Lewis Hamilton Signed Off on Brad Pitt and Damson Idris' Driving in ‘F1: The Movie'

F1: The Movie sped into Times Square on Monday night, marking the world premiere of the Formula 1 racing drama starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris.
The film, directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, follows Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a retired F1 driver who comes out of retirement to mentor a hotshot rookie (Idris). In trying to make the movie as realistic as possible, the two stars did much of their own driving; Pitt told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere that in getting behind the wheel for the first time, he was shocked 'that these cars can stick in high-speed corners. It's shocking how fast they can stop. I was just in awe.'

And being no stranger to on-camera stunts, Pitt pointed out that driving comes with 'adrenaline but also a strange calm in the car, it's amazing. You've got to be so present. When everything's working, there's an eerie calm to it. It's lovely.'
Idris added that for his first time in the car, his mindset was 'Don't die. It was the most exhilarating feeling in the world and doing it alongside Brad was just a dream come true. We trained like four months out of the year to really hone our craft in these vehicles — and we also did it while having to act and try to look cute and say your lines.'
The actor also promised, 'When you watch this movie, it's the most authentic racing movie of all time; I can't stress that enough. And that was the goal we set out for ourselves. So I'm so proud. I'm so happy that big movies are coming back.'
Kosinski admitted there was some behind-the-scenes work involved with getting the two stars behind the wheel — 'A lot of conversations with the insurance companies, for sure' — but it was made easier by the fact that 'Brad and Damson both proved themselves to be incredible drivers; very capable behind the wheel, they were signed off on by Lewis Hamilton himself. So as nerve-wrecking as it is to see them driving at this speed, I had faith in their ability and also the team we put around them.'
Hamilton, who has won seven world championships and is largely considered the face of F1, served as a producer on the project. And with parts of the movie filmed at real F1 races, Kosinski added, 'I really have to thank Formula 1 for letting us into their world and giving us the access to pull this off.'
F1: The Movie hits theaters June 27.

‘F1: The Movie' reviews: Brad Pitt burns rubber with ‘macho panache' in a high-octane thrill ride

"This is what blockbusters used to look like." Warner Bros. will release Joseph Kosinski's F1: The Movie on June 27 and critics are urging fans to race out and see Brad Pitt's charisma "consume the screen" in a "technical marvel of a movie" that gives audiences "a hell of a ride," according to IGN's Clint Gage. More from GoldDerby Could '28 Years Later' contend for Oscars? Here's the complete awards history of the '28' franchise. 'The Pitt' heads back into production, DC finds its Clayface, and more of today's top stories Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, Dolly Parton, and Wynn Thomas to receive honorary Oscars Filmed for Imax, F1: The Movie follows Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a former Formula 1 prodigy whose career was derailed by a track accident in the 1990s. Thirty years later, his ex-teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) convinces him to join Ruben's struggling F1 team for one last shot at glory. Sonny teams up with rookie sensation Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), but as the race for redemption heats up, Sonny must confront his past and navigate the intense rivalry where teammates often become fierce competitors. "This is what blockbusters used to look like," writes David Fear (Rolling Stone). "Come for the most impressive, lustrous car that a gajillion-dollar budget can buy. The reason to stay, however, is the driver. Tim Grierson (Screen International) says, "Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski does for cars what he previously did for fighter jets, transforming them into balletic machines that fly through the frame with unstoppable propulsion." Linda Marric (HeyUGuys) calls the movie "the very definition of a crowd pleaser," and adds, "F1: The Movie is a high-octane spectacle with heart, humour, and heroism. It'll dominate the summer blockbuster track with the same adrenaline, charisma, and pulse-pounding action that defines Formula One itself." Pitt is earning raves for his performance as well, as Brian Truitt (USA Today) writes, "Watching Pitt burn this much rubber, and with macho panache, puts F1 in the winner's circle." Michael Ordoña (San Francisco Chronicle) says, "Pitt's screen presence has aged like a leather jacket, scuffed in all the right places and cooler than ever." With a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 82 percent, F1 is not without criticism. Nicholas Barber ( notes, "While Top Gun: Maverick was a masterpiece that pulled viewers into events in and out of the cockpit, F1 is simply a competently assembled collection of underdog sports-drama clichés. It never convinces you that its protagonists are human beings." Clarisse Loughrey (Independent-UK) writes, "While director Joseph Kosinski and cinematographer Claudio Miranda can certainly shoot cars as well as they can planes, F1 represents the spiritually bone-dry, abrasive inverse to all of Maverick's giddy pleasures." From Apple Original Films, F1: The Movie is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Kosinski, seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Chad Oman. ‘F1: The Movie' Reviews: Does Brad Pitt Power Formula 1 Racing Thriller?

