Putra Heights fire: Rental assistance extended until next year
State Housing and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said the decision to continue the RM2,000 monthly rental assistance was made to ensure that victims have appropriate shelter until their homes are repaired.
'Initially, the state government agreed to provide rental support for six months, but we have decided to extend it for up to a year or more, especially for homes that were completely destroyed, as rebuilding will take time,' he said.
'For houses that were partially damaged, assistance will also continue until repairs are fully completed. The aid will only be discontinued once the occupants are able to return to their homes,' he said in a statement today.
He added that the Selangor government will monitor the repair progress of each affected home to ensure that assistance is distributed efficiently under the allocated funding.
On April 30, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced that the Selangor government had allocated RM2.73 million in rental assistance for 455 families affected by the incident, covering six months from April onwards.
The Petronas gas pipeline fire, which occurred in Putra Heights at 8.10 am on April 1, sent flames soaring over 30 metres high, with temperatures reaching up to 1,000 degrees Celsius. The blaze took nearly eight hours to extinguish and left a 9.8-metre-deep crater at the site.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has assured that genuinely eligible B40 households will not be affected by the ongoing People's Housing Programme whitening exercise carried out by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the MADANI government inherited a big challenge in ensuring that PPR facilities truly reach those who are in need. She said that with rental rates as low as RM124 per month, PPR homes are among the government's major subsidies to help B40 families live more comfortably in the capital city. The whitening process aims to ensure fairness in the allocation process. Zaliha stated she felt compelled to respond to the issue of PPR eviction notices that have caused public concern in recent days. For those affected and wishing to appeal, they can do so within 30 days. For tenants facing rental arrears, DBKL is ready to negotiate installment rates and schedules. Tenants only need to pledge to comply with the agreed schedule so that they can continue to stay in the PPR homes under the agreed-upon terms. Zaliha shared this information in a Facebook post today. DBKL has set clear eligibility conditions for tenants, including being a married Malaysian citizen couple. Tenants must have a household income not exceeding RM3,000 for low-cost and RM4,000 for medium-cost units. Tenants must also not own any property or land within 35 kilometres of the city centre. Additional requirements include holding the status of widow, widower, or single parent. Applicants must be living or working in Kuala Lumpur and be registered with DBKL. The whitening process conducted by DBKL is to enforce these conditions. Tenants were notified six months before the end of their lease, which is a standard review procedure carried out each time a rental contract expires. Out of the 3,379 tenants reviewed, 3,031 tenants or 89.7 per cent remain eligible and can continue renting. Some 348 tenants or 10.3 per cent failed to have their leases renewed due to violations. Violations included high rental arrears and household income exceeding eligibility limits. Other violations involved owning property within 35 km of Kuala Lumpur and non-citizen status of spouses. Some tenants were found not residing in the PPR unit. Current arrears for PPR and DBKL public housing have reached up to RM70 million. This long-standing issue must be boldly addressed to ensure public housing initiatives are fair. The government wants to ensure these initiatives truly assist those in need. Vacant units resulting from the whitening exercise will be reassigned to applicants with the greatest need. - Bernama

Former teacher pleads not guilty to false statement charge
SHAH ALAM: A former private teacher has pleaded not guilty to charges of transmitting false statements about the Prime Minister. S. Chandrasegaran, 46, entered his plea at the Sessions Court here today. The charge relates to allegedly using TikTok to knowingly transmit false statements intended to disparage an individual. The transmission occurred at 1.36 pm on December 30, 2024. It was later viewed at a Bandar Sunway restaurant at 6.30 pm that same day. He faces charges under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If convicted, he could face a fine up to RM50,000 or one year imprisonment or both. An additional daily fine of RM1,000 may apply if the offence continues after conviction. The prosecution requested bail of RM30,000 with additional conditions. Conditions included monthly police station reporting and passport surrender. The accused was also to be prohibited from interfering with prosecution witnesses. Defense lawyer Muhammad Nor Tamrin requested reasonable bail for his client. He noted the accused currently has no regular income due to permanent disability. The accused is also suffering from throat cancer. He must support a wife and two children. The lawyer stated there was no risk of absconding. Judge Norazlin Othman allowed bail at RM7,000 with a local guarantor. She approved the additional conditions proposed by the prosecution. Case mention has been set for October 13. - Bernama

TikTok user charged with misusing network facilities
SHAH ALAM: A content creator has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of making a false statement about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. S. Chandrasegaran, a former private school teacher, was charged before judge Norazlin Othman, of making the false statement on his TikTok account on Dec 30, 2024. The 46-year-old, who is popularly known as Cikgu Chandra, was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act, which is punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act, for misuse of network facilities. The father of two had made the statement on his "cikguchandra3" TikTok account. If found guilty, Chandrasegaran can be fined not more than RM50,000, or jailed up to one year and fined an additional RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction. DPP Nurul Sofea Jaysal suggested a bail amount of RM30,000, with an additional condition of having to report to the nearest police station, surrender his passport to the court and not bother the prosecution witnesses. Chandrasegaran's counsel Muhammad Nor Tamrin asked for a lower bail amount, saying his client was no longer employed after being declared disabled and suffers from throat cancer. The court fixed bail at RM7,000 with one surety and allowed the additional conditions requested by the prosecution. Norazlin fixed Oct 13 for next mention.
