Top PLFI commander Martin Karketta killed in Jharkhand encounter

Indian Express6 days ago
A top commander of the banned People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), Martin Karketta, was killed in an encounter with security forces on Tuesday morning in the Changabadi Upartoli area, under Kamdara Police Station limits in Jharkhand's Gumla district.
Karketta carried a reward of Rs 15 lakh on his head and had emerged as a central figure in PLFI's hierarchy after the arrest of its former chief, Dinesh Gope.
Gumla SP Haris Bin Zaman said the encounter took place between 8 am and 9 am, following credible intelligence inputs that Karketta was camping in the area with his squad. A joint operation was launched under the supervision of the local SDPO with support from Kamdara police and other district and special units.
'As the team reached the location and confirmed the presence of the squad, Karketta's men opened fire. Our forces retaliated, and during the exchange, Martin Karketta was neutralised,' Zaman told The Indian Express. A pistol was recovered from the site.
Zaman added that three to four of Karketta's associates managed to flee the area during the encounter, firing at the security forces as they escaped.
According to officials, Karketta had previously served as a PLFI zonal commander and rose to the top after Gope's arrest. 'His killing is being seen as a major success in Jharkhand's ongoing anti-Naxal operations,' Zaman said.
Karketta hailed from Redma village in Gumla's Kamdara area and was a childhood friend of Dinesh Gope. The two had studied together in Mahugao, Lapung, and later went on to expand the PLFI, leading several major operations under its banner.
Gope, who carried a reward of Rs 25 lakh, was arrested earlier this year in Nepal in a joint operation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Jharkhand Police. Following his arrest, Karketta took over PLFI's operations.
As de facto leader, Karketta expanded the outfit's network beyond Jharkhand, setting up committees in Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. Under his leadership, the PLFI continued to collect levies from coal traders, contractors, and local businesses, and was involved in multiple criminal activities, police claimed in a release.
Officials said the outfit's operational command had remained with Karketta until his death. Combing operations in the region are currently underway.

Bengaluru police bust racket converting international calls to local calls in IT corridor

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Bengaluru police said on Tuesday that it unearthed a racket where international calls were illegally routed as local calls, allegedly to enable cybercrimes. The investigation started after a representative of Vodafone Idea Limited filed a police complaint stating that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had alerted the telecom operator about an illegal SIM box operation suspected of cybercriminal activities. The police said they recovered six SIM boxes, 133 SIM cards, 12 data storage servers, one networking router/switch, and other related equipment, with the total value estimated at approximately Rs 10 lakh. Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized SIM cards were actively used in various cybercrimes, they added. A SIM box is a specialised device containing multiple SIM cards designed to route international calls back into domestic networks, disguising them as local calls. This practice not only compromises national security but also causes significant financial losses to both government revenues and legitimate telecom operators. According to a police officer, the DoT's investigation traced the suspicious activity to the International Tech Park in Bengaluru's Whitefield area. The central department's analysis revealed that 107 mobile numbers issued by Vodafone Idea Limited were suspected of being used in these illegal SIM box operations. The CCB's internal verification discovered that all 107 SIM cards had been issued to Gleam Global Services India Private Limited, a company that allegedly served as a front for an elaborate fraud. Seemant Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, urged data centre owners to conduct thorough background verification before renting facilities. 'In this case, the owners had no clue about the misuse,' he said. An engineer previously arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly defrauding cybercrime victims by offering fictitious legal assistance online has confessed to his role in installing the SIM box infrastructure at Iron Mountain Data Centre in Whitefield, according to the police. The arrested engineer, Chota Ahammed Mubaraq, also known as Tufail, has revealed that two conspirators, currently abroad, were directing his activities remotely, the police added. A CCB officer said the police would take steps to issue lookout circulars for Tufail's overseas accomplices. Tufail, a BE graduate, is originally from Tamil Nadu but was residing in Kothanur, Bengaluru, the police said.

Jarkiholi-Jolle camp regains edge over Katti faction in Hukkeri sugar plant

Belagavi: The ongoing political rivalry between the Jarkiholi-Jolle faction and the Katti family in Hukkeri taluka took a dramatic turn on Monday, with the board of management of Hiranyakeshi Sugar Factory, led by Basavaraj Kallatti, once again pledging its allegiance to the Jarkiholi-Jolle camp, delivering a significant blow to the Katti family. Founded in 1956 by cooperative stalwart Appanagouda Patil on the outskirts of Sankeshwar town, the factory was under the Katti family's control since 1995. However, in January 2025, the faction led by BJP's former MP Annasaheb Jolle and Arabhavi MLA Balachandra Jarkiholi wrested control, following the defection of seven directors. This led to the resignation of Nikhil Katti as chairman, ending the Kattis' three-decade dominance at the factory. The shift was largely driven by financial assurances from Jolle, who channeled funds through his Beereshwar Cooperative Credit Society. However, dissatisfaction over high interest rates prompted board members to approach local leaders Ramesh Katti and AB Patil, urging them to take charge of the factory. In a rare political alliance, long-time rivals Katti and Patil joined forces and regained control of the factory on July 29 this year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Online Skin Care Consultation - Learn More AskLayers Learn More Undo Yet, within 12 days, the factory once again slipped from their grasp and returned to the Jarkiholi-Jolle camp. Speaking to the media, vice-chairman Ashok Pattanashetti said: "The factory needs Rs 150 crore for smooth operations. We turned to Ramesh Katti and AB Patil, who had promised alternative sources of funding, but failed. Jolle's assistance is now crucial in getting the factory up and running." Commenting on the prevailing scenario, Annasaheb Jolle said: "The factory stands as a symbol of Appanagouda Patil's vision of the cooperative movement. My involvement, along with Balachandra Jarkiholi, is solely to uphold those ethos and ensure the factory's sustainability."
