The one-day operation, with the cooperation of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), National Registration Department, Immigration Department, District Office and police was coordinated by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom).Esscom Director-General Datuk Mohammad Mentek Esscom said the operation would be continued at other resort islands and water villages. Those detained during the raids at Mabul, Kapalai, Pom-Pom and Mataking, including resort workers, aged between six and 52 years, would be referred to the immigration for further questioning."All of them are investigated under Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002). The resort operators will also be called in and if found employing illegal immigrants, they will have to face the music," he said.He said the operation was a follow-up to Ops Gasak 1 to Ops Gasak 3 that was launched on Nov 24, involving several islands and water villages.Meanwhile, 15 illegal immigrants who worked at a resort have been arrested and are being investigated in connection with the abduction incident.Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his Ministry was currently embarking on working closely with Esscom and the authorities in the Philippines in efforts to free the two abducted victims. However, he declined to disclose details on the location and name of the resort that the 15 detained illegal immigrants worked. "As such, I advise resort operators and employers not to employ foreigners or individuals, who do not possess any valid personal identification documents as all sorts of problems will arise later. "The Ministry suspected these 15 illegal immigrants are informants to the group of abductors but all of them are being questioned to see if they are involved in the incident," he said. Also present was Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin. In the 10.30pm incident last Wednesday, a group of seven armed men intruded into the Singamata Adventures Reef and Resort and abducted two foreign women, Gao Hua Yuan, 29, from Shanghai and resort worker Filipina Marcy Dayawan, 40.Zahid said the Esscom administration, together with the armed forces and police, played a vital role in ensuring the east coast of Sabah was free from any criminal activities but it would be difficult for the authorities to take action if the resort operators and employers protected those workers without any valid documents. He said the Ministry would take firm action against those employers found to have hired illegal immigrants under the Immigration Act 1959/63.Employers could also be prosecuted under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Amended 2010), he said.

Fisherman mourns family lost in Port Klang boat capsize

SHAH ALAM: A relative of three family members who died in Friday's boat capsize off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, is struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. Gan Leong Seong said he rushed to the scene after learning that his relatives had not returned from the short boat outing. Gan, a fisherman, had just finished setting up nets about 1km from the site when he received a call from a relative. "After finishing work, I was on my way home when the eldest brother of the deceased called to say the group hadn't returned after taking the boat out," he said outside the Shah Alam Hospital Forensics Unit today. "I immediately turned back and, upon arrival, found that the boat had already capsized." Gan said he dived twice in dark and dangerous conditions before finding the body of his grandnephew in the front cabin area of the overturned boat. "I started searching underneath the boat after it was towed to the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency jetty. "The first attempt failed, but when my brother jumped in and found one of the victims' legs, I immediately dived back in without thinking twice. "The smell of fuel was strong and it was hard to breathe. But when I saw Darren, I gathered the courage to quickly retrieve him," he said, referring to one of the victims, Darren Gan, 3. Gan said he last saw the family during Chinese New Year celebrations earlier this year. He added that he and his brother, Gan Hon Tat — one of the victims whose body was found this morning — ran a fishing tackle shop and had only started the business a year ago. "The couple got married four years ago and had one son. It's heartbreaking to lose them all at once." The 4.30pm incident on Friday claimed five lives after their boat capsized 0.3 nautical miles off Tanjung Harapan. A 17-year-old survived. Darren, Cheu Soon Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29, were found inside the capsized boat. Darren's parents, Hon Tat and Careen Man, were initially reported missing before their bodies were recovered separately at 7.42am today, about 0.1 nautical miles from the National Hydrographic Centre, Port Klang.

MMEA intercepts petrol cargo boat without insurance coverage

BESUT: A local cargo boat carrying petrol was detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for operating without valid insurance coverage. Terengganu MMEA director Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang said the boat was intercepted at 1.28pm last Thursday, 26.6 nautical miles west of Kuala Besut estuary. He said the vessel, manned by a skipper and two local crew members aged between 20 and 40, was believed to be en route to deliver petrol supplies to Pulau Redang, Kuala Nerus. "While patrolling the area under Op Iman, the maritime vessel Perkasa 48 came across the cargo boat carrying barrels of fuel and proceeded to conduct an inspection. "Checks revealed that the boat was suspected of committing an offence under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for operating without a valid insurance contract," he said in a statement today. Hamiludin emphasised that maritime insurance is not only a legal requirement but also crucial in ensuring the safety of crew, assets, and national waters from unforeseen risks. The boat, along with its skipper and crew, was taken to the Kuala Besut Maritime Post jetty for further investigation. "MMEA urges all shipping operators and boat owners to ensure their documents and maritime insurance coverage are always up to date and in full compliance with regulations," he said. He stressed that MMEA will not compromise on legal compliance, particularly in the state's waters, and stern action will be taken to uphold the nation's maritime security.

According to preliminary investigations, the boat is believed to have lost control before capsizing about 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan. "A team from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency in Selangor resumed the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation at 7am today, after it was suspended at 8pm last night. "The operation was activated by the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor Baru at 5.16pm after receiving a report of the incident. "The missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama," he said in a statement today. Abdul Muhaimin said the couple was reported to be on the boat with their son, Darren Gan, aged 3. "Another male victim found dead at the scene was their friend, Fong Yong Sen, 29. The sole survivor has been identified as Chang Yan Qin, 17.
