Highland Park hosting biggest pickleball lesson in hopes of breaking record
The Park District of Highland Park is hosting over 400 pickleball participants at Danny Cunniff Park. The park district is partnering with the Chicago Slice professional pickleball team and Mark Miller's Munchkin Programs for the world record attempt.
Miller set the world record of 300 pickleball lesson participants in Scottsdale, Arizona, back in 2023. In 2024, Miller set a record for The World's Largest Tennis Lesson, gathering 400 kids.
"We're going to do it, 444 kids today," Miller said. "It's a record."
"The Park District is excited to be a part of this historic event to break a world record and promote youth involvement in the game of pickleball," said Nick Baird, Director of Recreation for the Park District of Highland Park. "We are seeing a huge increase in youth and young adult participation in our own pickleball lessons and programs. Pickleball is a great sport for kids because it is a fun, active game that promotes fitness, coordination, and teamwork."

Taitn Gray Leads Iowa High School All-State Baseball Team originally appeared on The Sporting News Dallas Center-Grimes senior Taitn Gray was named captain of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association 2025 all-state "Super Team," announced by the IHSBCA recently. Gray, who was picked by the Tampa Bay Rays in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft, hit .479 with 12 home runs, seven doubles, three triples and 38 RBI this past year for the Mustangs. Captain status for Matthys in Class 4A, Slagle in 3A, Bingham and Luett in 2A, and Schwiesow in 1A. Matthys hit .514 this past year with three home runs, 10 triples, eight doubles and 66 runs scored. He also stole 54 bases with an on-base percentage of .602 and a slugging percentage of .779. Slagle, a University of Iowa commit, hit .505 with 10 homers and 15 doubles, driving in 46 and scoring 47 runs. He was also 6-2 on the mound with 115 strikeouts and 1.03 earned run average. Bingham hit .459 with seven homers and 52 RBI, scoring 58 runs while stealing 54 bases to go along with a 9-0 record on the mound and 72 strikeouts. Luett, committed to Iowa, hit a state-leading .603 with 21 extra-base hits and 46 runs scored while going 11-0 on the mound with 128 strikeouts. Schwiesow sports a .448 batting average with 25 RBI, 26 runs scored, 18 steals and an 8-1 record with 104 strikeouts. Sparks beat the Sun 102-91 for their 8th win in 9 games
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dearica Hamby scored 21 points, Rickea Jackson added 20 points and Kelsey Plum had 18, and the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Connecticut Sun 102-91 on Thursday night for their eighth win in nine games. Los Angeles (14-15) scored 100-plus points for the fifth time in the last six games behind six players with double-digit scoring. Cameron Brink scored all 11 of her points in the second half, and Azura Stevens and Julie Allemand each had 10. Allemand secured her first career triple-double on a layup with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter. She also had 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Tina Charles and Marina Mabrey each scored 19 points for Connecticut (5-24). Bria Hartley added 16 points and Leila Lacan had 10 points and seven assists. Connecticut made 7 of 14 3-pointers in the first half to help build a 51-49 lead. Plum did not make her first field goal of the game until the 2:41 mark of the third quarter when her 3-pointer gave Los Angeles a 69-64 lead. Plum made Los Angeles' 10th 3-pointer with 3:58 left in the fourth — on Julie Allemand's 10th assist — for an 89-78 lead. Julie Allemand and Dearica Hamby lead Sparks past Sun for third straight win
When Julie Vanloo drew her second traveling violation before halftime, the crowd's disapproval rose in unison. On the floor, with tempers simmering on the Sparks' bench, a delay-of-game whistle drew another round of jeers from the Arena crowd. The calls weren't the only sources of frustration for the Sparks — the team also was trailing the last-place Connecticut Sun by 10 points. After the Sparks' deficit swelled to 13 points late in the second quarter, the Sparks (14-15) went on a 14-0 run, trimming their deficit to 51-49 by halftime. In the third quarter, Dearica Hamby helped keep the Sparks right behind the Sun (5-24) on the scoreboard. Hamby made the Sun look just as undersized, racking up six points, an assist and a defensive rebound over four minutes. A three-pointer by Rae Burrell late in third quarter gave the Sparks a 66-64 lead. The Sun managed to tie it in the fourth quarter before a Cameron Brink three with 8:06 left gave the Sparks the lead for good. Julie Allemand was a consistent force throughout the game, finishing with 10 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for her first career triple-double. From the opening quarter — when Allemand flashed her handle with a flurry of steps, an in-and-out dribble and a hard drive before dishing to Rickea Jackson for a three-pointer at the extended elbow — the Allemand Act didn't let up. She also proved to be a near-perfect scout for Kelsey Plum, the Sparks' leading scorer, who finished with 18 points after being held to just one point in the first half. Hamby finished with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists and Jackson scored 20 points. Burrell had nine points off the bench.
