Prithvi Shaw starts life post Mumbai exit with Maharashtra debut at Buchi Babu Invitational
Ruturaj Gaikwad is also named in the squad, with the tournament marking the first time he plays any top-level cricket since suffering an elbow injury that had ruled him out halfway through the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It had resulted in MS Dhoni making a comeback into the role of Chennai Super Kings captain for the remainder of the season.
However, Gaikwad and wicketkeeper Saurabh Nawale are expected to exit the squad after the first match, having been selected to play for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy. West Zone have received direct entry into the semi-finals and will play their first game on September 4.
Shaw had been granted a no-objection certificate from Mumbai to change teams in June. 'At this stage of my career, I believe joining the Maharashtra team will help me grow further as a cricketer,' Shaw said in a statement. 'I am deeply grateful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for the opportunities and support I have received over the years.'
Maharashtra Cricket president Rohit Pawar said Shaw's international and IPL experience would be valuable and the team would stand 'firmly behind Prithvi in his new journey' for the seasons ahead.
Widely rated as one of the most exciting young talents in the world during his teenage years, Shaw's international career petered out after five Tests, six ODIs and a T20I, with his last match for India coming in July 2021. He remained prolific in the domestic scene for a couple of years after that as well before his sharp decline last season.
Shaw has 4556 runs in 58 first-class appearances at 46.02, scoring 13 centuries and 18 half-centuries with a highesgt score of 379. In List-A games, he has 3399 runs at 55.72 and a strike-rate of 125.74. In T20s, his 2902 runs have come at a strike-rate of 151.54 and average of 25.01. He was unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Shaw was captain of the Indian team that won the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, with current Test captain Shubman Gill being the player of the tournament.

Salah and Chiesa strike late as Liverpool win 4-2 thriller over Bournemouth
Liverpool: Liverpool star Mo Salah and substitute Federico Chiesa scored late goals as the Premier League champions kicked off their title defence with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bournemouth on the opening night of the season at Anfield on Friday. On an emotional and bittersweet evening following the death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in July, newcomer Hugo Ekitike marked his league debut with a goal in the 37th minute to give the hosts the lead, with Cody Gakpo adding a second just four minutes into the second half. However, Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo, who was subjected to racist abuse in the first half - prompting a pause in the match - pulled one back in the 64th minute and then netted again 12 minutes later to stun Liverpool and silence the Anfield crowd. But substitute Federico Chiesa restored the home side's advantage in the 88th minute, firing home after goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic parried a ball into the box from Mo Salah, who then scored himself deep into added time to seal the victory and secure all three points. With Liverpool back in front, Salah broke past the defence, cut inside, and drilled a shot into the bottom corner in the 94th minute - a goal that moved the Egyptian level with Andy Cole in fourth place on the all-time Premier League scorers' list with 187 goals. Earlier, the match was paused for several minutes after Bournemouth's Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo reported being subjected to racist abuse. "It's totally unacceptable," Bournemouth captain Adam Smith said. "Kind of in shock to be honest that it happened. In this day and age it shouldn't be happening. "I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals... Something has to be done. We'll support him in there and hopefully he'll be ok."

Late Salah, Chiesa goals give Liverpool 4-2 win over Bournemouth in thrilling Premier League opener
Liverpool talisman Mo Salah and substitute Federico Chiesa struck late goals as the Premier League champions began the defence of their title by beating Bournemouth 4-2 in a thriller on the opening night of the season at Anfield on Friday (August 15, 2025). On a bittersweet evening charged with emotion after the July death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, newcomer Hugo Ekitike bagged a goal on his league debut to put the hosts ahead after 37 minutes and Cody Gakpo doubled the lead in the 49th. But Antoine Semenyo, who was the target of racist abuse in the first half that led to a pause in the game, pulled one back for the visitors in the 64th minute and completed a double 12 minutes later to rock Liverpool and shock the home fans. However, Chiesa came off the bench and sent the Anfield faithful away happy with an 88th-minute strike after goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic swatted away a ball into the box by Salah, who scored himself deep into added time to wrap up the three points. "Fantastic," Liverpool boss Arne Slot said of Italian forward Chiesa's goal. "He came in in the end because we needed a goal. For him then to score in such a moment is special. "It's even more special because the fans have supported him. It's nice he gives them something in return with a great goal." With Liverpool ahead again, Salah chased the ball past the defence before cutting inside and firing into the bottom corner with a 94th-minute goal that put the Egyptian joint-fourth with Andy Cole on the all-time Premier League scorers' list with 187. An emotional Salah pointed to the heavens and flapped two hands to mimic Jota's shark goal celebration. He headed for The Kop stand after the final whistle, and wiped away tears while applauding the fans who were singing their Jota song to the tune of "Bad Moon Rising." Jota tribute The night started with an emotional minute's silence for Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash. Fans fought back tears as they sang "You'll Never Walk Alone." Ekitike, who has joined from Eintracht Frankfurt, was the most impressive of Slot's close-season signings in a spending spree topping 300 million pounds ($406.53 million). "Obviously I think it was a good performance, I could do better," said the French forward -- who held up two fingers in one hand, and made a zero with the other in a tribute to Liverpool's Jota, who wore number 20 -- after his goal. "But the most important thing was winning, the mentality we showed. Obviously we wanted to win tonight for the people who came and for Diogo," added the 23-year-old forward. Racist abuse The game was halted for several minutes after Bournemouth's Ghana international Semenyo reported the racist abuse. "It's totally unacceptable," Bournemouth captain Adam Smith said. "Kind of in shock to be honest that it happened. In this day and age it shouldn't be happening. "I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals ... Something has to be done. We'll support him in there and hopefully he'll be ok."

