration and Customs Enforcement arresting illegal migrants across the city. According to financial records obtained by DataRepublican, CHIRLA received nearly $34 million in government grants, mostly from the state of California, in the fiscal year ending June 2023, a jump from the $12 million it received the previous year. 7 Protests against ICE escalated since then, with more than 1,000 rioters taking to the streets. REUTERS Advertisement The radical group also received around $450,000 in grants for 'citizenship education and training' between October 2021 and September 2024 from the DHS — the very agency the group was protesting last week. The federal agency cut ties with the group and terminated any further funding in March, including clawing back nearly $101,000 in funding that had yet to be paid out. A CHIRLA spokesman denied that the group had anything to do with the violence in a statement to The Post on Sunday. 7 CHIRLA received nearly $34 million in government grants, mostly from the state of California, in the fiscal year ending June 2023. He said CHIRLA 'organized a press event on Thursday' to protest the round-ups and had 'been sending legal observers to immigration courts and detention centers on Friday, Saturday and today as part of the LA Rapid Response Network. 'We have not participated, coordinated, or been part of the protests being registered in Los Angeles other than the press conference and rally cited above,' the rep said. REUTERS Another group that was behind some of last week's protests is the Marxist Party for Socialism and Liberation, which played a part in virulent past anti-Israel campus protests at Columbia University and which was once associated with suspected DC terrorist Elias Rodriguez. PSL has ties to the Chinese Communist Party through funding from socialist billionaire Neville Singham and his wife, Jodie Evans, founder of activist group Code Pink, according to a 2024 report by the Network Contagion Research Institute. The PSL did not immediately respond to a Post request for comment Sunday. Trump Blasts LA Protests in Late-Night Truth Social Rant

President Donald Trump slammed protesters in Los Angeles challenging the administration's roundup of immigrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Violence erupted Friday afternoon when police arrested dozens of protesters outside a federal building in downtown Los Angeles, where immigrants had been detained following ICE raids across the city earlier in the day. The Trump administration dispatched an estimated 2,000 National Guard personnel to quell the ongoing demonstrations. 'Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes, and unrest,' the president wrote in the early-morning hours Sunday morning. Trump baselessly claimed that the 'Radical Left protests' had been carried out by 'paid troublemakers,' saying the unrest 'will NOT BE TOLERATED.' The president also took aim on Sunday at California Democrats Governor Gavin Newsom, whom Trump has called 'Newscum,' and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for being 'unable to to [sic] handle the task' of keeping the peace in the city. His comments echo earlier remarks by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who on Saturday firmly laid the blame for the ongoing unrest at the Democratic Party's feet. Noem has earned the nickname 'ICE Barbie' for dolling up for ICE raids and taking photos in front of detained migrants, among other publicity stunts. 'What do we do when we have guys like Hakeem Jeffries standing up in front of the world and saying it's ok to write 'Kill ICE', it's ok to throw things at law enforcement officers? It's not ok, not in America,' Noem said in an interview with Fox News. It follows after Jeffries publicly called for the ICE agents who 'physically accosted' Democratic representatives outside a detention center in Newark last month to be identified and held to account over the incident. Trump also railed against the use of face masks to shield from identification. 'From now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests,' Trump posted, although presumably in reference to demonstrators rather than the ICE and Department of Homeland Security agents who routinely do so in order to conceal their faces from the public. 'What do these people have to hide, and why???' Trump raged.