"F1: The Movie" partial poster featuring Kerry Condon, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem. Brad Pitt's F1: The Movie has gotten off to a roaring start with early reviews from critics. Rated PG-13, F1: The Movie isn't opening in theaters until June 27, but the review embargo for the Warner Bros. and Apple Original Films release was lifted following the film's New York City premiere on Monday night. The official summary for F1: The Movie reads, 'Dubbed 'the greatest that never was, Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was Formula 1's most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he's a nomadic racer-for-hire when he's approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling Formula 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. 'Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to Formula 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He'll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team's hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him and he finds that in Formula 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition — and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.' Directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, F1 The Movie also stars Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies and Kim Bodnia. Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. said that Formula 1 the Movie was filmed during 'actual Grand Prix weekends.' As of Tuesday, F1: The Movie has received an 83% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 54 reviews. RT's Critics Consensus, Popcornmeter score with verified user ratings and an audience summary are still pending. Sophie Butcher of Empire Magazine is among the top critics on RT who is giving F1: The Movie a 'fresh' rating on RT, writing, 'Joseph Kosinski has done it again. F1 combines unparalleled access, pioneering filmmaking and moving redemption arcs to deliver an exhilarating cinematic experience. What will he attach a camera to next?' Tim Grierson of Screen International echoes Butcher's sentiments, writing in his 'fresh' summary on RT, 'Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski does for cars what he previously did for fighter jets, transforming them into balletic machines that fly through the frame with unstoppable propulsion.' David Fear of Rolling Stone compliments Brad Pitt in his 'fresh' take of F1: The Movie on RT, writing, 'This what blockbusters used to look like. Come for the most impressive, lustrous car that a gajillion-dollar budget can buy. The reason to stay, however, is the driver.' Not as impressed with the film is Nicholas Barber of the BBC, who writes in his 'rotten' review summary on RT, 'While Top Gun: Maverick was a masterpiece that pulled viewers into events in and out of the cockpit, F1 is simply a competently assembled collection of underdog sports-drama clichés. It never convinces you that its protagonists are human beings.' Kevin Maher of The Times (UK) also gave the film a 'rotten' review on RT, writing, 'There's an unashamedly 'enthusiastic' cross-promotional quality to the film, like a two-and-a-half-hour Formula 1 commercial, that never quite gels with its hoary central story.' Clarisse Loughrey of the Independent (UK) was also underwhelmed by F1: The Movie, writing in her 'rotten' review summary on RT, 'While director Joseph Kosinski and cinematographer Claudio Miranda can certainly shoot cars as well as they can planes, F1 represents the spiritually bone-dry, abrasive inverse to all of Maverick's giddy pleasures.' F1: The Movie opens in theaters in wide release on June 27.

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle" remains one of the most beloved stoner comedies of all-time, following Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) as they attempt to go to White Castle despite numerous obstacles, including a maniacal Neil Patrick Harris as himself. Directed by Danny Leiner and co-written by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the movie was a box office success and inspired two sequels: "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" and "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas." "It's high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don't tell their kids." More Entertainment: 'Fantastic Four' Confirms Classic Villain Will Make MCU Debut There have been multiple attempts to revive the franchise in the past, with an attempted Adult Swim animated series in 2014 and both Cho and Penn often speaking about developing a fourth movie. "I think we all, thankfully, have the blessing of being really busy right now and want to find the right venue and the right timing."
