State conference to oppose smart meters and true-up charges on July 13
A State conference of workers and people's organisations will be held on July 13, at Dasari Nagabhushanam Rao Bhavan in Gandhinagar, under the aegis of the United Forum of People's Organisations. The conference will focus on the demands — 'No to Smart Meters' and 'Abolish True-Up Charges'. In a joint statement on Monday, AITUC State general secretary G. Obulesu and CITU State general secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao has called upon members from workers' unions, farmers' groups, agricultural labourers, women's organisations, youth, students, social, and middle-class associations to participate in large numbers and make the event a grand success. They alleged that the State government is implementing smart meters as part of the Central government's privatisation drive. They claimed that these meters will impose a burden of ₹13,000 per household, recoverable in instalments, while traditional meters earlier cost only ₹700. The installation is reportedly being carried out through Adani Energy, they said. They pointed out the inconsistency in the stance of the ruling TDP-led alliance, noting that while in opposition, TDP leaders, including Nara Lokesh, had opposed smart meters and even called for their destruction. However, after coming to power, the coalition is now allegedly continuing the same policies implemented by the previous YSRCP government. The leaders warned that smart meters would function like mobile recharge systems, where power would be cut off instantly once the prepaid amount is exhausted, leaving no room for billing disputes. They also stated that the government has imposed a burden of ₹15,435 crores on consumers under true-up charges since assuming office. The upcoming conference aims to build awareness among the public and formulate future action plans against these developments. The United Forum urged all concerned citizens and organisations to attend and voice their opposition to these anti-people policies, they added.

Radical Islamist group vows ‘Afghanistan-style' Sharia rule in Bangladesh
The radical Islamist group Jamaat-Char Monai has publicly declared its intent to reshape Bangladesh along the lines of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, with its leader saying that the imposition of Sharia law is part of the group's agenda, according to a report read more The radical Islamist group Jamaat-Char Monai has publicly declared its intention to reshape Bangladesh along the lines of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, with its leader saying that the imposition of Sharia law is part of the group's agenda. According to a Times of India report, in a July 1 interview with Khaled Muhiuddin, a US-based Bangladeshi journalist and editor-in-chief of Thikana News, Char Monai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim said, 'If govt is formed by winning the national election, the Islamic Movement Bangladesh will introduce Sharia law in the country.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The current governance system of Afghanistan will be followed,' he said. 'If we come to power, Hindus will also get rights in Sharia law that we will introduce. The rights of minorities will also be implemented,' Karim was quoted as saying. He also said that 'good things' of the US, the UK and Russia that do not conflict with Sharia will be accepted. Meanwhile, Bangladesh's Awami League party sharply slammed the interim government's silence on the matter, questioning whether it stems from 'negligence or deliberate complicity.' Raising alarm over rising violence and sectarian attacks, the party asked whether the assaults on temples, disruption of religious practices, targeting of women, and erosion of secular values reflect the true intentions of the so-called 'July Movement.' Since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August last year, Bangladesh has seen a spike in extremist activity. Under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, radical groups have increasingly resorted to violence and provocation, particularly against minority communities. Analysts suggest that these radical forces may have collaborated with student leaders and Yunus in the movement to topple the elected Awami League government. In a press conference on Tuesday, the Awami League presented alarming statistics on human rights violations, accusing the interim administration of plunging the country into a state of 'brutal anarchy.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The party described Bangladesh as a 'blood-stained nation' under the Yunus-led regime, citing a breakdown in safety, justice, and leadership. According to data shared by the party, 63 cases of rape were reported in June alone, including 17 gang rapes. Among the survivors were seven women and girls with disabilities. Additionally, 19 children and 23 teenage girls were raped. The month also saw 39 cases of sexual harassment and 51 physical assaults on women. With inputs from agencies

Assam CM launches ‘Mission BTR', claims Congress has ‘no foothold' in Bodoland
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma kicked off a five-day tour of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) on Monday, unveiling the BJP's ambitious "Mission BTR" to bolster development and party support ahead of the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. Addressing a massive rally at Green Field in Kokrajhar, the BTR headquarters, Sarma exuded confidence in the BJP's dominance in the region, declaring, "Congress has no presence here. Congress belongs in Pakistan." The remark drew loud cheers from the crowd, signalling the BJP's aggressive stance as the election season approaches. Sarma highlighted the BJP-led government's success in restoring stability in BTR following the 2020 BTR peace accord. "The last five years were about establishing peace - no encounters, no bomb blasts. The next five years will be about all-around development for every community," he asserted. Emphasising the party's electoral ambitions, he added, "We are not here to lose. We are here to win for peace, development, and the welfare of BTR's people." The rally, attended by state BJP chief Dilip Saikia, Minister Ashok Singhal, and several BTC leaders, underscored the party's focus on consolidating its base in BTR. Sarma outlined a two-pronged strategy: securing victory in the BTC polls and gearing up for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. "After BTC, we will shift full focus to 2026. Our goal is clear - to form the government again," he said. Later, Sarma chaired a review meeting at the Kokrajhar District Commissioner's office to assess the implementation of state welfare schemes, reinforcing the BJP's development-centric agenda. With "Mission BTR," the BJP aims to position itself as the region's primary force for stability and progress, leaving little room for opposition parties in its political calculus.
