
Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah announce major partnership; reveals UAE's first cross-emirate hiking trail
The agreement, signed at Fujairah's International Conference on Adventure Tourism on April 30, took place in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah.
The partnership will connect the mountainous regions of both emirates, creating the UAE's first cross-emirate hiking trail.

This initiative aims to link Ras Al Khaimah 's peaks and adventure facilities with Fujairah's wadis and heritage paths.
'This collaboration isn't just about expanding our tourism offerings – it's about creating meaningful connections between landscapes, communities, and cultures in ways we've never seen before. By partnering with Fujairah Adventures, we are not only enriching adventure tourism in the UAE but also setting a precedent for cross-destination collaborations that celebrate diversity, champion sustainability, and inspire a new era of exploration across the region's most breathtaking terrains,' Brent Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer, RAKTDA said.
The partnership will create an integrated experience spanning mountains, wadis, coastal areas, and deserts whilst prioritising environmental conservation, cultural heritage, and community engagement.
Ras Al Khaimah features Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak, which hosts attractions including Jais Flight, Jais Sledder, Jais Sky Tour, and the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp. The emirate also offers a 97km hiking network and the 40km Jebel Jais Rim Trail.
Fujairah contributes the Fujairah Adventure Park and numerous trails, including the Altaybbah Historic Route, Seven Summits Hike, Ain Al Sheria Trail, Wadi Al Dahir Hike, Wadi Al Abadilah, Sal Khail Trail, and the Alaqqah Coastal Ridge.

The timing of this partnership corresponds with growth in the adventure tourism sector. From 2022 to 2025, adventure tourism has contributed significantly to the local economy, with projections estimating the sector will reach AED30 million by 2030.
Global travel trends indicate the adventure tourism segment is expected to grow at an annual rate of 10-15 per cent over the next five years. Market studies suggest that by 2030, the market could contribute up to 35 per cent of the Middle East's total tourism revenue.

UAE temperatures are set to hit highs of 48°C next week with more dusty weather expected to sweep in and heavy rain on the way in Al Ain. The National Centre of Meteorology forecasts the mercury will climb to 45°C in Abu Dhabi and 44°C in Dubai in its latest five-day bulletin, which runs from Sunday until Thursday. The NCM said temperatures will peak at 48°C in remote areas of the Abu Dhabi desert and will reach 47°C in the town of Sweihan in Al Ain. The Emirates has faced an unseasonably long summer this year, experiencing both its hottest April and May on record. The weather centre said heavy rain is expected on both Sunday and Monday, although temperatures will remain in the mid-40s. Videos shared by the NCM and Storm Centre, a social media channel that tracks the UAE's weather, in recent weeks have shown motorists navigating rain-lashed roads, downpours falling on the desert and leaden skies. The rainfall, particularly in the eastern parts of the UAE such as Al Ain, are caused by a low-pressure system from the south-east bringing moisture-laden air from the Arabian Sea, a meteorologist from the NCM told The National last month. Dusty conditions The NCM said more dusty conditions are expected as winds reach speeds of up to 40kph during the week. Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to be vigilant during both wet and dusty weather, which can greatly hamper visibility on the roads.

