Malaysia's digital investment pipeline hits RM59.1b, boosting AI and tech growth, says minister
KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Malaysia has a digital investment pipeline of RM59.1 billion as of April 2025, according to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
He said that the projected information technology (IT) load for this pipeline exceeds 300 megawatts (MW).
'From 2021 to 2024, approved investments in data centres and cloud computing alone total RM113.8 billion, with 23 landmark projects proposing nearly 1,900 MW in IT load,' he said in his opening remarks at the Microsoft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tour 2025, here today.
Tengku Zafrul said the impact of Microsoft's investments, along with other strategic digital projects, has propelled Malaysia into the upper echelons of regional digital competitiveness.
'Malaysia's AI ecosystem is vibrant, we have over 140 local AI solution providers in the Malaysia Digital framework, delivering real-world applications in healthcare, agriculture, cities, and manufacturing.
'Our policy ecosystem also supports this momentum. The government has introduced the Digital Ecosystem Acceleration (Desac) incentive to attract high-quality, sustainable digital infrastructure,' he said.
He noted that Microsoft's commitment is pivotal, as evidenced by initiatives such as Project Big Blue in Johor and Project Baby Blue in Cyberjaya, as well as the US$1 billion Bersama Malaysia Initiative and the recent US$2.2 billion GoSEA announcement (US$1=RM4.23).
These are investments in Malaysia's future, people, and status as a regional AI and digital hub, said Tengku Zafrul.
In 2024, Malaysia approved a record RM133.3 billion in new digital investments, bringing the total approved during the 2021-2024 period to RM278 billion across 23 major projects, anchored by advanced data centres and cloud infrastructure, creating nearly 88,000 new jobs and establishing Malaysia as a digital leader in Asean.
'Malaysia's digital economy is projected to contribute 25.5 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) this year, with national GDP growth forecast between 4.5 per cent and 5.5 per cent.
'Our ambitions are tightly linked to our role as Asean chair in 2025, where we are championing the theme: 'Advancing for a Resilient, Inclusive, and Sustainable Asean,'' he added. — Bernama

Former KL Tower concessionaire loses injunction appeal
The injunction application had been filed by Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd, the former concessionaires of the KL Tower. PUTRAJAYA : The former operator of the Kuala Lumpur Tower has failed to obtain an injunction to stop the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd. A three-member bench of the Court of Appeal dismissed the application by Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd. Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who delivered the court's unanimous decision, said the applicants failed to meet the legal threshold for the grant of an ad interim injunction. There was no status quo to maintain as the fifth supplementary agreement on the concession had lapsed on March 31, he said. Sequerah ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay costs totalling RM30,000. The companies had appealed against a High Court decision in April, dismissing the application for the ad interim injunction. Hydroshoppe and Menara KL had sued the government for breach of contract, claiming that the LSH group had induced a breach of contract with the government. They asked the court to declare the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master as void and unlawful. They also sought an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession to be transferred back to them. The High Court will hear the companies' applications for two other injunctions on June 9.

Umno warns PKR: Hands off Tengku Zafrul
Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said members of the unity government coalition should prevent causing disharmony among coalition partners. PETALING JAYA : Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has issued a warning to PKR against accepting Tengku Zafrul Aziz into the party. Asyraf said Umno has yet to receive Tengku Zafrul's letter of resignation, and said the party viewed his intention to join PKR seriously. 'It is very inappropriate for any party in the unity government to accept members from other allied parties arbitrarily,' said Asyraf in a statement this evening. 'This is to prevent causing disharmony among the parties in the unity government, which could lead to continuous prejudice and suspicion among grassroots members about the level of loyalty, sincerity, and honesty shared among us,' he said. Tengku Zafrul announced this evening that he had resigned as an Umno member and would be applying to join PKR, citing 'compatibility and suitability'. He was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and head of the Kota Raja Umno division. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said Tengku Zafrul's departure was 'great news' for Umno, and cynically challenged PKR to accept the senator as a member to prove its 'loyalty' in its friendship with Umno. He also challenged Tengku Zafrul to resign from his Cabinet post as minister of investment, trade and industry.

‘Opportunist' Tengku Zafrul will be a PKR liability, says Puad
One of Umno's biggest mistakes was 'spoiling' Tengku Zafrul Aziz and giving him the red carpet treatment, according to Puad Zarkashi (left). PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi trained his guns at Tengku Zafrul Aziz for quitting the party, saying that the federal minister will become a liability for PKR. Describing Tengku Zafrul as an opportunist, Puad said that if PKR accepted the former into its fold, it would be 'a stab in the back for Umno'. Puad's remarks came shortly after Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno member, as well as from all party posts, with plans to join PKR. Puad told FMT: 'Umno shouldn't mourn his departure. Let him go. He's simply trying to fill the void left by (former PKR deputy president) Rafizi Ramli. I believe Tengku Zafrul will become a liability to PKR.' Rafizi, who was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar in the contest for the deputy presidency at the recent party polls, resigned as economy minister on Wednesday. Tengku Zafrul's decision confirms rumours in February that he would leave Umno and join PKR before his term as a senator expires at the year's end. Tengku Zafrul said he had conveyed his intention to join PKR to party president Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the prime minister. He also said he would go through the usual procedure to apply to be a PKR member. Puad, who is Rengit assemblyman, said one of Umno's biggest mistakes was 'spoiling' Tengku Zafrul too much by giving him the red carpet treatment. 'He was made an election candidate, a division chief, a Supreme Council member, and appointed as investment, trade and industry minister. 'It should never be repeated. Umno must stop bringing in individuals with no roots or commitment to the party. Tengku Zafrul never had any real loyalty to Umno,' Puad said. Tengku Zafrul was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and also headed the Kota Raja Umno division. He had contested the Kuala Selangor seat during the 2022 general election but lost to Amanah's Dzulkefly Ahmad by 1,002 votes in a four-cornered contest. In December last year, there were rumours that he was planning to join PKR in an apparent bid to become the next Selangor menteri besar. He later denied being in talks over state-level positions. But speculation was further fuelled after Anwar confirmed that talks were under way for Tengku Zafrul to join the party. Puad today said Tengku Zafrul should have been expelled earlier, when news of his plans to join PKR made headlines. 'He even hadn't been attending Supreme Council meetings for some time.'
