Soccer-Auckland City's Club World Cup participation is a privilege with a price

The Star8 hours ago

MIAMI (Reuters) -Adam Mitchell knows he is going to lose money this month.
The Auckland City defender left his job selling houses in New Zealand to take part in the Club World Cup, where the eventual champions will pocket a staggering $125 million — while his semi-professional team plays on for pride and an appearance fee still under negotiation.
"My business runs on a commission basis only," Mitchell told Reuters on Thursday after his side's humbling 10-0 defeat to European giants Bayern Munich at the expanded Club World Cup.
"If I'm not back working, there's no income coming in. But a tournament like this, you have to be willing to make sacrifices and that's what a lot of us have done."
The Club World Cup's new, lucrative format has attracted criticism for its schedule congestion at the end of a long European season.
Mitchell and his teammates, many of whom work as teachers, delivery drivers, and tradesmen, are effectively paying out of their own pockets for the privilege of competing on this stage.
It is not just Mitchell's earnings that are taking a hit. New Zealand's labour laws typically grant around four to five weeks of annual leave per year — most of which, for Auckland's players, was already used up during last year's Oceania qualifying tournament.
"The players that went to the qualification for this tournament, well, we played in the Solomon Islands. That was three weeks," Mitchell explained.
"Some people have run out of annual leave. People are kind of in negative days and taking unpaid leave. So, it's nice for people to know the sacrifices we make to be here."
While the tournament offers prize money tiers based on performance, Auckland City, representing one of football's smallest confederations, will receive the lowest payout - a fraction of the $3.58 million meant for Oceania.
Even that amount, Mitchell noted, is still subject to ongoing negotiations between the club and New Zealand Football.
NO MERCY
On the pitch, the gulf between part-time semi-professionals and global superstars was on brutal display. Bayern Munich, ranked among the world's elite, named a starting 11 packed with internationals, showing no mercy en route to a double-digit victory.
'Conceding 10 goals isn't a nice feeling,' Mitchell admitted. "But I think we have to realise the calibre of team and calibre of players we were up against.
"The fact that they did put their strongest team out and they didn't take the pedal off the metal at all. They just kept going and going and going, which, it's not great for us, but in a way that's a sign of respect."
The heavy defeat has not dampened spirits within the Auckland camp. With two more games to play in their group against Benfica and Boca Juniors, Mitchell said he and his teammates are determined to leave their mark.
"If you watched the (Bayern) game, you could see we never give up regardless of the scoreline," he said.
Back home, Mitchell juggles the demands of a commission-based real estate job with evening training sessions and coaching duties at the club. His typical day starts early, squeezing in gym sessions before work, and ends late at night after training.
"It's not ideal for my wife," he joked.
"I don't get to see her that often, but she really respects the fact that this is a sacrifice that we have to make and she also has to make.
"(For her) just seeing myself and the whole team on the stage and obviously against the best players in the world, I think it's a really proud moment."
Mitchell admits that while the financial hit stings, the exposure could pay off in other ways.
"Maybe if someone was watching on TV and they realised I was in the industry, maybe they just want to have a chat and that's the way you can build some rapport," he said.
To the critics who have questioned the inclusion of Auckland City in a competition of this scale, Mitchell remains unapologetic.
"We don't bother too much about critics. We've earned the right to be here. People have to realise we are semi-professionals, but we do treat training and we treat our club like a professional club, with the resources we have," said Mitchell, whose side face Benfica on Friday.
"We earned the right to be here and we're proud to be here, and we're going to give it all on the pitch."