Ad agency's employees go MIA in new RAKTDA tourism summer campaign
After months of work with their advertising partner Impact BBDO Dubai, the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) were ready to shoot their new summer campaign, at various locations throughout the city. But when the stills production was scheduled to start, the only people who arrived were the RAKTDA marketing team. It would later come to light that the agency creatives were enjoying hiking, kayaking, relaxing spa days and soaking up the sun at the beaches and luxury hotel pools in Ras Al Khaimah, when they should've been doing their jobs. We reached out to Ali Rez, Impact BBDO Dubai's Chief Creative Officer, who responded with the following statement: 'I am currently out of the office, relaxing on some of the gorgeous beaches that Ras Al Khaimah has. A reply will therefore be delayed.' So, instead of cancelling the shoots and risking not meeting the media deadline, the tourism team decided to step up and take the shots themselves. Using their personal cameras, finance executive Marjorie Benito, R&D member Zoe Zuo, HR manager Sara Alzaabi, procurement manager Ian, IT expert Hari, and licensing executive Saeed went to various locations including the beach, a luxury hotel pool and the mountainside of Jebel Jais, and captured all the fun of RAK during summer. The results are the blurry, over-exposed and questionably-framed images of an unintentionally hilarious campaign aptly renamed 'RAK Summer. Unscripted.' And you can appreciate the amateur glory of all six images, on RAKTDA's social media, as OOH placed throughout the Dubai Mall and on numerous roadside billboards. 'This isn't your typical destination marketing campaign, because Ras Al Khaimah isn't your typical destination,' said Alka Winter, Vice President, Destination Marketing & Communications at RAKTDA. 'We wanted to do something creatively bold and refreshingly honest. RAK Summer Unscripted captures the spirit of the staycations we actually remember – the spontaneous ones that turn into stories. It's quirky, fun, and shows Ras Al Khaimah as a place you don't just visit but truly experience.' Things got even more interesting when it came to the making of their three, short-format films. Faced with absent directors and producers, and a looming deadline, RAKTDA had no other option but to reach out to visiting tourists and ask them to capture the various locations on camera. The wannabe cameramen and women obliged, using their phones to record each of the sites they visited. However, staying true to the spirit of the campaign, things did not go as planned. Look out for the series of dodgy launch films online and at a cinema near you. Just remember – there were average joes behind the camera, so laughing is discouraged. RAKTDA CEO Raki Phillips even moonlit as a voice talent in the radio spot, which is simply a voice note of him complaining about the copywriter not turning up at the studio recording. When asked about the tumultuous production, Raki Phillips had this to say 'We know that Ras Al Khaimak is packed with amazing places and fun activities that our visitors love to take the time to explore, but we had no idea that these so called 'professionals' would enjoy them so much, that they wouldn't turn up for work? The agency has a lot of explaining to do.' This journalist tried to get responses from the creatives in question, but very few could be gotten a hold of. Ghassan Kassabji, CEO of ImpactBBDO Dubai shared, 'We had a great time working on this campaign. Not every client is brave enough to turn the lens on the creative process itself and laugh along the way. RAKTDA gave us that freedom to let go, embrace the imperfections, and create something that truly mirrors the joy of an unscripted summer. That kind of trust is rare, and the result is a campaign that feels as spontaneous and unfiltered as the memories people actually make.' What sets RAKTDA's summer campaign apart is its embrace of the imperfect. Campaign visuals feature deliberately unpolished images paired with tongue-in-cheek captions. RAK Summer Unscripted also includes short film clips where mishaps range from bad selfies obscuring mountain views, to a couples' beach vlog where the phone tips over and there's no sign of the 'blue sky and beautiful water' mentioned on their excited and detailed commentary. The campaign is light-hearted, self-aware, and deeply relatable and its call to action says it all: 'Book your stay and let the story unfold — unscripted, unforgettable, and uniquely Ras Al Khaimah.' UAE: South African expats can now renew their passports at VFS Global
South African nationals residing in the UAE can now visit the VFS Global Visa Application Centre in Wafi City, Dubai, to renew their passports. Effective July 2025, VFS Global is the sole outsourced partner for the South Africa Department of Home Affairs in the UAE. Applicants no longer need to visit the Consulate General in Dubai to submit their passport renewal requests. They can now submit their applications at the VFS Global centre in Dubai or at the Embassy of South Africa in Abu Dhabi. Monaz Billimoria, Regional Head – UAE, VFS Global said, "We are excited to be offering passport renewal services for South African nationals living in the UAE. We thank the Department of Home Affairs for their steadfast faith in our services over the last 15 years that we have worked with them across the globe. We are confident that applicants will enjoy an enhanced customer experience when they visit us at the world's largest centre here in Dubai." How to apply? To apply for consular passport services, begin by visiting the VFS Global website, selecting 'Apply for Consular services → Passport,' and booking an appointment slot. Next, prepare all required documents according to the checklist provided online. On the scheduled date and time, visit the VFS Global centre to submit documents and complete biometric enrollment. The applicable fees must be paid at the centre during the appointment. After submission, you can track the progress of your application online using the application reference number. The passports are processed in South Africa and returned to the VFS Global office in Dubai. Applicants are urged to apply at least 12 months before their current passport expires and are advised against making firm travel plans until the new passport is in hand. The Department of Home Affairs advises a minimum of 8-to-10-week processing from the date the of submitting the application at the VFS Global centre. Applicants can also choose from a range of optional services for enhanced convenience, including the Premium Lounge services for professional form filling assistance, SMS/email status alerts throughout the process, and Prime Time for document submission outside of business hours. These services are completely optional and come at an extra charge. Choosing these services has no bearing on the timeline or outcome of the applications. Currently, VFS Global offers passport renewal services on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs through a network of eight centres in four countries and offers South Africa visa services through a network of 47 Visa Application Centres in 19 countries.
