
Man wins legal fight over car theft after 22 years: Consumer Court directs National Insurance to pay ₹1.4 lakh
Agrawal bought an Alto car on March 10, 2003, and financed it through a car loan from ICICI Bank in Jhandewalan, Delhi. He also insured the vehicle for ₹ 1.9 lakh on the same day.
However, on April 6, less than a month later, his car was stolen from Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar during a vacation with his family.
Agrawal quickly filed an FIR and informed the insurer and bank about the theft, anticipating a smooth insurance claim process. He submitted all necessary documents to the insurer by January 2004, the report said.
His claim was rejected by the National Insurance Company stating that Agrawal did not take proper care of his car and had parked it unsafely.
Agrawal wrote to the National Insurance Company on four occasions, including May 2, 2005, July 24, 2005, July 17, 2006, and April 18, 2006. However, he did not receive any payment or response in return.
He subsequently appealed to the Ghaziabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC). The commission initially dismissed his petition, citing a lack of jurisdiction to decide on this matter.
Following the dismissal by the Ghaziabad DCDRC, Agrawal in 2011 appealed to the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. In February 2025, more than a decade later, the SCDRC determined that the Ghaziabad DCDRC is the correct authority to issue a ruling on this issue. In July 2025, the Ghaziabad DCDRC issued a ruling in favour of Agrawal.
The Ghaziabad DCDRC ordered a payment of ₹ 1.43 lakh to Agarwal, plus ₹ 5,000 fine. This sum represented 75 per cent of the vehicle's 2003 insured declared value (IDV) of ₹ 1.9 lakh. The ruling also stated that if the National Insurance Company did not pay this amount within 45 days, a simple interest penalty of 6 per cent per year would be applied until the compensation was fully paid.

WPI inflation declines to 2-year low of (-) 0.58 pc in July
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Wholesale price inflation declined to a 2-year low of (-) 0.58 per cent in July, as deflation in food and fuel kept WPI in the negative zone for the second consecutive month, government data released on Thursday showed. Experts, however, projected WPI inflation to move back into positive territory in August, as base effects fade and seasonal price increases continue. WPI-based inflation was 2.10 per cent in July last year, and (-) 0.13 per cent in June. 'Negative rate of inflation in July 2025 is primarily due to a decrease in prices of food articles, mineral oils, crude petroleum & natural gas, manufacture of basic metals, etc," the industry ministry said in a statement. According to WPI data, deflation in food articles widened to 6.29 per cent in July, as against a deflation of 3.75 per cent in June, with vegetables witnessing a sharp drop. Deflation in vegetables was 28.96 per cent in July, compared to 22.65 per cent in June. Fuel and power saw a negative inflation or deflation of 2.43 per cent in July, as against 2.65 per cent in June. In the case of manufactured products, inflation was higher at 2.05 per cent in July, as against 1.97 per cent in the month before. Barclays in a research note said that July wholesale price inflation was driven by lower food and energy prices. 'The continued negative print in headline in year-on-year terms despite the month-on-month rise in wholesale prices is explained by base effects," Barclays said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which takes into account retail inflation to decide on monetary policy, had kept benchmark policy rates unchanged at 5.5 per cent earlier this month. The retail inflation in July dropped to an 8-year low of 1.55 per cent. ICRA Senior Economist Rahul Agrawal said the deflation in wholesale inflation was largely driven by the food segment, which witnessed a larger year-on-year contraction, led by vegetables, pulses, and eggs, meat & fish. 'Similar to the CPI, the WPI is also likely to have bottomed out in July 2025. Looking ahead, ICRA expects the headline WPI to re-enter the inflationary territory in August 2025, after a gap of two months, amid the hardening in YoY prints for food and crude oil so far, depreciation in the USD/INR pair, as well as an unfavourable base," he said. Besides, heavy rains could push up perishable prices sharply in the second half of August, and remain a key monitorable, Agrawal said. Bank of Baroda Economist Sonal Badhan said going forward, as uncertainties remain regarding US sanctions on importers of Russian oil and status of a ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine also remains in limbo, oil prices are noting some upward pressure. 'However, renewed tariff-related tensions are set to exert downward pressure on commodity prices as global growth prospects weaken. As a result, we expect WPI to remain contained in the coming months," Badhan said. PHDCCI President Hemant Jain said 'going forward, the moderation in prices of food articles and a favourable progress in the southwest monsoon will bolster agricultural activity boosting economic growth". JSW Cement shares list at 4% premium on NSE; should you buy, sell or hold?