Caution by BoJ likely to keep Japanese capital overseas

Japan still has plenty of financial muscle with a net US$3.5 trillion in overseas stocks and bonds. — Reuters The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is taking a more cautious approach to reducing its balance sheet, meaning Japanese capital invested overseas is less likely to be coming home anytime soon. In the face of heightened economic uncertainty and recent volatility at the long end of the Japanese Government Bond (JGB) curve, the BoJ announced on Tuesday that it will halve the rate of its balance sheet rundown in fiscal year 2026 to 200 billion yen or about US$1.4bil a quarter. The central bank began gradually shrinking its bloated balance sheet 18 months ago and last August began an even more gradual interest rate-raising cycle, representing a historic shift after years of maintaining ultra-low and even negative nominal rates. All else being equal, this modest tightening would be expected to narrow the yield gap between Japanese and foreign bonds, making JGBs more attractive to domestic and foreign investors while also strengthening the yen. So why hasn't the Japanese capital been coming home? In part, because Japan's real interest rates and bond yields remain deeply negative, and the latest BoJ move suggests this is likely to remain the case for the foreseeable future. The prospect of Japanese real returns staying deeply negative is enhanced by current inflation dynamics. Price pressures Inflation in Japan is the highest in two years by some measures and may prove sticky if Middle East tensions continue to put upward pressure on oil prices. Japan imports around 90% of its energy and almost all of its oil. Japan's yield curve could also potentially flatten from its recent historically steep levels if the BoJ's decision caps or lowers long-end yields. And the curve will flatten further if the BoJ continues to 'normalise' interest rates – something BoJ governor Kazuo Ueda insists is still on the table, although markets think the central bank is on hold until next year. Either way, a flatter yield curve won't be particularly appealing to Japanese investors who may be considering pulling money out of the United States or European markets. And there is a lot of money to repatriate, meaning even marginal shifts in Japanese investors' positioning could be meaningful. Assets abroad While Japan is no longer the world's largest creditor nation, having recently lost the crown to Germany after holding it for more than three decades, it still has plenty of financial muscle with a net US$3.5 trillion in overseas stocks and bonds, the highest total ever. Analysts at Deutsche Bank estimate that Japanese life insurers and pension funds hold more than US$2 trillion in foreign assets, around 30% of their total assets. What would prompt Japanese investors to repatriate? In a deep dive on the topic last month, JP Morgan analysts said several stars would have to align, namely a sustainable rise in long-term Japanese interest rates, an improvement in the country's public finances, and steady yen appreciation against the US dollar. That's a tall order. But if this were to materialise, and banks and other depository institutions reverted to pre-'Abenomics' asset allocation ratios of 82% domestic bonds and 13% foreign securities, repatriation flows from these institutions alone could amount to as much as 70 trillion yen. That's just under US$500bil at current exchange rates. That's not JP Morgan's base case though, certainly not in the near term. But over the long term, they think some reversal of the flow of capital from JGBs into US bonds over the last decade or more is 'plausible'. The BoJ's decision on Tuesday probably makes the prospect of any significant capital shift less plausible, though, at least for now. — Reuters Jamie McGeever is a columnist for Reuters. Real Madrid confirm Mbappe's release from US hospital after stomach bug scare

MIAMI, June 20 — Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe has been released from hospital in the United States after suffering a stomach bug, the Spanish giants said yesterday. Mbappe, who is in the USA at the Club World Cup, had what the club called 'an acute case of gastroenteritis' and was taken in for tests and treatment. 'Our player Kylian Mbappe was discharged from hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid training camp,' Los Blancos said in a statement. 'Mbappe will continue with specific medical treatment and will gradually return to the team's activities,' they added. French striker Mbappe missed his team's Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday, a 1-1 draw in Xabi Alonso's first game at the helm. Alonso said on Tuesday the 26-year-old forward had been 'feeling a little better' after illness in the run up to the match in Miami. Madrid B-team player Gonzalo Garcia, 21, started in Mbappe's stead and opened the scoring for Real Madrid against their Saudi Arabian opponents. Madrid's second match in Group H is on Sunday June 22 against Mexican side Pachuca in Charlotte. Mbappe finished as the European Golden Shoe winner in his first season at Real Madrid with 31 goals in La Liga, but Los Blancos finished the season without a major trophy. — AFP
