U.S. President Trump hosts Pak Army Chief Munir
In a rare gesture, U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Jun 18, 2025) hosted Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir at the White house, weeks after India and Pakistan were locked in a four-day military conflict.
The closed-door luncheon meeting came amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran with Mr. Trump exploring Washington's possible involvement.
Islamabad is known for his close ties with Tehran.
Mr. Munir met President Trump over lunch at the White House, the Geo News reported.
It was immediately not known what transpired in the meeting between Mr. Trump and 'Field Marshal' Munir.
It is rare for the U.S. president to host a lunch for the army chief of a foreign country. There have been precedents of Pakistan army chiefs, including Ayub Khan, Zia ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf, receiving such invites.
But they were holding the post of president as well.
The U.S. president had cut short his trip to Canada's Kananaskis for the G7 Leaders' Summit and returned to Washington Tuesday (Jun 17, 2025) morning amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Earlier, an official advisory said Mr. Trump would be hosting the Pakistan Army Chief for lunch in the Cabinet Room of the White House at 1 p.m.
Interestingly, Mr. Trump, during a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asked him if he could stop in the U.S. on his way back from Canada.
But the prime minister expressed his inability to do so 'due to pre-scheduled engagements,' Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.
In the phone talks, Mr. Modi told Mr. Trump that India and Pakistan halted their military actions last month following direct talks between the two militaries without any mediation by the U.S..
Mr. Modi also firmly stated that India does not and will 'never accept' mediation and that the discussions between Indian and Pakistani militaries on cessation of military actions were initiated at Islamabad's request, Misri said.
The Prime Minister's assertion came against the backdrop of Mr. Trump's persistent claims that he brokered the ceasefire deal between India and Pakistan.
The White House's invitation to Mr. Munir is being projected by officials in Islamabad as a major diplomatic win, according to the Dawn newspaper.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
The strikes triggered four days of intense clashes that ended with an understanding on stopping the military actions on May 10.
New Delhi has been maintaining that India's fierce counter-attack that day forced Pakistan to plead for ending the hostilities.
Last month, Mr. Munir was elevated to the rank of Field Marshal in the first such promotion since Ayub Khan in 1959.
In an address to the Pakistani-American community on Monday (Jun 16, 2025) evening, Mr. Munir urged India to engage with Pakistan 'as a civilised nation' rather than 'attempting to impose regional hegemony', the Dawn reported.
The Pakistan Army Chief also rejected allegations that Pakistan was behind the Pahalgam terror attack.
Mr. Munir accused India of seeking to establish a 'new normal' of 'violating international borders', which he said Pakistan had 'forcefully rejected', according to the newspaper.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7.
The on-ground hostilities from the Indian and Pakistan sides that lasted for four days ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.
Mr. Munir's interaction with the Pakistani American community at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington's Georgetown neighbourhood drew some crowds, the Dawn said.
However, protesters aligned with the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party of former prime minister Imran Khan demonstrated outside, calling for democratic reforms and the release of their jailed leaders.
Mr. Munir also addressed the broader regional landscape, declaring Pakistan's 'clear and strong' support for Iran in its war with Israel while also backing U.S. efforts to de-escalate the situation.
'We want this war to end immediately,' he said.
One of the most consequential developments during Mr. Munir's visit, however, has been Pakistan's strengthened counterterrorism partnership with the United States, particularly against the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) group, the paper said.
Gen Michael Kurilla, head of U.S. Central Command, recently described Pakistan as a 'phenomenal partner' in the fight against ISIS-K, praising Islamabad's operations along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Gen Kurilla revealed to the House Armed Services Committee that Pakistani operations, supported by U.S. intelligence, had killed dozens of IS-K militants and captured multiple high-value individuals, including Mohammad Sharifullah, one of the masterminds of the Abbey Gate bombing in Kabul that killed 13 American troops.
'The first person Mr. Munir called was me,' Gen Kurilla said.
