Govt Tests Emergency Alert System On Phones: What Is Cell Broadcast And Why It Matters

NDTV28-06-2025
The Department of Telecom on Saturday sent a pan-India emergency alert on mobile phones. The popup alert, received by smartphone users, contains a test message that informs the users about the government's initiative. The text of the message said, "Test Alert, It is a 'test cell broadcast' message and requires no action from the recipient." The message is dated 28/06/2025 #900.
'Android users can disable these alerts by navigating to 'Settings' > 'Security & emergency' > 'Wireless emergency alerts' and turning off 'Test alerts'. iOS users can disable these alerts by going to 'Settings' > 'Notifications' and scrolling down to turn off 'Test alerts'.
The test message that surprised many users is the government's way to test the emergency cell broadcast technology developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).
Why does the government send these messages?
The primary purpose of the Cell Broadcast Alert System is to provide real-time alerts during emergencies, helping to save lives by spreading vital information quickly. This advanced technology is designed to notify people about major threats such as earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, or other disasters.
Unlike regular text messages, cell broadcasts can be sent to all mobile phones within a specific geographical area, ensuring wide and immediate coverage without overwhelming telecom networks. Government authorities and emergency services use this system to issue warnings and share crucial updates with the public.
By delivering timely instructions, such as evacuation notices or safety precautions, the Cell Broadcast Alert System plays a critical role in disaster management and public safety, helping citizens act swiftly during high-risk situations.

Aadhaar to be used for Starlink KYC, says UIDAI

SpaceX's satellite internet service Starlink will use Aadhaar to validate Indian users under Know-Your-Customer (KYC) rules, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) announced on Wednesday. The Elon Musk-owned service has already obtained orbital slot appointments and a Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), but is yet to roll out. Parnil Urdhwareshe, Director at Starlink India, was with UIDAI CEO Bhuwnesh Kumar, where Starlink officially registered as a Sub-Authentication User Agency and Sub-eKYC user agency, allowing it to accept Aadhaar details from customers for the purpose of authenticating them. 'The use of Aadhaar authentication by a global satellite internet provider demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India's digital infrastructure,' UIDAI said in a statement. 'Aadhaar e-KYC will facilitate the onboarding of users seamlessly, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while delivering high-speed internet to households, businesses, and institutions.' Starlink has not started operations, even as its services have become available in recent weeks in Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The DoT is yet to administratively allot spectrum to the firm, and it is also likely working on compliance with security conditions imposed on GMPCS authorisation holders shortly before it received approval.

Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra Appears in Leaks, Highlights Reduced Notch Size

Samsung's next-generation high-end Android tablets are about to launch. WinFuture has published Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra leak, which show a significant change to its display. Samsung's 'Ultra' tablet has always been a monster of a device. A 14.6-inch display makes it supersized but also svelte and thin, all while packing a punch with its performance. A notable feature that has been carried over in every generation of Samsung's largest tablet is its display notch. While every other device in the lineup has shunned the notch, Samsung tablet notch has included one in its design for years. The notch has always featured two front-facing cameras. WinFuture has now acquired and published Galaxy Tab S11 images, and it is immediately clear to see the same general Tab S11 Ultra design language that Samsung uses for its supersized tablets. Per the report, the Ultra will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processor, and come with 16GB of RAM and an 11,600 mAh battery while shipping with Android 16 / One UI 8. All of this will be wrapped in a device that's just 'around' 5mm thick. The only noticeable difference in these leaked images, however, is the display notch. Samsung tablet 2025 has been slimmed down and isn't as pronounced as previous models. The notch is also rounded and more closely resembles a half-circle cut into the display rather than the distinct notch of its predecessors. The reason for the reduction is simple, as Samsung has removed one of the two front-facing cameras included in the tablet. Previous models came with both a standard lens and an ultrawide, but the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra will only house one of these two cameras. It could ultimately prove to be a net positive for users, even if it remains jarring to see a notch of any kind on such a large tablet.
