Will Oilers captain McDavid sign by training camp? Likely, but he will set the terms

Article content It may be the dog days of summer around here, but for all the fun social media photos of Leon Draisaitl's big wedding to Celeste Desjardins in the south of France, with seemingly everybody who's ever worn an Oiler jersey in 29's 10 years here invited and attending, but for Kasperi Kapanen, who got married in Helsinki at the same time to his longtime partner Matleena. Article content Article content Here's some hockey items questions: Article content Here's what we think we know: Article content Yes he will, with one year left on his $12.5 million AAV Oilers contract but it will be a three- or four-year extension. He's not getting locked in for eight years like his best buddy Leon, whose new deal with the NHL's highest AAV of $14 million starts this fall, even if Draisaitl and Celeste are on their honeymoon in Europe with Connor and wife Lauren. McDavid may take a haircut and not sign for $20.8 million AAV, which would be the 20 per cent high allowed a player on the overall $104 million cap in 2026-2027, but fans who see him signing for, say, $16 million a year to allow for the signing of other people? They're dreaming. Article content Here's what we do know: Article content McDavid will write in the dollar amount and the years and the team will say thank-you. No real need for negotiation. Any thought that he would leave Draisaitl high and dry and not resign is silly. Connor's wife Lauren also has business interests here to keep 97 tied to our city for several more years. Article content Article content Leon was making $8.5 million AAV and got his $5.5 million AAV bump. Should McDavid actually take a cent less than $18 million (a similar raise)? Don't see it. The Athletic's ace analytics guy Dom Luszczyszyn projects McDavid at $19.5 million AAV. Article content And, five more years of the tag-team together should be fine. That would still run 97 to his 33rd birthday. Wayne Gretzky left the Oilers for L.A. when he was only 27. If the Oilers haven't won a Cup by 2030, McDavid may well look at New York and go to the Rangers for a new adventure like Mark Messier did (of course Messier had won five Cups by then). Before McDavid gets to the last year of an Oilers extension, if unhappy, he will let the Oilers know and they can trade him for a bundle. Article content At a bargain $3.4 million AAV now, we see him in the $7-million range with the Oilers working on an extension right now because the seven million is what the Jets just gave their own second-pairing free-agent defenceman Neal Pionk, 30. They're both second-pairing defencemen. Brandon Montour also got $7 million from Seattle as a free agent when 30 years old. A five-year extension seems about right for Walman.

Tennis star Elina Svitolina faces online abuse after Montreal loss, blames 'shameful' bettors

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has spoken out about the deluge of hateful abuse she received online from frustrated gamblers after losing a match in Canada, including messages wishing her death and celebrating Russia killing her compatriots. Article content Following her straight-sets loss to Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open on Tuesday night, Svitolina posted screenshots of the messages on Instagram. Article content Article content The abuse was directed at her, while other racial slurs also targeted her husband, the French tennis player Gael Monfils, who is Black. Article content One abuser hoped that Russia 'kills all you (expletive) Ukrainians' in the war raging in Svitolina's country. Article content 'To all the bettors: I'm a mum before I'm an athlete,' Svitolina wrote in her Instagram story. 'The way you talk to women _ to mothers — is SHAMEFUL. If your mothers saw your messages, they'd be disgusted.' Article content Earlier this year, British player Katie Boulter said she received death threats during the French Open targeting her and her family, while the WTA and ITF called on betting companies to do more to stem the flood of online abuse players face on social media. Article content Boulter told the BBC in an interview that online abuse has become the norm and that she thinks many of the messages are sent by people who are placing bets on tennis matches. Article content Her comments coincided with the WTA and ITF publishing a first season-wide report into online abuse, showing that 458 tennis players were targeted by more than 8,000 abusive comments and posts on social media in 2024. The report said 40% of the abuse came from 'angry gamblers.' Article content

Article content Article content Those in attendance and million others — including this columnist — who caught the action on the boob tube will have the thrills and spills of that fifth day forever etched in their minds. But for a neutral fan this was cricket at its very best. Article content This wasn't a Twenty20 bang-a-ball match, but a Test encounter and you would never know it — and we may never see anything like this again. Article content India came back to grab this epic victory and force a 2-2 tie in one of the hardest, closest-fought series. It will be a summer that won't soon be forgotten soon as fans of the sport were treated to a rivalry that was so intense that it went down to the wire after nearly seven weeks of non-stop action. Article content England, led by the mercurial Ben Stokes, and India, captained by 25-year-old newcomer Shubman Gill, went at it hammer and tongs and, in the end, it was probably fitting that these two finely tuned squads settled for a draw. Article content What unfolded at The Oval on the fifth day was pure, sheer drama that will earn itself a place in sport's most prized moments. Article content England arrived on the final day of a classic summer Test needing 35 runs with four wickets in hand in its chase of 374, but were blown away on a morning of unbearable tension and true sporting drama. Article content Article content Article content Siraj, who has had to toil in the shadows of superstar Jasprit Bumrah and Shami, finally made his mark and he will be feted by millions when he returns home. Siraj stamped his name in history with his third wicket of the morning, a gut-busting fifth of the innings and 23rd of the series. Article content Apart from Siraj's heroics, few will forget the brave Chris Woakes, who had his arm in a sling following dislocating his shoulder earlier in the game. He walked out in a desperate attempt to win before Siraj ended this series by uprooting Atkinson's stump with a yorker. Article content 'It has been one of the all-time best Test matches,' England coach Brendon McCullum remarked. Article content 'We turned up today with high hopes, but Mohammad Siraj and the passion of the Indian boys was too strong and ultimately they deserve to win this Test match,' he added. Article content Scores: India 224 (Karun Nair 57, Gus Atkinson five for 33) and 396 (Yashvasi Jaiswal 118, Josh Tongue five for 125) beat England 247 (Zak Crawley 64, Harry Brook 53) and 367 (Brook 111, Joe Root 105, Ben Duckett 54, Prasidh Krishna four for 62, Siraj four for 84).