JSW Cement IPO listing today: Shares of JSW Cement, a part of diversified JSW Group, made a positive debut on Dalal Street on Thursday. August 14, 2025. The company's stock opened at ₹153.5 on the NSE, reflecting a premium of 4.42 per cent over the issue price of ₹147. After listing, the stock fell over 1 per cent from the listing price to ₹150.75. On the BSE, the stock opened at ₹153, up 4 per cent from the issue price. Post-listing, the stock was trading at ₹151, down 1.2 per cent from the listing price. The listing price of JSW Cement was in-line with the grey market estimates. Ahead of the listing, unlisted shares of JSW Cement were trading at ₹151.8, up 3.27 per cent from the issue price of ₹147, according to sources tracking unofficial markets. This expansion will come through relatively low-cost capex over the next few years,' he said. The portion reserved for Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) was subscribed 15.8 times, the Non-institutional investors (NIIs) portion was subscribed 10.97 times, and the retail investors at 1.81 times. The ₹3,600-crore mainline IPO comprises a fresh issue of 108.8 million equity shares and an offer for sale (OFS) of 136.1 million shares. The company set the IPO price band in the range of ₹139 to ₹147. The public issue opened for subscription on Thursday, August 7, 2025, and closed on Monday, August 11, 2025. Kfin Technologies is the registrar of the issue. Axis Capital, JM Financial, Citigroup Global, DAM Capital, Goldman Sachs (India), Jefferies India, Kotak Mahindra Capital, and SBI Capital Markets are the book-running lead managers. According to the red herring prospectus (RHP), the company plans to use the net fresh issue proceeds for setting up a new integrated cement plant in Nagaur (Rajasthan), repayment of debt and general corporate purposes. Now, hard data from India's equity markets reveals this isn't just a cruel coincidence but a pattern that cost small investors crores in the June quarter data shows retail investors pared stakes in 967 stocks during Q1, yet these very stocks delivered a staggering average return of over 24% in the same period. In RIL alone, small investors are estimated to have sold stocks worth around Rs 6,000 crore, just as the stock surged 18%, according to calculations by Prime Database RBL Bank , retail ownership plummeted from 22.15% to 15.73% while the stock rallied 43%. Are you missing out? Momentum trapThe irony cuts deep: retail investors consistently miss the very momentum they're chasing. "The market bottomed out around April 7, and then staged a sharp rally — particularly in small- and mid-cap stocks," observes Apurva Sheth, Head of Market Perspectives & Research at SAMCO Securities. "The Retail investors are the last lot to enter the counter which are in momentum.""They always tend to react after the initial move, likely entering late, missing the momentum bus as the prices had already surged and risk-reward turned unfavourable."The fundamental flaw? "Momentum works only when one rides the trend with discipline, not by reacting to recent performance or crowd sentiment. Also, it works over a longer horizon of time," Sheth latest data reinforces a harsh reality about retail investor behavior. "The three glaring characteristics of the retail investors are their investment decisions are based on emotion, poor timings of entry-exits and instead of investing they resort to trading," Sheth states bluntly. "As a result, they often buy into euphoria (peaks) and sell into fear (bottoms)."The cycle feeds on itself. "Retail participation is heavily influenced by news cycles, social media buzz, stock rallies, and peer performance. When markets peak, there's optimism and FOMO (fear of missing out), prompting retail inflows. When markets correct, the fear of capital loss kicks in, leading to redemptions or panic selling."The root cause remains unchanged: "Many retail investors approach markets like a casino and treat stocks akin to a lottery — chasing quick returns without understanding valuations or business fundamentals.
