Three rescued on 'intense' night for lifeboat crew
Humber Rescue, which is based in Hessle, near Hull, said it responded to a number of serious callouts on Friday. In one incident, a person was pulled from the water.
Two other people, including an elderly man, were rescued from a vessel stuck on mud near Brough.
Paul Berriff, the founder of Humber Rescue, said: "To save the life of another is one of the highest honours a person can carry."
A lifeboat was launched shortly after 18:00 BST after a report of two vessels coming aground near Brough, a spokesperson for Humber Rescue said.
However, while en-route, the boat was redirected to another emergency nearby.
A person was pulled from the water on to the boat and given immediate care. The casualty was then taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment.
The crew returned to the grounded vessels near Brough, but were called to reports of another person in the water near the lifeboat station, the spokesperson said.
This turned out to be a false alarm and, after refuelling, the crew launched again to help two stranded people on one of the grounded vessels.
A rescue helicopter was deployed to assist by illuminating the scene and the lifeboat crew carried out a successful mud rescue with the support of coastguard teams from Cleethorpes, Hornsea and Hull.
The two people were taken to shore, where they were checked over and found to be well and in good spirits.
A sailor on the other vessel chose to remain on board to float off on the rising tide.
Humber Rescue is an independent lifeboat charity, which provides rapid search and rescue operations across the Humber estuary. Last year, volunteers attended more than 130 call-outs, according to the service.
Mr Berriff said: "The last 10 hours have shown, once again, why Humber Rescue exists and why it must continue.
"I'm extremely proud of every crew member involved for their courage, calm, and relentless commitment to those in need."

Oldest living person turns 116
The oldest living person is celebrating turning 116, in Surrey, on Thursday. Ethel Caterham became the oldest living person in April after the death, aged 116, of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canbarro Lucas. She will celebrate her birthday in a care home in Lightwater and take the day 'at her own pace' surrounded by her family. Ms Caterham was born on August 21 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, five years before the start of the First World War, as the second youngest of eight siblings. This makes her the last surviving subject of Edward VII. According to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) she met her husband Norman, who was a major in the British Army, at a dinner party in 1931. They were stationed in Hong Kong and Gibraltar and had two children. Her husband died in 1976, the GRG said. A spokesperson for her care home said: 'Ethel and her family are so grateful for all of the kind messages and interest shown to her as she celebrates her 116th birthday this year. 'Ethel has again chosen not to give any interviews, preferring to spend the day quietly with her family so that she can enjoy it at her own pace. 'The King may be her one concession, understandably. Thank you again for your kind wishes on this special day.' Last year Ms Caterham was sent a birthday card by the King to mark her 115th birthday. The title of the oldest person ever is held by French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years 164 days, according to Guinness World Records.

Rise in number of NI pupils receiving top GCSE grades
The number of pupils receiving top grades in GCSE examinations in Northern Ireland has risen. Results have been delivered to more than 32,000 pupils across the region. The provisional results show that 31.6% of students achieved at least a 7 or an A grade and above, compared to 31.0% last year. Some 83.5% of students achieved grade C/4 and above, compared to 82.7% in 2024. The total number of GCSE entries in Northern Ireland decreased by 1.1% from 175,555 in 2024 to 173,675 in 2025. In GCSE English language, 25.1% of students achieved A/7 and above, compared to 24.7% in 2024, while 84.0% of students were awarded grade C/4 and above, compared to 82.5% last year. This year's figures for GCSE mathematics show that 27.1% of students achieved A/7 grade and above, compared to 27.8% in 2024, while 73.1% of students were awarded a grade C/4 or above, which is similar to the 73% last year. Overall, 41.4% of all GCSE entries were in Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects. Gerry Campbell, chief executive of CCEA, congratulated all the students who received their results. He said: 'These results represent the hard work, resilience and determination you've shown throughout your studies, and you should be proud of everything you've achieved. 'Today also marks a key milestone as many of you begin to make decisions about the future, whether that's continuing in education, entering training, or stepping into the world of work. 'I want to extend my sincere thanks to the teachers, school leaders and lecturers who have supported students every step of the way. 'I'm also grateful to our dedicated team of examiners and moderators, whose efforts ensure that results are delivered with fairness and care. Wishing every student success and fulfilment in whatever comes next.' Last Thursday, more than 25,000 students across the region received their AS and A-level examination results, with 30.4% of entries having achieved the top A* to A grades. Stormont Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald urged students receiving results today, and their parents/carers, to make use of the advice and guidance offered by her department's Careers Service. 'Making informed decisions following your exam results is crucial in helping you consider the next step on your journey,' she said. 'No matter what your results were, there are many opportunities available to you and I would urge you to examine these fully. 'You may wish to remain at school, or you might want to explore further education courses, start an apprenticeship or training programme or go into employment. 'My department's Careers Service can provide you with all the help and guidance you need. 'Whatever choice you make, I want to pass on my very best wishes for the future.' Greenock children's centre raises hundreds for hospice at annual go yellow day
BIG-HEARTED little ones from a Greenock nursery have raised hundreds for Ardgowan Hospice at their annual yellow day celebration. Hillend Children's Centre handed over a cheque of £366.73 to the hospice which they raised through having fun. The Border Street centre took part in a Go Yellow day which saw the youngsters and staff dress head-to-toe in bright outfits for charity – a tradition they have been taking part in for over a decade. (Image: George Munro) Not only did the children get to wear their best colourful clothes, but they also had a fun day in the sun, splashing in paddling pools and racing down water slides. It wasn't just the tots who got to enjoy the day but also parents who donated prizes and bought tickets for the hamper raffle which centre staff say always goes 'down a treat'. Stacy Barber, senior early years education and childcare officer at Hillend Children's centre, says she is so proud of the children and families for raising so much money. She said: 'We raise funds every year for the hospice because it is such a big part of our community and it is great to make it a fun day for the children. 'The parents and families are a really big help with the raffle which is always a big success every year and we wouldn't be able to give back to the hospice if it wasn't for their support.' Ardgowan Hospice fundraising assistant Carys Knox said: 'The hospice wants to say a big thank you to all of the children, staff and families at Hillend Children's Centre for their continued support over the years.'
