Neglected Hubballi's TenderSURE road demands attention

Time of India04-06-2025
Hubballi: The TenderSURE project, implemented to provide better infrastructure and enhance the city's appearance, requires immediate attention to restore its intended purpose.
The 2.19-km TenderSURE road in North Karnataka's Hubballi requires immediate maintenance and oversight.
Since its public opening in 2019, despite initial efforts by police and municipal authorities to maintain this Rs 35 crore infrastructure project, the road from Arts College Circle to Tolankere via Shirur Park deteriorated significantly and requires urgent attention. The situation worsened due to inadequate oversight from civic bodies and law enforcement.
Vehicle parking along the roadside and commercial establishments encroaching upon pedestrian walkways have created congestion on this stretch, which extends from Arts College Circle to Tolankere via Shirur Park.
Currently, pedestrians are finding it difficult to use the footpaths as shopkeepers have extended their businesses onto them. Despite having parking spaces in commercial complexes and others, motorists park their vehicles haphazardly on both sides of the road, causing traffic congestion.

Local residents have expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of this flagship project. The road, which was meant to showcase modern urban infrastructure, now exhibits signs of wear and tear. The tiles on footpaths are broken in many places, and the road markings have faded considerably.
Initially, during the road's inauguration, both police and civic officials collaborated to establish designated parking zones.
However, the implementation of this plan was mysteriously halted. Currently, vehicles are routinely parked along the road's edges, alleged people.
Umesh Dushi, a social activist, said traffic police initiated periodic drives to clear illegal parking and encroachments, but the problem resurfaces within days. The authorities need to implement a permanent solution, including regular maintenance schedules and strict enforcement of parking rules.
Commissioner of HDMC, Rudresh Ghali, said a dedicated meeting with the police department would be arranged regarding the TenderSURE road. He said they would work towards clearing all obstacles from the road and strictly remove footpath encroachments. He said enforcement actions would commence shortly.

Festive season opens with high car discounts of up to Rs 1.2 lakh

Festive discounts on passenger vehicles in August, coinciding with Rakshabandhan and Ganesh Chaturthi, remain at similar levels to last year, ranging from Rs 40,000 to over Rs 1 lakh as automakers work to liquidate inventory. Nearly one-fourth of annual car sales occur during India's festival months, with OEMs typically ramping up production to meet demand. Discounts at the start of the festive period suggest relatively muted buyer sentiment. Passenger vehicle retail sales in July dipped marginally year-on-year, though month-on-month volumes saw double-digit growth, indicating some recovery. In 2024, carmakers rolled out steep incentives to clear older stock, with average cash discounts and exchange bonuses between Rs 60,000 and Rs 1 lakh on slow-moving models. This year, while overall levels remain high, the scope has widened. Popular mass-market hatchbacks and sedans are seeing offers of Rs 40,000–Rs 80,000, while select SUVs and MPVs carry benefits exceeding Rs 1 lakh, especially for older stock. Dealers say higher discounts on premium mass-market models are aimed at countering rising EMI costs and clearing inventory before upcoming festive launches. Tata Motors Group CFO P. Balaji acknowledged that 'ICE discounts in the market remain elevated' but said the company is addressing the issue by reducing dealer-end inventory ahead of and during the festive season to avoid deep discounting. 'Post-festive season, we aim to bring stock levels down sharply to protect dealer profitability and avoid panic-driven price cuts,' he said, adding that the focus is on retail sales rather than wholesale market share. Dealers expect discounting to persist in the run-up to the festivals as companies compete for buyer attention amid a surge in new launches and the impact of high interest rates on affordability. However, if retail demand improves during September–November, OEMs may scale back incentives towards year-end. Compared with 2024, the 2025 discount landscape shows a sharper segmentation strategy. Last year's broad-based offers spanned entire portfolios, while this year's are more targeted, focusing on slower-moving trims, previous model-year inventory, and regions with weaker retail momentum. Analysts note that while total discount spending remains high, carmakers are being more selective to balance sales pushes with profitability. In the compact SUV segment this month, the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara carry combined benefits of Rs 45,000–Rs 80,000, depending on variant and location. Premium hatchbacks, including the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20, and Tata Altroz, are being retailed with discounts of Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000. Entry-level hatchbacks and sedans are also seeing aggressive price support. The Maruti Alto K10, Renault Kwid, and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios are offering benefits from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000, while compact sedans such as the Honda Amaze, Maruti Dzire, and Hyundai Aura have Rs 35,000 to Rs 70,000 in total offers. Mid-size sedans, including the Hyundai Verna and Honda City, are seeing discounts up to Rs 1 lakh on select variants. Larger SUVs and MPVs are part of the discount wave, with the Toyota Innova Crysta and Tata Safari getting Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh in benefits. Mahindra's Scorpio-N and XUV700 are being pushed with offers of Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000 in certain markets. High-demand models with long waiting periods remain largely unaffected. Among compact hatchbacks, the Maruti Celerio and Wagon R each have discounts of Rs 55,000–Rs 60,000, depending on variant and stock, while the Grand i10 Nios offers cash benefits and exchange bonuses totalling around Rs 50,000 in some markets. In the mid-size hatchback segment, the Toyota Glanza is available with benefits similar to the Baleno's Rs 30,000–Rs 40,000 range, while the i20 carries Rs 35,000–Rs 45,000 in benefits, including corporate offers. Small and mid-size SUVs are seeing deeper cuts. The Maruti Brezza offers Rs 40,000–Rs 55,000 in benefits, Hyundai's Venue Rs 45,000–Rs 55,000, Tata's Nexon up to Rs 50,000, and Mahindra's XUV300 Rs 60,000–Rs 70,000 in some cities. Larger SUVs such as the Hyundai Alcazar are available with Rs 70,000–Rs 80,000 in discounts, while the Tata Harrier has Rs 75,000–Rs 1 lakh in benefits, depending on model year and variant. In the sedan segment, where volumes have been softer, deals remain competitive. Skoda's Slavia and Volkswagen's Virtus carry offers of Rs 55,000–Rs 65,000, while the City is available with benefits up to Rs 75,000 and the Verna with Rs 60,000–Rs 65,000, aimed at boosting showroom traffic ahead of the festive rush.

