Pros and cons of Toronto Raptors taking Florida basketball G Alijah Martin in 2025 NBA Draft
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Martin averaged a career-high 14.4 points per game for the Florida Gators in 2024-25, helping lead UF to a 36-4 record and its third national title in school history.

"It's a bunch of emotions, excited, nervous," Martin told ESPN shortly after he was picked. "Just ready to get to the next level."
A transfer from Florida Atlantic, Martin brought a rugged competitiveness to both ends of the floor. He ranked second on the Gators with 56 steals. Martin's perimeter defense helped UF improve its defensive efficiency from 94th in the country (per KenPom) in 2023-24 to sixth in the country (per KenPom) in 2025.
In April, Martin became the first player in college basketball history to start for two Final Four teams, first with the Owls in 2023 and then the Gators in 2025.
Overall, Martin totaled 2,022 points, 786 rebounds, 321 3-point field goals, 253 assists and 211 steals over his five collegiate seasons at FAU and Florida.

Martin joins Walter Clayton Jr. (18th overall, traded to Utah Jazz) as the second UF player taken in the NBA Draft.
Here's a look at the pros and cons of the Raptors drafting Martin:
Positives
Martin proved his mettle in the clutch, sinking a pair of go-ahead free throws with 46.5 seconds left in UF's eventual 65-63 national title win over Houston. A high-level athlete, Martin plays bigger than his 6-foot-2 fame, as his 29 dunks ranked second on the team. Part of that high-level athleticism comes from Martin's football background, as he passed for more than 2,100 yards and 20 TDs and rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 13 TDs as a dual-threat quarterback at North Pike (Miss.) High School.

Offensively, Martin showed his ability to score from the 3-point line (81-230, 35.2%) and free-throw line (91-121, 75.2%) in his lone season at UF and wasn't afraid to mix it up on the boards (4.5 rebounds per game, 49 offensive rebounds). He scored in double figures in 31 of 38 games, including a season-high 32-point outing against Southern Illinois on Nov. 22, 2024. Martin was often credited by Florida basketball coach Todd Golden for the improving the physical and mental toughness for the Gators during their national championship season.
Concerns
Martin's size (6-2) still isn't ideal for a shooting guard/wing player at the NBA level, and he's not a reliable enough ballhandler (85-55 assist-to-turnover ratio) to play the point. He's a streaky 3-point shooter who at times can display questionable shot selection. As a junior in 2023-24, Martin shot just 33.8% from 3-point range before transferring to UF.
Final thoughts
Martin has proven to be a winning player wherever he's suited up, helping lift FAU from obscurity to the Final Four in 2023 before emerging as one of the key additions to lead UF to a national title in 2025. He will likely bring those same winning intangibles to an NBA roster.

Luka Dončić has knee collision scare during Eurobasket exhibition, but avoids serious injury
Luka Dončić put a scare into the Los Angeles Lakers and their fans, in addition to NBA followers, when he left Saturday's FIBA Eurobasket exhibition between Slovenia and Latvia with what appeared to be a knee injury. However, Dončić was apparently all right and wanted to return to the game, so the Lakers don't have to worry about their recent $165 million investment suffering a concerning injury as they plan a future beyond LeBron James. The play in question occurred in the third quarter when teammate Gregor Hrovat fell into Dončić's knee while backpedaling on defense. Dončić was planted in the lane, battling for position. Following the collision, Dončić sat down on a chair to compose himself though didn't appear to be in visible pain. Perhaps he was thinking about how fortunate it was that he didn't suffer a serious knee injury. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] However, Dončić did leave the game and go back to the locker room which immediately triggered the worst fears. He walked off the court without assistance but was favoring his right leg as he left. Dončić eventually returned from the locker room and appeared to be fine, though he had an ice bag on his knee as he sat on the bench still in full uniform. He wanted to return to the game, but the Slovenia medical staff recommended against it, according to the broadcast. The Athletic's Dan Wolke reported on social media that a source told him serious injury was avoided. Prior to leaving the game, Dončić scored 26 points in 17 minutes with 4 rebounds and 5 assists. In addition to his max contract extension, Dončić has made headlines this summer by improving his conditioning and diet, losing "significant weight" during offseason workouts. His leaning down earned him a cover story for "Men's Health," and he claims to have lost 31 pounds. Dončić and the Slovenian national team will begin official Eurobasket play when the tournament begins on Aug. 27. Slovenia will tip off against Poland on Aug. 28. Other NBA stars playing in the international tournament include Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Nikola Jokić (Serbia), Alperin Sengun (Turkey), Lauri Markkanen (Finland) and Kristaps Porziņģis (Latvia).

