Johor reaps success as agri giant
JOHOR BARU: Johor contributed the highest value of agricultural output nationwide, with sales reaching RM27.2bil last year, says a state executive councillor.
Johor agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip (pic) said the figure was based on the 2024 Agriculture Census presented by the Statistics Department.
He said the data was shared during the National Agriculture Exco meeting, which was chaired by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu in Putrajaya recently.
'The meeting served as an important platform to align key policies and proposals to advance the agricultural and agri-food sector across the country,' he said in a statement yesterday.
The Buloh Kasap assemblyman said Johor's strong performance reaffirmed its position as a national agriculture powerhouse and a critical contributor to food production and food security in Malaysia.
Zahari also said the state government would remain committed to ensuring that the agriculture sector continues to grow.
He added that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has repeatedly stressed the need for continuous efforts to boost the sector as a key part of the state's development plan.
'As part of the Johor Budget 2026, we will focus on empowering the target groups involved, such as farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen and agri-entrepreneurs,' he said.
Zahari also said that during the meeting, he had raised the importance of food security within the broader framework of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) development.
Zahari said food security was a key focus area under the JS-SEZ initiative, adding that efforts would include promoting high-tech agricultural practices.
'Our goal is to scale up the production of quality and competitive agri-food products by embracing innovation and sustainable methods,' he said.
In recognition of Johor's role, Zahari said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has approved a special allocation of RM23.4mil for the state.
'The funds will be used to implement 20 programmes and agricultural projects throughout 2025, with the aim of accelerating development and improving farmers' livelihoods.
'The state government is grateful for the support and will ensure the effective and smooth implementation of all initiatives under this collaboration,' he said.
Zahari also said that he had called for improvements in disaster assistance management, especially for farmers, breeders and fishermen affected by floods and other natural disasters during the meeting.
He said that faster aid delivery would enable them to resume affected projects quickly and safeguard their income sources and output capacity.
'The state government will continue giving its full commitment to elevating the agriculture sector in line with the Maju Johor agenda,' he added.

SST tweaks bring big relief for rakyat
KUALA LUMPUR: The government's move to fine-tune the Sales and Service Tax (SST) will not significantly affect its revenue collection but will have a positive impact on the people, said an economist. Professor Emeritus Dr Barjoyai Bardai, provost at Malaysia University of Science and Technology, said the expanded SST was expected to boost tax collection to RM51.7 billion in 2025, up from the earlier forecast of RM46.7 billion. "I don't see this (tax collection) being affected too much by the exemptions for the beauty sector, apples, oranges and dates, as well as the increased SST registration threshold from RM500,000 to RM1 million for leasing, rental and financial services. "At most, I believe that it would be around RM1 billion to RM2 billion. However, the tweaks will be a big relief for those on the ground." Barjoyai said the exemption for the entire beauty sector would help control inflation as personal care was a key expenditure for many people. "In May, the inflation rate for personal care stood at 3.7 per cent, so this is the right move," he said, citing Statistics Department figures. Barjoyai said the increase of the SST registration threshold to RM1 million would see many micro, small and medium enterprises exempt from paying the eight per cent tax on leasing, rental and financial services. "This is especially important in rural and suburban areas, and for small shops in apartments and flats. Their sales will not reach RM1 million a year." Still, he said, retailers in malls and those with many branches would likely be affected, though he did not believe they would immediately raise prices. "The retail sector is price-sensitive, and competition is fierce. I think they will absorb the increase in costs in the short run and only pass on the costs in the longer run." On the SST exemption for apples, oranges and dates, Barjoyai said this was appropriate as local fruits were not always cheaper than imported fruits. "Mangoes, rambutans and durians, for example, can cost a lot more than apples and oranges. "Overall, the tweaks are a good move, and it indicates that the government is listening to the people." Economist Dr Geoffrey Williams said the SST adjustments would not significantly alter the government's overall tax collection. "The SST will still be effective in improving government income to provide more money for priorities such as health, education and social protection." He added that exempting imported fruits and beauty services would keep prices steady and prevent disruptions to consumer behaviour. Consumers, however, must remain alert and ensure businesses did not take advantage of the situation by unjustifiably raising prices, he added. "Overall, it is a signal that the government is making modest changes and taking stakeholder views into account. "This is a positive approach to tax policy and should make implementation easier," he said. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said he believed the tweaks reflected the government's intention to strike a balance between financial discipline and taking care of the people's interests. "To some degree, it is a pragmatic move. Perhaps, there should be more time for consultation with industry players so that any final adjustments can be made before the rollout of such measures," he added.