"If a particular stretch sees frequent accidents, the midpoint of that stretch is categorised as a black spot," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Headquarters) Shive Keshari Singh told PTI. In 2024, a total of 111 black spots were identified, recording 1,132 accidents, including 483 fatalities and 649 non-fatal crashes, according to officials. Live Events "We are tying up with Google, and internal procedures are in progress," Singh mentioned. "If and when it goes live this year, the map will carry the 2024 black spots first. The idea is to give timely information so commuters stay alert, their drive becomes easier and safer and reduce the number of fatalities." Here is a list of top accident-prone areas of Delhi: Azadpur Sabzi Mandi on GT Karnal Road recorded the highest number of accidents in 2024. The region witnessed 20 accidents, which included 11 fatal cases. Akshardham Mandir on NH-24 saw 19 accidents, with eight of them fatal. Bhalswa Chowk on Outer Ring Road also recorded 19, out of which six were listed as fatal. ISBT Kashmere Gate recorded 17 accidents, with eight marked as fatal. SGT Nagar recorded 18 accidents, with seven categorised as fatal. Libaspur Bus Stand witnessed 18 crashes, including six fatal ones. Anand Vihar ISBT and Rajokari Flyover each recorded 16 accidents. Near Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Dwarka, 12 accidents were recorded, seven of them fatal. Wazirabad logged 15 accidents, nine of which were fatal. According to the data, the top 10 black spots for accidents in 2024 accounted for a total of 180 incidents. Several corridors had multiple high-risk locations, with Outer Ring Road reporting at least 17 black spots, Ring Road having 13, and GT Karnal Road featuring 10 such spots. Other roads, such as NH-8, Rohtak Road, and Najafgarh Road, also had several black spots. The Delhi Police has identified and marked 25 new black spots as of July 2025, which collectively experienced 176 accidents, including 88 that were classified as fatal. Busy corridors such as Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and GT Karnal Road remain prominent sites, while ISBT Kashmere Gate, SGT Nagar, and Hanuman Mandir in Bawana have been flagged as repeat locations. "There can be many reasons a black spot forms, from missing or faded signage, worn zebra crossings, to poor road condition," a senior official told PTI. "We deploy personnel at these stretches and work with road agencies to fix the engineering issues, and now we are adding a tech layer through Google Maps." The planning for this initiative is ongoing, including marking the black spot locations and coordinating with road-owning agencies to improve signage, road designs, and strategic deployment of personnel. The goal is to make Delhi's roads safer and more secure, the DCP added. Top 10 black spots from 2024 and 2025 show a few overlaps like ISBT Kashmere Gate, SGT Nagar, and Libaspur Bus Stand appearing among the highest-risk locations for two consecutive years. Hanuman Mandir, which recorded 19 accidents in 2024, is included in the list again this year, with 10 incidents already listed. On the other hand, Swaroop Nagar features on the 2025 list but was not part of the top accident-prone locations last year. Akshardham Mandir and Wazirabad, both of which had high numbers in 2024, are currently absent from the 2025 top 10.

US automobile major Tesla has officially announced that it will inaugurate its second showroom in Delhi on August 11, after Mumbai. In a post on social media X, the company wrote, 'Arriving in Delhi – stay tuned," along with a graphic that indicated Tesla's presence in the national capital would begin on August 11. On July 15, the electric vehicle (EV) giant opened its first India showroom at the Maker Maxity Mall in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. Tesla has officially entered the world's third-largest automobile market, India, with the launch of its electric Midsize SUV, the Tesla Model Y, priced from nearly Rs 60 lakhs. Currently, the Model Y will be the only model available in the country. It will be offered in two variants; Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at INR 60 lakhs, and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at Rs 68 lakhs. Customers can also opt for Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, which adds an additional cost of INR 6 lakhs over the base prices. The Model Y is available in six colour options, of which Stealth Grey is the only one offered at no additional charge. The other colours: Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Ultra Red, Quicksilver, and Glacier Blue, will come at an extra cost. Interior options include white and black themes, and the vehicle will feature a five-seat configuration. As of now, deliveries and registration are available only in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram, as listed on Tesla's official portal. Pricing may vary depending on the state and applicable local taxes. Deliveries of the Tesla Model Y are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025. On the other hand, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR RWD) variant boasts a more substantial range of 622 kilometers. This model achieves 0 to 100 km/h in a quicker 5.6 seconds. Its supercharging capability provides up to 267 kilometers of range within the same 15-minute timeframe. The first row of seats in both Model Y features power recline, heating, and ventilation. The second row further enhances comfort with power two-way folding and heating functions. The vehicle is equipped with eight exterior cameras, including a new front-facing camera, supporting its driver-assistance systems. Connectivity is managed by second-generation hardware. Finally, the trunk offers hands-free power opening upon approach, adding to user convenience. Tesla has launched its first charging facility at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Maharashtra's Mumbai, weeks after opening its first showroom in the city. The introduction of the Tesla Model Y in India marks a significant step for the company in the country's evolving electric vehicle landscape, offering a combination of range, performance, and advanced features. view comments First Published: News auto Tesla Set To Open Its Second Showroom In Delhi Tomorrow, Check Location And Other Details Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
