Major incident declared with people in hospital after school coach crash
The coach was carrying 60-70 passengers and was heading back to a nearby middle school after a day trip.
The crash happened on the A396 Cutcombe Hill, between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe, at about 3.15pm on Thursday, police said.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: 'We understand the coach was carrying approximately 60-70 people and was heading to Minehead Middle School at the time.
'We can confirm a number of casualties have been conveyed to hospital.
'The large majority of passengers have been taken to a rest centre in Wheddon Cross and we are working with the school to help them return at the earliest opportunity.
'Officers are at the school to help with that process, and we would ask any parents to please head there.'
Minehead Middle School caters for pupils aged between nine and 14, and is five days away from the end of term.
The A396 remains closed and police asked people to avoid the area.
Peter Prior-Sankey, director of local coach operator Ridlers, said: 'We were made aware of an incident involving one of our 70-seater vehicles at about 3.15pm this afternoon, understood to have taken place as a group of school pupils were returning from a day trip.
'We have since been liaising with both the school and the emergency services while we try to understand the extent of the incident.
'Everyone within the Ridlers team is of course deeply concerned and anxious to find out more detail, particularly concerning the welfare of the driver and passengers.
'While we wait for further information from police and other emergency teams, our hearts of course go out to the school pupils and to our driver.
'We will be doing everything possible to understand what has happened.'
A person resident who lives near the crash scene has described the incident as 'horrendous'.
The resident, who asked not to be named, told the PA news agency: 'The coach has gone down the slope. It's pretty steep around here and it's a big coach.
'There are no barriers along there or anything. We're used to it, you don't even notice it.
'I can't believe it happened quite honestly, it's the biggest thing I have known to go over the slope.
'It's horrendous, and I'm just so sorry for all those kids on that coach.'
In a post on X, Rachel Gilmour, MP for Tiverton and Minehead, said: 'I have heard news about a distressing road traffic incident around Wheddon Cross this afternoon.
'Emergency services are present, so please give them space to work.
'My thoughts are with all involved in the incident.'
The Transport Secretary said she was being kept updated on the crash.
In a post on X, Heidi Alexander said: 'I'm aware of the serious incident involving a bus near Minehead, Somerset.
'My thoughts are with all those involved.
'The emergency services are on scene, and I am receiving regular updates on the situation.'

A former police worker with an 'obsession' with weapons who used a 3D printer to make parts for a semi-automatic gun has been jailed for more than eight years. Police officers went to the Lincolnshire home of former PCSO Zoe Watts, 39, in December last year and found a 3D printer which she had used to manufacture parts of a semi-automatic weapon, as well as parts she had built to complete the gun, including springs, nuts and bolts. The gun was completed by police firearms experts but was not capable of firing projectiles and would have required further modification, Lincoln Crown Court heard on Friday, as she was sentenced to eight years and six months for a single count of attempting to manufacture a prohibited weapon. Judge Simon Hirst told Watts, who appeared at the hearing via video link from HMP Downview in Surrey wearing a blue and white flowery top, that he realised custody would be more difficult for her because of her neurodivergence, her previous police career and her transgender identity. He said it was clear from evidence heard during a trial at Lincoln Crown Court that Watts, of St Helen's Avenue, Lincoln, had an 'obsession with weapons'. She also has previous convictions for making an explosive substance and possessing illegal weapons, which meant she was prohibited from owning any weapons at the time of her arrest. The judge said: 'You told the jury you had searched the internet for bullets. You had a truly troubling internet search history, including those who had killed and notorious murderers.' She had also used Google to search 'has anybody been killed by a 3D printed gun?', had researched weapons and was looking for avenues to buy new weapons, Lincolnshire Police said. A pre-sentence report found that Watts was deemed to have a medium risk of reoffending. Judge Hirst said: 'There was some degree of planning in that you researched the weapon and you purchased items you were unable to manufacture yourself. You searched the internet for bullets. 'There is no evidence that the weapon would have been sold or loaned, but the very real danger is that the very existence of this weapon would become public knowledge. 'The weapon was incomplete and it would have required modification before it was able to fire projectiles, but the amount of work required to make it operational was relatively limited. 'Custody will be more difficult for you because of your neurodivergence, your previous police career and your transgender identity.' Lincolnshire Police officers were alerted to Watts's activity after receiving information that she was buying illegal material online. Senior officers then planned an operation to arrest her, and she was pulled over while driving her car in Lincoln and arrested by armed officers, while others carried out a search of her home. Once inside, officers found what police described as an 'Aladdin's cave' of weapons, including knives and a crossbow, alongside the parts for 3D printed guns. Watts claimed she was creating the weapons as toys in a defence victim statement before she was convicted at court earlier this year. Detective Inspector Gemma Skipworth said after the sentencing: 'This sends a clear message that if you're doing something wrong behind closed doors, it doesn't mean you're safe and can break the rules with impunity. '3D printers are becoming more and more popular, and people are naturally exploring what they can do with this technology. 'But it's important to know that when you are downloading plans and use a machine to produce something like a firearm, you're breaking the rules. 'And if you are caught, you will face a lengthy jail sentence – so please think about what you're doing. 'This case shows how committed my colleagues are to keeping the people of Lincolnshire safe and I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who worked on this case.'

Comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli to stand trial charged with alleged sex offences
Comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli has appeared in court charged with sex-related offences against three women at locations including at a BBC studio, with a trial date set for November. Kohli appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday to face a total of six charges against three different women between 2007 and 2016. The 56-year-old, who was a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother, denies the charges. Locations include the BBC studios at Pacific Quay, Glasgow, where he allegedly indecently assaulted a woman by squeezing her bottom and trying to hug her between April 2007 and September 2008. It is also alleged he committed a breach of the peace in the woman's presence in an unknown bar and restaurant in Glasgow between the same dates. He is charged with a further indecent assault on the same woman at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow, where he allegedly stroked the woman on the back and touched her hair, between the same dates. Kohli is also charged with an indecent assault on a second woman in the Cross Keys Hotel in Canonbie, Dumfries and Galloway, in June 2008 and is alleged to have seized her by the arm, lunged towards her and attempted to kiss her. On the same occasion, he allegedly committed a breach of the peace and carried out a sex act in the woman's presence, according to prosecutors. It is alleged that in December 2016 Kohli sexually assaulted a third complainant at the Yes Bar in Glasgow and 'seized her by the body and attempted to insert his tongue in her mouth'. Kohli has lodged a special defence to the allegation of indecent assault in the Cross Keys Hotel, claiming it was consensual, the court heard. The court heard that vulnerable witness orders had been made for all three women and a joint minute had been agreed between the prosecution and the defence. Defence lawyer Urfan Dar said: 'There is a special defence of consent for charge four.' Prosecutor Sean Docherty said that seven civilian witnesses will be called for the prosecution, along with one police officer. Sheriff John McCormick set a trial for November 24 at Glasgow Sheriff Court, estimated to last five days. Kohli, who appeared in court wearing a purple turban and a black-and-grey Adidas tracksuit, was released on bail. The comedian, who lives in Glasgow, has appeared on TV shows including Loose Ends and Question Time.

Teenager found guilty of murdering fellow pupil with hunting knife during lunch break
A schoolboy who stabbed another pupil to death on their lunch break has been found guilty of murder.
