Perak authorities probe Sungai Bidor pollution, pig and duck farms inspected
State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and Integration Committee Chairman A Sivanesan said that the agencies conducted an on-site check yesterday and collected water samples from strategic locations for laboratory analysis.
'Samples were collected from a pig farm and a duck farm at Batu 2 1/2, Jalan Bruseh, near Bidor. Inspections revealed that the pig farm is in compliance with the required regulations. However, effluent samples were taken from both the discharge end of the farm and the discharge pipe in the river area, and these samples have been sent for testing of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).
'A probe into the duck farm revealed that it does not use ponds for rearing ducks. Therefore, no pond wastewater is being discharged into the river,' he said in a press conference alongside state Science, Environment, and Green Technology Committee Chairman Teh Kok Lim at Perak Darul Ridzuan Building yesterday.
PAS Vice President Datuk Idris Ahmad on Wednesday urged the state government to investigate a pig farm in Kampung Poh, which he claims contributes to pollution in Sungai Bidor.
Sivanesan said the analysis results are expected next week, as specified under the Pig Farming Control Enactment 1992.
'Based on sampling records conducted in 2024 and this January, the BOD readings for the farm in question complied with the minimum permitted level. Wastewater discharge should not exceed 50 parts per million. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) has seized 114 tonnes of pig carcasses valued at RM3.05 million in unauthorised transfer cases from 2024 until July this year. He explained that MAQIS conducts document checks, including import permits and veterinary health certificates, alongside physical container inspections at entry points. DVS Seized 114 tonnes Of Pig Carcass worth Over RM3 Mln since 2024
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) seized 114 tonnes of pig carcass, estimated to be worth RM3.05 million, involving the transfer of carcasses without approval in 18 cases of seizure from 2024 until last July,. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the seizures involved sales or storage premises of frozen pork carcasses suspected to have been imported without approval in Kelantan, Selangor, Johor, Kedah, Penang, Melaka and Labuan. He said that during the same period, the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) detected several attempts of illegal pork smuggling involving 24 arrests with a total trading quantity of 640 tonnes. 'The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), through MAQIS and DVS, always takes strict measures to control imports and combat illegal smuggling of pork from abroad, especially from countries identified as having outbreaks of dangerous diseases,' he said during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Arthur was responding to a question from Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) regarding MAQIS' enforcement actions on the importation and illegal smuggling of pork from abroad, particularly from Thailand and other countries with outbreaks of Streptococcus Suis and African Swine Fever (ASF), as well as the number of arrests made in relation to illegal pork smuggling activities at all national entry points this year. He said import control carried out by MAQIS is through a document inspection mechanism, including the requirement for import permits and veterinary health certificates, as well as physical inspections of containers at the country's entry points. ASF spreads to five Penang farms, outbreak contained
TASEK GELUGOR: The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Kampung Selamat here remains under control, despite five pig farms in the area testing positive for the disease as of last Friday. Penang Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said the latest case was detected at a farm after laboratory confirmation by the department. "This brings the total number of positive cases in Kampung Selamat to five. "However, the situation is manageable and less severe than the 2023 outbreak in Seberang Prai Selatan (SPS)," she told the New Straits Times today. As of Aug 1, 2,060 pigs from four farms have been culled — 351 pigs died from to the infection, while 1,709 were culled to curb the spread. Dr Saira Banu said the affected areas were under close monitoring, regular blood sampling being carried out to determine the extent of the infection. "We cannot yet declare Kampung Selamat an ASF-free zone," she added. The department continues to work closely with farmers and local authorities to enforce strict biosecurity measures. ASF is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, but poses no risk to humans. The outbreak was first reported on July 7 by a member of the public, who observed pigs exhibiting clinical signs consistent with the disease. The department promptly conducted inspections and collected samples at farms. Kampung Selamat is home to 63 pig farms with an estimated 120,000 pigs. In 2023, Penang declared the ASF outbreak a "disaster" after cases were reported in seven commercial pig farms in two districts, involving 25,000 pigs.
