Inzaghi becomes Al Hilal head coach
LONDON: Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal have appointed Simone Inzaghi as their new head coach in the wake of his departure from Inter Milan days after defeat in the Champions League final.
The 49-year-old Italian has signed a two-year contract and will lead Al Hilal into their Club World Cup campaign in the United States next month.
A statement on Al Hilal's official website said: "The board of directors of Al Hilal Club Company, headed by Fahd bin Saad bin Nafel, has completed the contracting procedures with the Italian coach Simone Inzaghi, coming from the Italian club Inter Milan to lead the technical helm of Al Hilal first football team. "This is with a two-year contract until the end of the 2026/2027sports season.
"Inzaghi will soon begin supervising the first team's training at the club's headquarters in Riyadh in preparation for the 2025 Club World Cup in the United States of America, which will begin on Sunday, June15.
"Al Hilal will face Real Madrid in its first match in the tournament,which will be held on Wednesday, June 18, in Miami, USA."
Inzaghi left his job at the San Siro on Tuesday following Saturday's5-0 Champions League final defeat by Paris St Germain in Munich.
He had taken over Inter, who relinquished their Serie A title to Napoli on May 23, in July 2021 and won six trophies during his time at the helm. — PA Media/dpa

Alcaraz returns to French Open final after ailing Musetti retires
PARIS: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz reached back-to-back French Open finals after Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti retired with injury while trailing 4-6 7-6(3) 6-0 2-0 on Friday. A frustrated Alcaraz kicked his bench during the second set but finally found a way through Musetti's dogged defence to draw level after a tiebreak and then produced a dazzling display of power and precision to dish out a bagel in the third set. Musetti, who appeared to be hampered by a left thigh issue midway through the third set, threw in the towel after two games in the fourth. "The first two sets were tough. I had chances to be up in the match but couldn't make the most of them," Alcaraz added. "When I won the second set, I was relieved and I knew that I needed to be aggressive and be myself. I was calmer. I could see clearer and I could play great tennis at the start of the third. "I'm feeling great physically. It's been three intense weeks but I have one more step to take. I'm playing great tennis and I have great confidence. I've been doing great things in this tournament and now is the time to give 100% in the final." Alcaraz said he would tune into the second semi-final on Court Philippe Chatrier to study his potential opponents. Carlo backs Raphinha to spark Brazil vs Paraguay
GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR: Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti is hopeful Raphinha will help sharpen his team's attack when they face Paraguay at home, the Italian said after blaming poor pitch conditions for Thursday's goalless draw with Ecuador. Ancelotti's much-anticipated debut as Brazil manager ended in frustration, as his side laboured to a goalless draw against Sebastian Beccacece's Ecuador in Guayaquil, where they were second best for large stretches, despite their wealth of talent. Chelsea complete signing of Delap from Ipswich
LONDON: Chelsea have signed striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town on a deal until until 2031 after triggering his £30million ($40.6 million) release clause. An agreement was reached between the clubs last week for the Englandunder-21 international, who becomes the Blues' first summer signing and can join immediately due to Fifa's 10-day June transfer window. That will enable him to take part in the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States, though if he travels with the team it will means he will miss the European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia. The 22-year-old said on the club's official website: "I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach. "It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies." Chelsea reportedly fended off interest from Manchester United, with the lack of European football next season for the Old Trafford side understood to be a factor in the player's decision to pick west London. Enzo Maresca's side will play in the Champions League after finishing fourth in his first season in charge, the first time the club has qualified for Europe's top competition since 2022.