Malaysia marks Maal Hijrah 1447H with honours and reflection
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — The Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M celebration in eight states and the federal capital today was marked by various meaningful events including religious talks, Quran recitations and the presentation of awards to individuals who have made significant contributions to the religion and the nation. In the city centre, nearly 8,000 attendees, including contingents from ministries, government departments and agencies, as well as foreign dignitaries, gathered at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre this morning for the national-level celebration. His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, graced the event at 9.30am, accompanied by Tunku Temenggong of Johor, Tunku Idris Iskandar. Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Cabinet ministers. In his royal address, Sultan Ibrahim issued a stern reminder to the community leaders not to use Islam as a political tool for personal gain. At the event, His Majesty also presented the National Tokoh Maal Hijrah award to former Johor Mufti Datuk Nooh Gadot, while Saudi Arabia's Minister of Haj and Umrah, Tawfig Fawzan Muhammed Al-Rabiah, received the International Maal Hijrah Figure award for 1447H/2025M. The Abu Bakar As-Siddiq Award includes an umrah package worth RM10,000 and RM10,000 in cash, while the other 11 recipients each received an educational travel package worth RM3,000 and RM3,000 in cash. In KEDAH, the Sultan of Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah urged the people to emulate the spirit and noble values of the hijrah in tackling present-day issues such as moral decay, social ills and the deterioration of family institutions. In SABAH, Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman officiated the Maal Hijrah celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre, which drew 5,000 attendees. Veteran politician Datuk Datu Amir Kahar Datu Mustapha who was active from 1986 to 2008 and once served as Deputy Chief Minister as well as State Agriculture and Fisheries Minister was selected as the male Maal Hijrah Figure. He received RM20,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate. For the female Maal Hijrah Figure, the award went to Datuk Seri Norsuadah Basah, a former newsreader, announcer, and producer active from 1973 to 1978. She also received RM20,000, a trophy and a certificate. In JOHOR, state Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said the theme 'Membangun Ummah Maju Johor' reflects the state's holistic development vision. 'The Johor government believes that development is meaningless if the people lose their moral compass. 'Therefore, efforts to develop the ummah must go hand-in-hand with state development,' he said at the state-level celebration held at the Iskandar Islamic Centre today. In TERENGGANU, the celebration was led by Yang Dipertuan Muda of Terengganu, Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sultan Mizan at Wisma Darul Iman. Also present were Tengku Sri Mahkota Raja Tengku Datuk Seri Muhammad Mu'az and Tengku Puteri Daulath Raja Tengku Datuk Seri Fatimatuz Zahra'. In SARAWAK, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg called on Muslims to become idea-generators, strategic thinkers and agents of change. 'Let us renew our intentions and understand the true meaning of hijrah. May the new hijrah year mark the beginning of determination, transformation and love for our religion and nation. ''Ummah Maju Makmur' and 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' are not just themes and slogans but our duty and collective mission,' he said. His speech was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at the state-level Maal Hijrah celebration at Dewan Suarah Bintulu which was attended by 1,200 people. Seventeen awards were presented, including those for Organisational Leadership, Muslim and Non-Muslim Civil Servants, Outstanding SPM Student and Exemplary Family. Malaysia's pineapple industry reaches billion-ringgit milestone
JOHOR BARU: Malaysia's pineapple industry has become a billion-ringgit sector, with farmers earning up to RM9,000 a month, marking a significant milestone in the country's agri-food success story. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu announced that the nation recorded RM1.3bil in pineapple output value in 2024, reflecting a 34% increase from the previous year. He noted that the country's pineapple production volume rose 17% to 520,000 metric tonnes, cultivated across 13,000ha of productive farmland. "This shows that pineapples are not just a fruit we enjoy, but a true engine of rural economic development," he said in his speech at the inaugural Malaysian Pineapple Day celebration held at a shopping mall on Friday (June 27). Mohamad added that Malaysia now has more than 8,000 pineapple growers and over 300 companies involved in the sector, ranging from small to large-scale operations. He stated that the self-sufficiency level for pineapples has reached 103%, allowing Malaysia to meet its domestic demand and expand its export potential. Mohamad Sabu highlighted the case of a Johor farmer who doubled his income from RM180,000 to RM350,000 annually by integrating drone technology into his operations. In Pahang, the Hijrah Asnaf Pineapple Farming programme has helped 18 participants, mainly from underprivileged groups, earn monthly incomes of up to RM5,000 after just a few months of cultivation. "The Federal Government has allocated RM75 million for pineapple development in Sarawak under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12). Farmers in Ulu Moyan three are already producing 50 tonnes of pineapples monthly and have set up their own processing facilities," he added. Mohamad also commended Sarawak's innovation in using pineapple waste as livestock feed and the launch of the new Sarawak Gold (SG1) variety as an alternative to the MD2 premium hybrid. "This shows a strong commitment from the Sarawak government to turn pineapple into a strategic commodity while supporting green economy principles," he said. In Kedah, artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite imaging are being used to monitor crops, boosting yield by 30% while reducing operational costs by 40%. He said these advances in technologies are helping prepare Malaysia to meet growing demand from foreign markets like China and Singapore. "Under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan, the ministry aims to expand cultivated land to 30,000 hectares, increase production to 1 million metric tonnes, and double pineapple exports from 2,300 to 4,000 containers annually," he added. Mohamad also noted that Johor remains the top pineapple-producing state in the country, contributing 68% of total cultivated land, thanks to strong collaboration with the state government. He urged more states, private firms, and individuals to participate in the pineapple sector, highlighting that the crop is now both a national asset and a symbol of rural transformation.