'He said, 'I've caught him — ready to extradite him back to the U.S.. Please tell the Secretary of Defence and the President'.' Sharifullah was promptly extradited.
In a separate statement to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Kurilla noted that Pakistan had conducted 'dozens of operations' to dismantle IS-K's presence in the border regions and continues to play a pivotal role in countering terrorism in Central and South Asia.

Threats by criminal gangs: Haryana struggles to garner revenue from liquor-vend auctions as bidders dry up
With the shadow of criminals looming large over the liquor trade in the state, the BJP led Haryana government faces the challenge of accomplishing its excise revenue target of ₹14,063.91 crore from the sale of liquor for 2025-26 financial year. Even after completion of five rounds of bidding, liquor contractors in 20 districts, reeling from a recent killing and threats by criminal gangs, have shown reluctance to bid for 260 pending retail liquor zones. The reserve price of the pending 260 zones is about ₹3,980 crore. The June 13 killing of a liquor contractor in Kurukshetra by gangsters, indiscriminate firing at a liquor vend in Rohtak on May 26 where the assailants threatened the contractor not to participate in the bidding for allotment of liquor vends for 2025-27, opening of fire outside a liquor vend on April 8 in Yamunanagar have left liquor contractors petrified and thus affected the business sentiment. So far, the state government has been able to allot 934 retail liquor zones across 22 districts. Each zone consisted of a liquor vend each for selling Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and country liquor. Chief minister asks DGP to take action against gangsters Chief minister Nayab Saini on Tuesday evening held a high-level review meeting to assess the law-and-order situation in the context of the setbacks during the excise auctions. The chief minister expressed concern over the killing of a liquor contractor in Kurukshetra and directed the director general of police (DGP) to act firmly. The DGP was also asked to take steps to provide security to everyone who gets threats and extortion calls. The chief minister, it seems, realises that a shortfall in the excise duty receipts will adversely affect execution of BJP's poll promise of providing monthly financial assistance of ₹2,100 to every woman in the state under the Lado Lakshmi Yojana. The pre-poll pacifier is likely to cost the state exchequer anything between ₹17,640 crore to ₹23,940 crore. Bijender, uncle of the deceased liquor contractor, Shantanu and a partner in the family's liquor business said that they received calls from criminals who threatened them not to participate in the bidding for liquor vends in Yamunanagar. 'Our partner, Mahender Rana also received such threat calls,' he said. Bijender told HT that his nephew, Shantanu had also received threat calls from gangsters last year. 'He had applied for an arms licence about six months back. The application is still pending with the office of SP, Kurukshetra,' he said. 'Shantanu was asked not to bid for a retail liquor zone in Kurukshetra last year. The gangsters said that they wanted a particular individual, one of their own probably, to get that retail liquor zone allotted. So, we did not participate. But the person who got that zone allotted was never investigated by the police,' said a member of the family of the deceased. Most of the liquor contractors HT spoke to preferred not to be named fearing reprisal by the gangsters. A contractor who was allotted vends in a national capital region (NCR) district said that it was primarily due to huge financial investment and fear of criminals that the contractors are disinclined to take risks by participating in bidding. 'The area of our operation is still trouble free. So, we took a calculated risk,' he said. 'Many contractors are so scared of the threats that they do not even want to report the matter,' said another contractor Excise officials told HT that 794 retail liquor zones were allotted in the first round of bidding from May 26 to May 31. In the second round of bidding from June 3 to June 6, 103 zones were allotted. 'But only 29 zones could be allotted in the third round on June 9, only two zones in the fourth round on June 10 and six zones were allotted in the fifth round on June 13,' said an official expressing dismay at the turn of events. Statistics tells a different story Excise officials, however, said they expect that the pending 260 retail liquor zones will also get allotted. An official spokesperson on Tuesday said the state government has been able to auction majority of the excise zones (934) so far and secure significantly higher revenue of ₹11,054 crore as compared to last year's ₹5,037 crores. 'The excise auctions have so far attracted good response,' the spokesperson said. However, liquor trade analysts said that it is irrational to compare the licence fee realised for 2025-27 policy with the revenue receipts earned from licence fee of corresponding zones in 2024-25. 'The present policy is applicable for 21 months and 20 days starting from June 12, 2025 to March 31, 2027 and the licence fee of ₹11,054 crore earned in the five rounds of auctions is for the same period spread over two financial years. So, this amount cannot be compared with the 2024-25 revenue earned from licence fee which was for a 12-month period. The ₹11,054 crore earned so far as licence fee will be paid in monthly instalments over 21 months,'' said a trade analyst not willing to be quoted. The excise policy lays down that 91% of the bid money shall be payable by the successful contractor in monthly instalments. Sensing the difficult situation, the state government had on May 20 amended the 2025-27 excise policy approved by the Council of Ministers on May 5 to ease the bidding process. The amended policy relaxed the stipulation of depositing 15% of the bid money or licence fee as security fee by reducing it to 11%.

