Riyadh: King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) successfully performed 10 kidney exchange transplants over two consecutive days, setting a global record for the highest number of such procedures conducted within a two-day span at a single center, coinciding with World Organ Donation Day on August 13. This milestone reinforces KFSHRC's position as a global leader in organ transplantation. This accomplishment reflects the hospital's high clinical readiness, the seamless coordination of its multidisciplinary medical teams, and its advanced systems for managing donor-recipient matching, alongside its extensive experience in executing complex transplant procedures. All of these factors enable KFSHRC to carry out this type of exchange transplantation with precision and within an exceptionally short timeframe. Paired kidney transplantation is an innovative approach that matches donor–patient pairs for mutual exchange. In this system, each donor gives a kidney to a patient with whom they have no direct relation, while their own relative receives a kidney from another donor. The process significantly improves compatibility rates and offers new hope to patients who face challenges in finding a suitable match within their families. Last year, KFSHRC celebrated a major milestone by completing more than 500 paired kidney transplants since the program was launched in 2011. Yara Sameh Justin Timberlake has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. The singer opened up in a pair of Instagram Stories about his disease and the struggles he's faced while on his 'Forget Tomorrow World Tour". Fans recently noticed that Timberlake appeared sluggish and low-energy during the performances on the international leg of the trek, which he suggested was due to the nerve damage and fatigue he experienced from Lyme disease. 'I've been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme Disease–which I don't say so you feel bad for me – but to shed some light on what I've been up against behind the scenes,' he wrote. 'If you've experienced this disease or know someone who has- then you're aware: Living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.' The singer described his mindset when he first got diagnosed with Lyme disease, explaining that he contemplated stopping the tour but ultimately decided to continue for the love of performance. 'When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure,' Timberlake continued. 'But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness. I was faced with a personal decision. Stop touring? Or, keep going and figure it out. I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I'm so glad I kept going." 'Not only did I prove my mental tenacity to myself but, I now have so many special moments with all of you that I will never forget. I was reluctant to talk about this because I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself. But I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren't misinterpreted. Sharing all of this with the hope that we can all find a way to be more connected. I'd like to do my part to help others experiencing this disease too.' Timberlake wrapped his 'Forget Tomorrow World Tour' in Istanbul on July 30, more than a year after he set off the trek in Vancouver last April. When the early signs of illness appeared during the patient's first months of life, KFSHRC teams raced against time to stabilize her condition. She was diagnosed with a congenital deficiency in plasminogen, a protein essential for dissolving blood clots, resulting in fibrous deposits that posed serious threats to her tissues and organs. The complexity of her case posed both medical and quality-of-life challenges, requiring a comprehensive, multidisciplinary care system. This extended beyond medical treatment to include all facets of life-supporting care. Teams from nursing, nutrition, and information technology joined hematology and transplant specialists to ensure the young girl's well-being. In a reflection on the early days, the patient's father said: 'My daughter suffered from the moment she was born. She cried constantly and couldn't nurse. We lived in continuous worry with no clear answers until God opened a door of hope. Today, thanks to God first, and then to the remarkable healthcare capabilities provided by the Government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, may God preserve them, we witness our daughter's recovery from this rare disease after two decades of struggle.' Throughout the years of treatment, the patient relied on regular intravenous doses of plasminogen, along with eye drops to reduce the disease's effect on her vision. The annual cost of treatment exceeded 6 million SAR, fully covered by the Saudi government. This reflects the Kingdom's profound commitment to human health and its investment in quality of life even in the most complex medical cases. Dr. Hazzaa Al-Zahrani, Director of Adult Hematology and Stem Cell Transplant Division at KFSHRC Riyadh and the supervising physician, explained that managing the case required a precise and long-term approach to prevent complications and ensure stability. The decision to proceed with a liver transplant came after careful consideration as an extraordinary therapeutic option for an exceptionally rare case. The success of the procedure marked a turning point in her medical journey and a beacon of hope for patients facing similar conditions worldwide.