Ishan Kishan's talent remains largely untapped due to limited opportunities for India in the last one and a half years. Rishabh Pant, a fairly strong contender in recent years with 1,209 T20I runs at an average of 23.25, is out due to a foot injury sustained in the Manchester Test against England, narrowing the wicketkeeping options the squad announcement imminent, selectors face a dilemma: back Samson's explosive firepower or trust the versatility and promise of the others?Sanju Samson's stop-start 2025Samson's recent months have been clouded by fitness concerns and a noticeable dip in batting form - prompting serious questions ahead of national selection for the upcoming tours. Is he still the dependable option India needs? In IPL 2025, he managed just one fifty, scoring 285 runs from nine matches, as Rajasthan Royals failed to reach the playoffs. Has the pressure of leadership or form slump taken a toll? Injuries further disrupted his season, including a finger fracture that required surgery and limited his early appearances, followed by a side strain that forced him to retire hurt (31 off 19) against the Delhi Capitals and miss crucial games. Samson hasn't had the best of times in 2025 (Courtesy: PTI) Yet, can one look past his brilliance in South Africa late last year? Samson's explosive 107 off 50 balls in Durban, laced with 7 fours and 10 sixes, at a blistering strike rate of 214, not only powered India to a memorable win but also reinforced what he's capable of at his best. Could that innings be enough to tip the scales in his favour, despite recent struggles?Jitesh Sharma raising the barJitesh Sharma's international numbers for India remain modest, with an average of just 14.28 from nine T20I matches, scoring 100 runs with a highest score of 35. On paper, these figures hardly make him an automatic pick. But could his recent form in the IPL 2025 change that perception?advertisementIn a high-stakes match against Lucknow Super Giants, Sharma smashed an unbeaten 85 off 33 balls, helping Royal Challengers Bangalore chase 228 successfully. With a strike rate of over 257, this was one of the most impactful innings of the season. Does this show he can handle pressure on big occasions? Jitesh's exploits with RCB in IPL 2025 make him a strong contender (Courtesy: PTI) With the Asia Cup 2025 just weeks away, questions abound: Can Sharma replicate his IPL heroics on the international stage? Will the selectors take this recent performance as a sign that he deserves a place in the squad? Could he become India's X-factor in the tournament?Ishan Kishan or Dhruv Jurel? If India had to choose between Ishan Kishan and Dhruv Jurel for a T20I spot, the decision hinges on current form and recent last played for India in a T20I series against Australia in November 2023, scoring two half-centuries and a duck. However, his absence from domestic cricket led to the loss of his central contract in 2024, highlighting concerns over his commitment. Despite this, he regained a Grade C contract in April 2025. On the other hand, Jurel has played four T20Is, scoring only 12 runs at an average of 4.00. While his IPL performances have been more promising, his international T20I record raises questions about his readiness for the national team. Kishan last played for India in 2023 (Courtesy: PTI) Should India prioritise experience or current form? Is commitment to domestic cricket a decisive factor in selection? Can Jurel's IPL performances translate into international success? The Asia Cup is around the corner, and India's wicketkeeping puzzle is as tense as any thriller. Samson shines with three T20I centuries, but others are hungry for their moment in the form, and temperament all matter in a race that could shape India's title defence. Every choice carries hope, pressure, and dreams of glory—leaving fans eagerly wondering which player the selectors will eventually entrust.- Ends
