Red Sox pitcher Hunter Dobbins backs controversial Yankees quip with ‘fun' admission
The post Red Sox pitcher Hunter Dobbins backs controversial Yankees quip with 'fun' admission appeared first on ClutchPoints.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Hunter Dobbins hates the New York Yankees. A lot.
But he's welcoming the criticism from Yankees fans for saying he'd rather retire than wear pinstripes. The quote got plenty of run this weekend as the two bitter rivals played for the first time in 2025 — particularly on Sunday when Dobbins took the mound.

'I mean, you can't really say something like that and not expect a passionate fan base like the Yankees to say something,' Dobbins said, via MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. 'If anything, it made the rivalry atmosphere feel a lot more fun. I enjoyed it a lot.'
Yankees captain Aaron Judge addressed Dobbins' comments, saying, 'I've only heard Ken Griffey Jr. say that, so I was a little surprised.'
For those too young to remember, Griffey famously did not get along with then-Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Dobbins, for his part, grew up the son of a Red Sox fan, so hating the Yankees is simply in his blood.

The Yankees got to Dobbins to the tune of two home runs on Sunday, but the Red Sox had the last laugh, winning 11-7 to take two out of three in the Bronx. They scored 21 total runs in the final two games, both Red Sox wins.

'They had their hitting shoes on,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'They beat us here this weekend.'
Boston catcher Carlos Narvaez, the former Yankee who hit a crucial three-run home run in the series finale, called the series win 'huge' as the Red Sox look to fight their way back to .500.
'Everybody sees what we've been through the last couple of weeks, battling, going through tough moments,' he said, per MLB.com's Ian Browne. 'This series was huge for us. Every time we play against the Yankees, it's something special.'
Now at 32-35, the Red Sox are still four games out of the Wild Card and 8.5 behind the Yankees in the American League East. But now they have momentum — and a chance to beat the Yankees again next weekend at Fenway Park.

Broncos Urged to Pursue Blockbuster Trade To Support Bo Nix
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Denver Broncos were one of the best surprises in the NFL during the 2024 season. Led by rookie quarterback Bo Nix, the team made a run to the playoffs. While the Broncos were eliminated by the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round by a final score of 31-7, the season was a major success. That run helped lead to higher expectations for the upcoming 2025 season. Looking ahead to the upcoming campaign, there are many reasons to be excited about Denver. Could the team consider making an aggressive move to increase their chances of contention even more? Photo byThat is exactly what has been suggested for the Broncos. A bold trade for a star wide receiver has been brought up as a possible option. Read more: Steelers See Tom Brady Comparison With Aaron Rodgers Fox Sports has suggested Denver as a potential trade destination for Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. "McLaurin would be a welcome addition to Denver's receiving room and help alleviate the reliance that the franchise has put on its young receivers to all pan out. A scenario exists where Nix could have a sluggish Year 2 after putting a lot of impressive plays on film in Year 1 (e.g., Dak Prescott in 2017 and C.J. Stroud in 2024)," they wrote. "If that indeed takes place, having an improved pass-catching core around Nix can help offset that potential downtick in production. With McLaurin, one knows exactly what they're getting: a steady and durable downfield weapon who can shoulder the bulk of secondaries' attention." McLaurin is coming off of a 2024 season with the Commanders that saw him catch 82 passes for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. What would this kind of move mean for Nix and the Broncos? Quite simply, the offense would have a chance to be elite. Currently, Denver has Courtland Sutton penciled in as its No. 1 wide receiver option. A duo of McLaurin and Sutton would be very difficult for opposing defenses to slow down. Behind those two players, the Broncos would have Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, and Devaughn Vele. Read more: Browns Fans in Tears After Nick Chubb's Heartfelt Message Giving a young quarterback as much support as a team can is always wise business. Nix showed signs of superstar potential as a rookie. Adding McLaurin to the mix would help him put up even bigger production in year two. As a rookie, Nix completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also ran for 430 yards and four more touchdowns. This is just an idea at this point, but McLaurin would be a perfect target to help take Nix to the next level. For more Denver Broncos and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

White Sox Trade Vaughn For Civale, A Potential Trade Piece
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - MAY 27: Aaron Civale #32 of the Milwaukee Brewers throws a pitch in the first ... More inning against the Boston Red Sox at American Family Field on May 27, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by) The Emma Lazarus sonnet commissioned for the Statue of Liberty speaks to the White Sox. Aaron Civale, who was the third highest paid Brewer with an $8 million salary, isn't poor but he certainly seemed tired earlier this week, when Pat Murphy moved him from the starting rotation to the bullpen. His reaction was to become a member of the 'huddled masses yearning to breathe free.' The 30-year-old Civale asked the Brewers to trade him, and the White Sox are more than happy to have him. They add his upside while sending recently demoted first baseman Andrew Vaughn to Milwaukee. General Manager Chris Getz is acquiring Civale not so much because he believes the veteran starter will make a difference this season but because he hopes he'll pitch so well the next six weeks the White Sox will be able to swap him for a prospect or two before the July 31 deadline. It's a cash neutral move for a rebuilding team that opened the season with a $74.1 million payrolll. The acquisition of Civale was first reported by the New York Post's Jon Heyman, with ESPN's Jesse Rogers adding the Vaughn piece and Adam McCalvy reporting the deal also includes cash from the Brewers to the White Sox, adjusting for the difference in salaries between Civale and Vaughn. Civale, acquired by the Brewers from Tampa Bay last July, was squeezed out of the rotation for the Wild Card series against the Mets but threw three strong innings in relief. He entered the season as Milwaukee's No. 3 starter but left a March 30 start with a strained left hamstring. He compiled a 3.32 ERA in four starts since returning on May 22 but lost his spot to top prospect Jacob Misiorowski. Rookie manager Will Venable's White Sox rotation is missing Martin Perez, who could miss the rest of the season with elbow issues, and second-year starter Jonathan Cannon, who has been on the Injured List since June 2 with a strained back. Getz previously made a smart in-season move by adding 32-year-old right-hander Adrian Houser five days after he was released by Texas. The Rangers had signed Houser to a minor-league contract but weren't happy with his work at Triple-A Round Rock (5.03 ERA in 39 1/3 innings). He's had instant success in Chicago, going 2-1 with a 1.48 ERA in four starts. He's doing it with increased velocity on his fastball and new bite on his curveball, not mirrors or a trick pitch. Civale seemingly presents at least as much potential for pitching coach Ethan Katz and Venable to develop. He threw a career-high 161 innings between Tampa Bay and Milwaukee in 2024, going 8-9 with a 4.36 ERA. He limits hard contract with a low-90s fastball and the ability to move the ball around with an oversized selection of secondary pitches, including a cutter that has been his trademark pitch. Contenders like the Cubs, Dodgers, Mets, Braves, Tigers and Astros are expected to target starting pitching in the July trade markets. There's such a shortage across the majors - not to mention a limited number of teams willing to trade pitching — that Getz could receive a solid return if Civale and Houser present as reliable veterans capable of eating innings in August and September. Vaughn, the third overall player selected in the 2019 draft, was hitting .189 when he was sent to Triple-A Charlotte last month. The White Sox viewed him as a long-term replacement for first baseman Jose Abreu but he produced a .243/.294/.401 slash line in 349 games the last three seasons, when he produced at essentially replacement level. Vaughn is earning $5.85 million as a four-plus arbitration player this season. The Sox were almost certain to non-tender him after the season. Credit Getz for capturing some value for him. Civale's work the next six weeks will likely determine how much value Vaughn returns.
