Saudi Arabia studies ways to combat forest fires and promote sustainability
RIYADH — The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) has completed a study titled "Methods of Preventing Forest Fires and Addressing Their Impacts in the Southern and Southwestern Regions of Saudi Arabia," in collaboration with King Khalid University and Monash University in Australia. This study is part of its efforts to enhance forest protection and reduce the risk of fires, in order to achieve environmental sustainability goals.
The study included a comprehensive assessment of forest conditions, the creation of a digital database, and the development of an integrated action plan that includes relevant agencies, defining the tasks of each agency. It utilized modern technologies such as early warning and drones. It also presented field designs and sustainable alternatives for creating strategic corridors, developed a guide for post-fire forest rehabilitation, established an organizational structure for a joint operations room, and activated the role of the community and volunteer teams in prevention and control.
It also placed particular importance on community engagement, by developing a comprehensive mechanism that enables community volunteer teams in forest areas to effectively contribute to prevention and control efforts through training, qualification, and integration with the work of official agencies.
This study represents a distinguished model of institutional, technical, and societal integration in the field of forest development and protection. It affirms Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving its natural resources and confronting the challenges of climate change, reflecting a strategic vision that seeks to achieve a balance between development and the protection of ecosystems.
The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification is working to enhance the presence of sustainable vegetation cover in forests. It has adopted an initiative to plant 60 million trees, equivalent to rehabilitating 300,000 hectares by 2030. In addition, it works on the executive regulations for vegetation cover development and combating desertification, through Article 6 on forest regulations. This aims to prepare and implement a national plan for sustainable forest management, work to protect, preserve, and develop forests, and regulate grazing in forest lands.

The forum aims to advance academic research by bringing together scholars from various disciplines — including history, architecture, Islamic arts, literature, geography, media, and digital studies — to explore new perspectives and methodologies for preserving and narrating the legacy of Hajj and the Two Holy Mosques. A key goal is to highlight how emerging technologies can enrich documentation efforts and provide immersive digital experiences that enhance public awareness and global academic collaboration. The event will focus on five main themes: Saudi Arabia's role in serving the Two Holy Mosques; Hajj and the holy sites in historical texts and travel accounts; architecture and visual identity of the Two Holy Mosques; Hajj in cultural memory and social heritage; and modern technologies in Hajj documentation. The Foundation has begun accepting research papers, with the submission window open until the end of Rabi al-Awwal 1447H. The submitted work will undergo a one-month peer review, followed by a one-month revision period, with accepted papers to be announced two weeks after final amendments.

Muslim World League launches global digital Quranic reading initiatives in Makkah

Haram imam warns against fake social media accounts, misuse of technology
Saudi Gazette report MAKKAH — Sheikh Yasser Al-Dosari, imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, urged Muslims in his Friday sermon to verify news before sharing it and avoid spreading content from paid or fake social media accounts that fabricate statements and false fatwas. Al-Dosari warned that many of these accounts deliberately spread misinformation to distort reputations and sow division in society. He stressed that every person is accountable before God for what they publish and share online. Highlighting the Kingdom's pioneering role in harnessing technology to serve communities, he praised Saudi Arabia's vision and steady steps in the digital field. However, he cautioned against misuse, saying that smartphones have turned, for some, from tools of connection into means of isolation. 'People appear among others as bodies without hearts, senses without souls, scrolling endlessly through platforms, drowning in clips without purpose, reaping little benefit,' he said. The imam noted that social media has often become 'a theater of false lives and unfair comparisons,' breeding envy, grudges, and ingratitude. He called out fake accounts that spread lies and attributed fabricated religious rulings to scholars as part of organized campaigns of distortion. Al-Dosari emphasized the need to recognize these dangers early and restore balance. He advised taking short breaks from devices to combat 'digital addiction' and to realign life priorities.
