Uttarakhand floods: Ancient Shiva temple Kalp Kedar also buried under debris
Uttarkashi, Aug 5 (PTI) The ancient Kalp Kedar temple here was buried in the debris brought over by the flash flood in the Kheer Ganga river on Tuesday.
The temple remained buried under ground for many years, possibly due to a previous disaster, with only its tip visible over ground.
Built in the Kature style, the architecture of the Shiva temple is similar to that of Kedarnath Dham.
An excavation led to its discovery in 1945. After digging several feet underground, an ancient Shiva temple was found whose structure was similar to Kedarnath temple.
The temple was below the ground level and devotees had to go down to offer prayers in the temple. People say that some water from the Kheer Ganga would often drift onto the 'shivling' installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and a path had been created for it. There are stone carvings outside the temple.

'Chapters on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman and Major Somnath Sharma Introduced in NCERT syllabus," (sic) he said on X. According to a government press release, chapters on the lives and sacrifices of Field Marshal Manekshaw, Brig Usman, and Maj Sharma have been added to the NCERT syllabus in this academic year for students of classes 7 and 8 in Urdu-medium schools, as well as students of class 8 in English-medium schools. 'The newly introduced chapters aim to provide students with inspirational narratives of courage and duty," the press release said. It said Field Marshal Manekshaw, India's first officer to be conferred the rank of Field Marshal, is remembered for his exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. Brig Usman and Major Sharma, both recipients of the Mahavir Chakra and Param Vir Chakra (posthumously), laid down their lives in service of the nation and remain symbols of supreme sacrifice, it added. This is part of the effort to establish the National War Memorial (NWM) as a prominent national landmark, and for which the defence ministry has partnered with education ministry and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). 'Through these stories and their inclusion in the curriculum, students will not only gain insights into India's military history but also absorb important life lessons on resilience, empathy, emotional intelligence, and the importance of contributing to nation-building," the press release said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National War Memorial to India on February 25, 2019. It is located in the iconic Central Vista 'C' Hexagon at India Gate. In the Haryana Board 10th Result 2025, 92.49 per cent of the students who took the exam passed. The results were announced on May 17. Four students secured rank 1 — Rohit from Oxford Public Senior Secondary School, Hisar; Mahi from New Saraswati Senior Secondary School, Ambala; Roma from CR Senior Secondary School, Jhajjar; and Tanya from CR Senior Secondary School, Jhajjar, all scoring 497 out of 500 marks. Girls outperformed boys. Out of 129,249 girl students, 121,566 passed, achieving an overall pass percentage of 94.06 per cent. Among male students, 142,250 took the exams, and 129,544 passed, resulting in a pass percentage of 91.07 per cent. Rewari emerged as the top-performing district, while Nuh was the lowest-performing district. In 2024, HBSE recorded an impressive overall pass percentage of 95.22 per cent for regular students and 88.73 per cent for self-study candidates. Of the 286,714 students who appeared, 273,015 successfully passed, while 3,652 students did not qualify. Despite Being Visually Impaired, Roshan Kumar Clears JPSC; Set To Become Officer
Roshan Kumar, despite being visually impaired and facing financial hardships, secured the 340th rank in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission exam. An inspiring story has emerged from Koderma in Jharkhand, where a sister devoted her time and effort to support her visually impaired brother, becoming his eyes and guiding him to the examination hall. Acting as a scribe during the exam, she wrote the entire answer sheet, resulting in her brother's success at the age of 22. Roshan Kumar, despite being visually impaired and facing financial hardships, secured the 340th rank in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission exam and was selected for the Jharkhand Finance Service. He suffers from a vision defect called Nystagmus, causing blurred vision since birth. Nonetheless, Roshan persevered through his challenges. His elder brother Sanjeev shared that Roshan was previously selected for a position in the post office and currently resides in Vardhman. Roshan's younger sister, Sneha, took on the role of scribe during the exam, reading questions and writing answers as dictated by her brother. Following his success in the preliminary exam, Sneha assisted him in preparing for the main exam by discussing mock test questions from the coaching institute over the phone and sending written answers in PDF format for review. Their efforts symbolised the deep love and dedication between the siblings. The entire family rejoiced when the exam results were announced. Sneha shared that Roshan often visited government offices where officials did not treat him properly. This experience motivated Roshan to become a senior officer to serve the needy and helpless. He faced significant difficulties while attempting to obtain a ration card, including the lack of assistance from helpline numbers, which compounded his challenges similar to those faced by ordinary citizens. The JPSC final result of the Combined Civil Service Examination 2023 was declared on July 25. This recruitment process was conducted to fill 342 vacancies across various state services in Jharkhand.