Amazon Prime Makes Knicks Announcement Before 2025-26 NBA Season
Amazon Prime Makes Knicks Announcement Before 2025-26 NBA Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NBA offseason has quieted down since the end of the Las Vegas Summer League as teams now prepare for the start of training camp before the start of the 2025-26 season. Of course, the 2025-26 season begins on October 21 on NBC when the Oklahoma City Thunder host the Houston Rockets. While this is a massive matchup to tip off the new season with the NBA's return to NBC, it is not the only new network that will broadcasting games next season as Amazon Prime will also show select games next season on their streaming service. Knicks among teams featured in Amazon Prime's NBA streaming debut On Wednesday, Amazon Prime made a massive announcement as they revealed that their first games will come on October 24. The two games featured to begin Amazon Prime's NBA era will feature the New York Knicks taking on the Boston Celtics along with the Minnesota Timberwolves facing off against the Los Angeles Lakers. This is massive news, especially for the Knicks, as they will host the first game ever streamed on Amazon Prime next season in an Eastern Conference showdown with the Celtics. For the Knicks, they are set to enter next season as one of the favorites to win the East due to their core of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart. New York also upgraded their bench this summer by signing Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele in the free agency and they will also enter next season with a new head coach in Mike Brown after firing Tom Thibodeau to begin their offseason. While there has been a ton of change in New York, their core has stayed the same and they are looking to build off their impressive season last year that saw them reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000. Of course, they will have a tough test against Jaylen Brown and the Celtics to tip off Amazon Prime's NBA coverage as the Knicks try to start their season off strong as they chase a championship. Training Camp Stock Prices Skyrocketing for Select MN Vikings
For Minnesota Vikings fans, week one of the NFL preseason was probably the most important, given most of the offensive starters actually played at least one drive. More than likely, we will not see JJ McCarthy, Jordan Addison or much of the starting o-line for the final two exhibition games. But for those inside of TCO Performance Center, this week is much more important. Not only do they have another preseason game on Saturday against the New England Patriots, once dominant AFC contender is coming to town a few days early for a couple midweek joint practice sessions too. It's at this week's joint practices where many MN Vikings starters, on both sides of the football, will get most of their training camp and preseason work in. These joint practices are competitive and, by design, incredibly intense. Related Headlines MN Vikings Make Shocking Early Cut at LB; Confirm Rondale Moore Injury MN Twins Commit to New Catcher in Latest Roster Move MN Vikings QB Battle Heating Up – Max Brosmer Uncuttable, Sam Howell in Trouble…? Minnesota Vikings player stocks on the rise entering week 2 of preseason Without a doubt, this week's visit from the Pats will help Minnesota's coaching staff decipher who on the Vikings' 90-man roster is a contender for final spots on the regular season 53-man roster, compared to who is a pretender. These sessions will also go a long way toward deciding position battles that are being had throughout the depth chart. So, with one 20-10 exhibition victory now in their back pocket and a big week up ahead, let's take a look at which Vikings players have bumped their training camp stock, thus far. MN Vikings Stock 📈: QBs Max Brosmer, Sam Howell This is the only spot where I have two players listed next to each other. That's because it felt wrong to leave either Max Brosmer or Sam Howell off this list, but I also didn't want to use up two spaces on depth quarterbacks. I wrote more on the current standing of the Minnesota Vikings' QB room, after all three of them played in the first preseason game of the summer on Saturday. But combined, Howell and Brosmer completed 16-of-21 passes for 152 yards and 1 touchdown, immediately answering the 53-man roster questions surrounding both quarterbacks. For the first week or two of training camp, Sam Howell struggled badly enough to where multiple local beat writers and plugged-in media members were wondering if it was time for the Vikings to start exploring outside backup quarterback options. If general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was in that same headspace, and actively making calls last week on QB options not currently in purple, I'd imagine he hung up the phone by halftime of Minnesota's preseason win over Houston. Related: Howell may not be the best executor of Kevin O'Connell's offense during the week, especially right now, coming in new. But the one-time