‘Nobody knows what…': Donald Trump's cryptic threat amid escalating Israel-Iran conflict
As the Israel-Iran conflict entered its seventh day on Thursday, US President Donald Trump declined to reveal whether the United States would join Israel's military campaign targeting Iranian nuclear sites. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said, 'I may do it. I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I'm going to do.' Later, President Trump said Iranian officials had expressed interest in visiting Washington for talks, adding, 'We may do that.' However, he noted, 'It's a little late' for such discussions. Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Germany, France, and Britain are set to meet their Iranian counterpart in Geneva on Friday for nuclear talks. A German diplomatic source told Reuters the discussions aim to secure firm assurances from Iran that its nuclear programme will remain strictly civilian. While diplomatic efforts were underway, many Tehran residents sought safety on Wednesday, crowding highways in an attempt to flee the capital amid intensified Israeli airstrikes. According to The Wall Street Journal, President Trump informed senior aides that he had approved attack plans on Iran but was delaying the final order to see whether Tehran would abandon its nuclear programme. When asked whether he believed the Iranian government could collapse due to Israel's military campaign, Trump responded, 'Sure, anything could happen.' Referring to the possible destruction of Iran's Fordow nuclear enrichment facility, Trump said, 'We're the only ones that have the capability to do it. But that doesn't mean I'm going to do it — at all.' Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, criticised US President Donald Trump in a televised speech on Wednesday, his first appearance since Friday. 'The Americans should know that any US military intervention will undoubtedly be accompanied by irreparable damage,' Khamenei warned. 'The Iranian nation will not surrender,' he added. Meanwhile, Israel said its air force had destroyed Iran's police headquarters in its latest round of bombings. The Israeli military also reported that air raid sirens were activated in northern Israel just before 2 a.m. local time on Thursday (23:00 GMT Wednesday). It said a drone launched from Iran was intercepted, followed by the downing of another drone in the Jordan Valley minutes later. With Reuters inputs

Trump to host Pak Army chief
Washington: United States President Donald Trump is set to host Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir for lunch at the White House. The announcement comes about a week after a top US military official asserted the country's relationship with Pakistan because of its military's role in countering the threat from Islamic State-Khorasan Province General Michael Kurilla, chief of the US Central Command, during a hearing by the House Armed Services Committee last week, said: 'The actions of our Pakistani partners that led to the arrest and extradition of Mohammad Sharifullah, the ISIS-K planner behind the 26 August 2021 suicide attack at Abbey Gate that killed 13 US service members and approximately 160 civilians, highlights Pakistan's value as a partner in countering CASA terror EXOPs threats worldwide, and it will only increase as the Taliban continues to face security challenges within its borders.' 'That's why we need… to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India. I do not believe it is a binary switch that we can't have one with Pakistan if we have a relationship with India,' Kurilla added. US' iterations come amid the strained relationship between India and Pakistan after a deadly terror attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam in April this year prompted India to launch a military strike against Pakistan leading to four days of fierce confrontation in June.