UNC standout proved over the weekend that, if needed in a pinch, the soon to be 25-year-old QB with 18 games of starting NFL experience would be a perfectly viable option. Meanwhile, Max Brosmer has impressed coaches, teammates and media members throughout the early-part of 2025 training camp. Still, most believed the former Gopher was destined for the Vikings' 2025 practice squad. Following his performance in week one of the preseason, however, that is no longer a guarantee. With two games remaining, both of which Brosmer is expected to get A LOT of playing time, the 24-year-old has an opportunity to make himself uncuttable by the time Minnesota's exhibition schedule is completed. Stock 📈: EDGE Gabe Murphy Gabe Murphy isn't new to any list that includes Minnesota Vikings training camp standouts. In 2024, after signing as an undrafted free agent, Murphy was one of the earliest rookies to stand out last summer. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury at the end of camp that landed him on injured reserve for a large chunk of the regular season. But exactly one year later, Murphy has picked up right where he left off prior to his injury this time last preseason. Even prior to Saturday's exhibition contest, Murphy was a player being regularly mentioned as an undrafted free agent making an impact at Minnesota Vikings practices. Against the Texans, he doubled down on that optimism with 3 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 5 QB hits, disrupting Houston's plans all afternoon in both their run and pass game. Murphy finished Saturday's preseason game with a 80.2 PFF grade on defense, a number that was buoyed by his 85.3 pass rush grade. Neither he nor Bo Richter will wow viewers in pass coverage — Murphy scored a 61.4 coverage grade vs Texans — but Gabe excelled everywhere else (69.6 Run DEF, 72.0 tackle). There isn't a lot of room on the Vikings' 53-man roster at outside linebacker, behind Andrew Van Ginkel, Jonathan Greenard and Dallas Turner, but Gabe Murphy has to be the current leader for the remaining 1-3 spots that are available. MN Vikings Stock 📈: K Will Reichard On Saturday, Will Reichard kicked four total field goals (2 XP, 2 FG) and hit all four in convincing fashion, including a 48-yarder that capped off a 13-play drive from the Minnesota Vikings starters early in the first quarter. This time last year, that would not have surprised anyone. Reichard came in as a 6th round pick out of Alabama and Vikings coaches were so impressed by his summer workouts that they cut his veteran competition, John Parker Romo, prior to their first preseason game. Will Reichard went on to hit 14 of his first 14 regular season NFL field goal attempts, to start out his MN Vikings career (along with a perfect XP mark – 23/23). Unfortunately, the rookie kicking phenom suffered an injury in week 9, which resulted in the first two misses of his career. Related: Reichard was placed on the injured list from week 10 to week 13, and when he returned, he was no longer Mr. Automatic, converting on just 4-of-6 field goal attempts. Both misses came from 40-49 yards, where Will had been automatic since becoming the starter in Alabama. After getting healthy over the offseason, most fans and media pundits expected the 24-year-old kicker to regain last year's camp form early this summer. Reality didn't play out that way, however. Instead, Reichard struggled with accuracy during the first few weeks of training camp. Thankfully, over the past week or two, it sounds like Will has turned things around. He was perfect during the Vikings' night practice last weekend, and hit on all four of his attempts against the Texans. Let's hope whatever had been going on since last season's injury is now behind the Minnesota Vikings' present and future at kicker. Stock 📈: RB Zavier Scott Lastly, we cannot make a 2025 Minnesota Vikings camp stock risers list without including rookie undrafted free agent running back, Zavier Scott, who has been one of the top standouts early on in training camp. Well, on Saturday against the Texans, he did absolutely nothing to slow down his preseason hype train. After his top competition for RB3, Ty Chandler, took 5 handoffs for a total of just 5 yards (1 YPC) — plus 3 receptions for 20 yards — Scott was given his first NFL preseason opportunity. And he was not going to let it go to waste, rushing 7 times for 40 yards (5.7 YPC), including a 12-yard toss play in the third quarter that showed off his speed and tackle-breaking abilities. Scott, a former wide receiver, also caught one screen pass for 11 yards and a first down. Related: I don't know if the Minnesota Vikings are ready to hand Xavier Scott the RB3 position just yet. But at this point, there is nothing that Ty Chandler does better than Scott out of the backfield (other than being one of the fastest players on the team). The converted Maine/UConn receiver can run the ball inside and outside, can obviously catch passes at a high level, and unlike Chandler, he can block a little bit too.
